The idea of distance learning is based on delivering the educational material to the learner through various means or methods of technical communication; the learner is separated from the teacher or the person conducting the process. In principle, distance education is based on not requiring the simultaneous presence of the learner with the teacher in the same location

Abstract The analysis of the current ramp-down phase of JET plasmas has revealed the occurrence of additional magnetic oscillations in pulses characterized by large magnetic islands. The frequencies of these oscillations range from 5 kHz to 20 kHz, being well below the toroidal gap in the Alfven continuum and of the same order of the low-frequency gap opened by plasma compressibility. The additional oscillations only appear when the magnetic island width exceeds a critical threshold, suggesting that the oscillations could tap their energy from the tearing mode (TM) by a non-linear coupling mechanism. A possible role of fast ions in the excitation process can be excluded, being the pulse phase considered characterized by very low additional heating. The calculation of the coupled Alfven-acoustic continuum in toroidal geometry suggests the possibility of beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAE) rather than beta-induced Alfven acoustic eigenmodes (BAAE). As a main novelty compared to previous works, the analysis of the electron temperature profiles from electron cyclotron emission has shown the simultaneous presence of magnetic islands on different rational surfaces in pulses with multiple magnetic oscillations in the low-frequency gap of the Alfven continuum. This observation supports the hypothesis of different BAE with toroidal mode number n = 1 associated with different magnetic islands. As another novelty, the observation of magnetic oscillations with n = 2 in the BAE range is reported for the first time in this work. Some pulses, characterized by slowly rotating tearing modes, exhibit additional oscillations with n = 0, likely associated with geodesic acoustic modes (GAM), and a cross-spectral bicoherence analysis has confirmed a non-linear interaction among TM, BAE and GAM, with the novelty of the observation of multiple triplets (twin BAEs plus GAM), due to the simultaneous presence of several magnetic islands in the plasma.

Chewing improves cognitive performance, which is impaired in subjects showing an asymmetry in electromyographic (EMG) masseter activity during clenching. In these subjects, the simultaneous presence of an asymmetry in pupil size (anisocoria) at rest indicates an imbalance in Ascending Reticular Activating System (ARAS) influencing arousal and pupil size. The aim of the present study was to verify whether a trigeminal EMG asymmetry may bias the stimulating effect of chewing on cognition. Cognitive performance and pupil size at rest were recorded before and after 1 min of unilateral chewing in 20 subjects with anisocoria, showing an EMG asymmetry during clenching. Unilateral chewing stimulated performance mainly when it occurred on the side of lower EMG activity (and smaller pupil size). Following chewing on the hypotonic side, changes in cognitive performance were negatively and positively correlated with those in anisocoria and pupil size, respectively. We propose that, following chewing on the hypotonic side, the arousing effects of trigeminal stimulation on performance are enhanced by a rebalancing of ARAS structures. At variance, following chewing on the hypertonic side, the arousing effect of trigeminal stimulation could be partially or completely prevented by the simultaneous increase in ARAS imbalance.

Personal networks can be both enabling and constraining in inclusion practices. This study focuses on the contribution of a particular neighborhood initiative for refugees in Amsterdam. Earlier studies have shown that in the specific context of the Netherlands’ welfare state, institutional or citizen initiatives can constrain the actual inclusion of refugees. These studies argue that good intentions do not necessarily lead to inclusion because hierarchal relations reproduce subtle exclusionary structures that limit refugees’ inclusion as equals. Yet, building social contacts with locals is essential for inclusion. This article shows the simultaneous presence of inclusion and exclusion by engaging with narratives from Syrian refugees participating in a six‐month housing project initiated in an Amsterdam neighborhood. Residents and volunteers shared responsibilities for organizing daily life in the project. The result was an unexpected combination of Granovetter’s weak and strong ties, what we call “hybrid ties,” that were embedded within neighborhood dynamics and networks. Despite occasional clashes in expectations, this community‐based housing project enabled specific forms of personal relationships (through hybrid ties) that were essential in refugee participants’ later inclusion in the Netherlands.

The purpose of the study is to highlight the key conditions of the design of a multimedia system, which are created an augmented reality. The research methodology is based on the use of general scientific methods. The analysis of scientific papers on the topic and the analysis of multimedia which are using like AR projects technologies are aimed at determining the features of augmented reality formation. Results. With the advent of a wide variety of multimedia projects, it is not always clear which of them belong to augmented reality. Some multimedia use only similar technologies, such as projections, but there is no question of augmented reality. On the example of simple and visual projections, as well as other projects, consider at what point the phenomenon of augmented reality occurs. The analysis of publications that consider the augmented reality and determine the place of augmented reality in various continuums is carried out. Has been determined the conditions for the AR formation as a phenomenon. We discuss the importance of the simultaneous presence of virtual data, narrative, and context. There were also indicated the significance of the relevance of virtual data for AR, the indirect influence of interactivity on the context, and the difference between the essence of augmented reality and ordinary digital modification. Various cases of optical and video mixing are considered conventional and 3D projections, 3D mapping, augmented images. It has been proven that the formation of a narrative is a prerequisite for creating augmented reality and the connection between virtual data and context. The scientific novelty of the work consists in in determining the conditions for the formation of the augmented reality and their characteristics. The practical significance of the results lies in the fact that the verification of compliance with the conditions and characteristics helps to separate augmented reality projects from other types of multimedia and other uses of similar technologies.

