Carpe diem, Alma Mater! The Adaptation experience of university education to the changes in the labour market

In the XXI century, the tourism and hospitality industry has become one of the most dynamic sectors of the world economy. The need to train qualified personnel for this sphere has prompted many Russian universities to start training students in service and tourism-related fields of study. The article summarizes twenty years of experience of Ural Federal University tourism department in improving the educational program “Tourism” in terms of interaction with the professional community. Attention is paid to unique programs of additional education and advanced training for specialists in the field, and the areas of analytical, expert activities, and consulting are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of interaction with graduates of the department, whose career achievements in tourism and hospitality in no small measure contributed to the promotion of UrFU in the subject ranking QS Hospitality & Leisure Management.

“Carpe Diem?”: Disjunction Effect of Incidental Affect on Intertemporal Choice

Incidental affect has an important impact on intertemporal choice (IC). This research aimed to test how positive incidental affect influences IC and its underlying mechanisms. We assumed that positive incidental affect may have a disjunction effect on IC that includes or excludes immediate time. Moreover, we examined the role of time perception for the effect of affect on IC. In Study 1, after undergoing affect priming by video clips, participants completed the IC task using a multiple staircase paradigm. Using Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling, we estimated the discount rate parameter by distinguishing “immediate” and “non-immediate” conditions of IC. The participants’ time perception was also measured. In Study 2, apart from the choice preference of IC, we additionally investigated the differences in the participants’ attention to delay and reward attributes before decision making. The results of the two studies indicated that positive incidental affect leads to longer time perception (Study 1) and prior and more attention to the delay attribute of IC (Study 2), which leads individuals to prefer immediate options in the IC (Studies 1 and 2). Moreover, there is a disjunction effect of affect; in other words, the incidental affect did not influence IC excluding immediate time (Studies 1 and 2). This study improves our understanding of the disjunctive effect and its mechanism of inducing a positive incidental affect on IC and thus provides a new perspective on how related decision making can be improved.

Cultural Management of Terror and Worry During the COVID-19 Pandemic: How Religiosity and a Dream of Human Solidarity Help the Polish People Cope

The COVID-19 pandemic, which involves the threat of contracting a potentially fatal disease, can be understood as a source of terror. According to terror management theory, people shield themselves from terror by adopting culturally specific worldviews and protecting self-esteem. The study investigates the protective role of worldviews that are culturally specific to Poles: religiosity and social solidarity. The hypothesis was that Poles who tend to worry, entertain these worldviews and are more likely to maintain high self-esteem and concentrate on the current moment (carpe diem), which theoretically allows them to reduce future-related anxiety. Path analysis confirmed that self-esteem, the centrality of religiosity, and expectation of solidarity due to the COVID-19 pandemic mediate the relationship between the worry trait and carpe diem.

Poeta de la generación del sesenta, Marco Martos (Piura, 1942) es una figura central de la literatura peruana. Catedrático de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, estudioso de la obra de César Vallejo, Martos publicó cuatro poemarios notables: Cuadernos de quejas y contentamientos (1969), Donde no se ama (1974), Carpe diem (1979) y El silbo de los aires amorosos (1981). Gran lector de los clásicos de la literatura española y cercano a la poesía conversacional, el autor piurano ha sabido conjugar la ironía con un conocimiento muy profundo de la tradición literaria occidental.

REPRESENTAÇÕES FILOSÓFICAS SOBRE AS MULHERES DESDE A MODERNIDADE E O IMPACTO NA FIGURA DA PROFESSORA: PERSPECTIVAS ATUAIS

O fio condutor do artigo atravessa o tema da mulher no processo das mudanças de diversas ordens interagindo com a visão filosófico-educacional gestada desde a modernidade. Exploraremos, nos limites deste escrito, as representações elaboradas pelos filósofos sobre as mulheres em cujas discussões sustentavam na “natureza” os traços característicos de gênero e que alcança, especialmente, a figura da professora. Na chamada pós-modernidade, a ideia de liquidez das noções, antes absolutas, apontam para a defesa da “construção de gênero”, dentre outros temas. A vida passa a não ter o sentido antes passível de explicação pelas verdades e certeza dos conhecimentos, posto que na contemporaneidade predomina a crença na efemeridade, na valorização das experiências imediatas dos momentos únicos e fugazes, na busca incessante do prazer, o carpe diem. Apresentamos os traços distintivos de gênero na modernidade, tempo favorável a mudanças sobretudo para o universo feminino tal a transição ocorrida “do lar à projeção da mulher em outras instâncias sociais graças à emergência de condições objetivas” como a industrialização e outros fatores que vão possibilitando o “movimento feminista” que, no percurso histórico de organização revela diferentes momentos efervescentes de acúmulo de reivindicações e avanços, chamados de “ondas”. Instituída também, no contexto do patriarcalismo, a “escola moderna”, sustentada por valores burgueses, torna-se mais um fator de inspiração das mulheres para a sua libertação, engrossando a lista de reivindicações. Com um novo conjunto de ideias acopladas numa visão anti-metafísica logo, contrária à “natureza humana”, à verdade absoluta, ao saber definitivo e direcionador do comportamento na busca da ordem e progresso, chegamos ao modelo contemporâneo de sociedade frente a qual a escola vê-se impelida a se transformar, de alguma forma. Usamos autores emblemáticos para o tratamento do tema em fontes diversas como livros, artigos, trabalhos acadêmicos muito dos quais disponíveis na internet.

The Home Front

Wartime America underwent rapid transformation; men, women, and children saw their social roles redefined; and economic and racial divisions grew deeper and sharper edged. Theater was the perfect medium to represent home-front tensions and anxieties as they were manifested on the local level: the congenital civilian thrust into the military life as in Strip for Action and This Is the Army; the family pressured by rapid and dynamic social transformations as in Three's a Family, A New Life, and Men to the Sea; couples pressured by the carpe-diem spirit of the wartime romance as in On the Town and Those Endearing Young Charms; adolescents, often tempted into juvenile delinquency with the freedom of looser rules and mores as in Janie and Pick-Up Girl; men and women balancing patriotism and selfishness, as in The Voice of the Turtle and the shocking Tomorrow the World.

"Mas afinal, o que querem as mulheres?" O lugar da mulher na obra Em surdina

Em Surdina (1933) é o segundo romance publicado por Lúcia Miguel Pereira. Como explica Luís Bueno (2006), essa obra apresenta forte tendência documental, comum nos romances sociais da década de 30. Assim, põe em destaque as contradições do tempo, desde a desagregação de valores, passando aos costumes, ao papel mediador do trabalho na construção das identidades, à economia e às relações internacionais. Contudo, o mais evidente diálogo com o contexto pode ser entrevisto na postura das personagens, sobretudo no temor de viver a vida por algumas mulheres. Há, na narrativa, aquelas criaturas que experimentam diversos tipos de sensações, porém a narrativa é protagonizada por Cecília. Esta tem sua existência questionada a partir do pedido de casamento. Se no discurso tradicional, o casamento constitui uma forma de controle do homem sobre a mulher, contraditoriamente, nessa narrativa, o casamento é posto, na perspectiva crítica do narrador, como a única forma encontrada pela mulher para gozar a vida. Esse convite ao carpe diem provoca em Cecília certo questionamento sobre si mesma e sobre o contexto tradicional que condiciona as práticas, sobretudo das mulheres. Portanto, a narrativa nos apresenta mecanismos de reflexões sobre o modo de vida da mulher e o lugar ocupado por ela naquela sociedade, tanto a ficcional quanto a real.
