In December 2019, COVID-19 was reported in Wuhan, China. Most of the studies related to the psychological impact and compliance with staying at home due to COVID-19 focused on ten days or one month after the initial “stay-at-home” phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The early psychological impact and behavior change to COVID-19 during the Chinese Spring Festival (the start time for recommendations to stay at home) is uncertain. In this study, people from 23 provinces in China were recruited to participate in an online survey, using Credamo. Psychological impact and compliance with staying at home were evaluated by a self-designed and validated questionnaire. The results indicated that anxiety was the most often reported feeling (mean: 3.69), followed by sadness (mean: 3.63). Participants employed in foreign-owned companies were most likely to express anxiety and sadness. Overall, 61.8% of participants reported hardly going out, whereas 2.4% said they frequently went out during the initial “stay-at-home” phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants with higher levels of anxiety and sadness were most likely to stay at home against the spread of COVID-19, as were female gender. This survey is an important study of the first reaction to staying at home during the initial “stay-at-home” phase coinciding with Chinese Spring Festival. Our findings identified factors associated with higher level of psychological impact and better compliance with staying at home recommendations during Chinese Spring Festival. The findings can be used to formulate precaution interventions to improve the mental health of vulnerable groups and high uptake of policy during the COVID-19 epidemic.

The aim of the presented study is a genetic characterization of the hexaploid wheat Triticum aestivum L. Two approaches were used for the genealogical study of hexaploid wheats—the complete sequencing of chloroplast DNA and PCR-based haplotype analysis of the fourth intron of Wknox1d and of the fifth-to-sixth-exon region of Wknox1b. The complete chloroplast DNA sequences of 13 hexaploid wheat samples were determined: Free-threshing—T. aestivum subsp. aestivum, one sample; T. aestivum subsp. compactum, two samples; T. aestivum subsp. sphaerococcum, one sample; T. aestivum subsp. carthlicoides, four samples. Hulled—T. aestivum subsp. spelta, three samples; T. aestivum subsp. vavilovii jakubz., two samples. The comparative analysis of complete cpDNA sequences of 20 hexaploid wheat samples (13 samples in this article plus 7 samples sequenced in this laboratory in 2018) was carried out. PCR-based haplotype analysis of the fourth intron of Wknox1d and of the fifth-to-sixth exon region of Wknox1b of all 20 hexaploid wheat samples was carried out. The 20 hexaploid wheat samples (13 samples in this article plus 7 samples in 2018) can be divided into two groups—T. aestivum subsp. spelta, three samples and T. aestivum subsp. vavilovii collected in Armenia, and the remaining 16 samples, including T. aestivum subsp. vavilovii collected in Europe (Sweden). If we take the cpDNA of Chinese Spring as a reference, 25 SNPs can be identified. Furthermore, 13–14 SNPs can be identified in T. aestivum subsp. spelta and subsp. vavilovii (Vav1). In the other samples up to 11 SNPs were detected. 22 SNPs are found in the intergenic regions, 2 found in introns, and 10 SNPs were found in the genes, of which seven are synonymous. PCR-based haplotype analysis of the fourth intron of Wknox1d and the fifth-to-sixth-exon region of Wknox1b provides an opportunity to make an assumption that hexaploid wheats T. aestivum subsp. macha var. palaeocolchicum and var. letshckumicum differ from other macha samples by the absence of a 42 bp insertion in the fourth intron of Wknox1d. One possible explanation for this observation would be that two Aegilops tauschii Coss. (A) and (B) participated in the formation of hexaploids through the D genome: Ae. tauschii (A)—macha (1–5, 7, 8, 10–12), and Ae. tauschii (B)—macha M6, M9, T. aestivum subsp. aestivum cv. ‘Chinese Spring’ and cv. ‘Red Doly’.

Public emergencies often have an impact on the production and operation of enterprises. Timely and effective quantitative measurement of enterprises’ offline resumption of work after public emergencies is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policies. In this study, we analyze the level of work resumption after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-influenced Chinese Spring Festival in 2020 with night time lights remote sensing data and Baidu Migration data. The results are verified by official statistics and facts, which demonstrates that COVID-19 has seriously affected the resumption of work after the Spring Festival holiday. Since 10 February, work has been resuming in localities. By the end of March, the work resumption index of most cities exceeded 70% and even Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou had achieved complete resumption of work. Wuhan only started to resume work in the last week of March due to the more severe outbreak. Although the level of work resumption is gradually increasing in every area, the specific situation of resumption of work varies in different regions. The process of work resumption in coastal areas is faster, while the process is relatively slow in inland cities.

The diploid form of Tall Wheatgrass, Thinopyrum elongatum (Host) D. R. Dewey (2n = 2x = 14, EE genome) has a high level of resistance to Fusarium head blight. The symptoms do not spread beyond the inoculated floret following point inoculation. Using the series of E genome chromosome additions in a bread wheat cultivar Chinese Spring (CS) background, the resistance was found to be localized to the long arm of chromosome 7E. CS mutant ph1b was used to induce recombination between chromosome 7E, present in the 7E(7D) substitution and homoeologous wheat chromosomes. Multivalent chromosome associations were detected in BC1 hybrids attesting to the effectiveness of the ph1b mutant. Genetic markers specific for chromosome 7E were used to estimate the size of the 7E introgression in the wheat genome. Using single sequence repeat (SSR) markers specific for homoeologous wheat chromosome 7, introgressions were detected on wheat chromosomes 7A, 7B and 7D. Some of the introgression lines were resistant to Fusarium head blight.

Many wheat varieties have the potential to develop unacceptably high levels of α-amylase in the grains if exposed to a cool temperature shock or simply cool temperature during the early to middle stages of grain filling. This phenomenon is referred to as late maturity α-amylase (LMA). The enzyme persists in the grain until harvest and may result in wheat with a low Falling Number that does not meet receival and export specifications. Resistance to LMA is therefore a valuable target for wheat breeders and wheat industries in general. Genetic evidence implicating a locus on the long arm of chromosome 7B in variation in LMA phenotype was confirmed in this investigation. Through intensive fine-mapping an ent-copalyl diphosphate synthase (CPS), hitherto named LMA-1, was identified as the likely candidate gene associated with variation in LMA phenotype. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) within the LMA-1 coding sequence of Chinese Spring, Maringa and Halberd result in either prematurely terminated or functionally altered proteins that are associated with useful levels of resistance to LMA. LMA-1 transcripts detected in de-embryonated grain tissue from around 15 days after anthesis, several days before the synthesis of α-amylase, were low in the resistant varieties Chinese Spring and Maringa compared with LMA susceptible genotype Spica. This was associated with a dramatic reduction in the concentrations of intermediates in the gibberellin biosynthesis pathway such as GA19, evidence that LMA-1 was functioning as CPS in the gibberellin biosynthesis pathway. A survey of a large collection of Australian and international wheat varieties distinguished 9 major haplotypes at the LMA-1 locus. Generally, within classes, there was notable variation for LMA phenotype and evidence for genotypes whose resistance is presumed to be due to genetic loci located elsewhere on the wheat genome. Further investigation is required to characterize the sequence of steps between LMA-1 and α-amylase synthesis as well as to gain a better understanding of the role and potential impact of other genetic loci. Diagnostic markers for sources of resistance and SNP variation reported in this study should assist breeders to deploy resistance associated with LMA-1 variants in breeding programs.