In the last two years, we have been struggling with the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. Several cases of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) have already been described as directly related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The clinical course of SAT induced by SARS-CoV-2 can be entirely different from the classic SAT course, and one of the most important differences is a very rapid SAT onset observed in some patients, especially a phenomenon of the simultaneous presence of both diseases. The aim of this report is to compare HLA profile and clinical course of SAT in four patients, in whom SAT was considered as triggered by COVID-19, with special attention paid to the differences between a patient with rare simultaneous presence of SAT and COVID-19, and patients with longer time lag between the diseases. The unusual phenomenon of simultaneous occurrence of COVID-19 and SAT induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection can be HLA-dependent and related to the presence of homozygosity at HLA-B*35. Additionally, the clinical course of SAT triggered by COVID-19 can be HLA-related in regard to the risk of recurrence, and to a variety of other aspects, including severity of thyrotoxicosis.

The present study was aimed at revealing the influence of the mechanical stress induced by water molecules adsorption on the composition of crystalline phases in the ZrO2–3mol%Y2O3-nanoparticles. Three basic methods have been used to determine the phase transition: neutron diffraction, Raman microspectroscopic scanning, and X-ray diffraction. The fact of phase-structural β → α transformation and the simultaneous presence of two polymorphic structural modifications (β is the phase of the tetragonal syngony and α of monoclinic syngony in nanosized particles (9nm)) under normal physical conditions was established by these methods. Satisfactory consistency was achieved between the results obtained using different techniques.

Background: Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) are common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that are diagnosed in infertile couples (cps). In cases with their simultaneous presence in a patient (mixed STI, MSTIs), treatment is complicated by the different sensitivity of microorganisms to antibacterial drugs. Moreover, in cases of complicated infections, the empirical treatment should be started before obtaining the results of drug susceptibilities. Objective: The objective of the current study is to find the effective and well-tolerated combination of drugs for the empirical antibacterial treatment of mixed STIs presented by TV, MG and UU in infertile couples. We also aimed to establish the influence of mixed STIs on semen quality. Method: Our prospective study included 154 infertile couples (308 patients) with confirmed symptomatic MSTIs in one of the couples caused by the simultaneous presence of TV, MG and UU. All couples were randomized on three groups for empirical treatment: Group 1 (n=49 cps, 98 pts) who were treated by initial prescribing of anti-trichomoniasis drug Secnidazole, 2.0 g po followed by Azythromycin 500 mg on day 1 continuing by 250 mg on days 2-7; Group 2 (n=52 cps, 104 pts: Secnidazole, 2.0 g po followed by Josamycin 1000 mg bid for 12 days); Group 3 (n=53 cps, 106 pts: Secnidazole, 2.0 g po followed by Moxifloxacin 400 mg once daily for 12 days). The endpoints were clinical and microbiological cure rates as well as the frequency of side-effects in analyzed groups. We determined the basic parameters of the spermogram and Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation levels in 59 patients with MSTIs before and at the 3rd, 6th and 9th month after pathogens eradication comparing them with results in 63 healthy sperm donors. Result: After the treatment, clinical cure rates in analyzed groups were 82.6% (Group 1) vs 96.1% (Group 2) vs 92.3% (Group 3). Microbiological cure rates (UU+MG) were 73.9 % vs 97.1 % vs 84.5% correspondingly (p<0.05). TV microbiological cure rates were 97.8% vs 98.0% vs 96.1% (p>0.05). Side-effects were registered in 28.6% vs 12.5% vs 18.9% cases correspondingly (p<0.05). In MSTIs patients, we registered the increasing DNA fragmentation rates, leucocytes count and decreasing semen volume, motility, vitality, sperm concentration, total spermatozoa number and number of spermatozoa with normal morphology. At the 6th month after complete pathogens eradication, these parameters approached normal values. Conclusion: At the present time, the combination of Secnidazole+Josamycin can be considered the most effective and well-tolerated for the empirical treatment in patients with MSTIs presented by TV, MG and UU. Complete eradication of these MSTIs in males improves their semen parameters.

Abstract Perceptual organisation is hypothesised as a key in the perception and appreciation of abstract art. Here, we investigated how relational and compositional features affected the perception and aesthetic appreciation of Black Square and Red Square by Kazimir Malevich (1915). We studied how (i) the presence and obliquity of the red square and (ii) the relative configuration of the black and red square affected the detectability of the obliquity of the black square in this artwork. Results showed that the simultaneous presence and obliquity of the red square masked the obliquity of the original black square. The likelihood of the black square being incorrectly perceived as an exact square was always maximum in the original configuration and even slight alterations in the original configuration of the work resulted in the obliquity of the black square to be noticed. The original artwork was more aesthetically preferred compared to its alternatives. We argue that the artist may have intentionally set the configuration to mask the obliquity of the black square and maximise the aesthetic preference.
