This chapter introduces Doubtful Readers: Print, Poetry, and the Reading Public in Early Modern England. Early modern lyric poetry was a social form, but print publication made poems available to anyone who either had the means to a buy a book or knew someone who did, radically expanding the early modern reading public. The study focuses on the period between the maturing of the market for printed English literature in the 1590s and the emergence of the professional poet following the Restoration to acknowledge changes in both the economics and aesthetics of poetry book publication. It argues that publication in its broadest sense is a form of mediation between multiple agents and material forms. Because print did not change poetry in a single way, this book presents a series of case studies. This chapter concludes with a brief overview of each.

Boris Z. Doktorov

The book is constructed in the form of an interview of the famous Soviet/Russian sociologist and americanist doctor of sciences N.P. Popov with doctor of sciences B.Z. Doktorov, who developed the genre of scientific memoirs and conducted over a hundred interviews with Russian and American sociologists. The paper covers three main topics. Like any biography, this is a personal story of the author — his youth in the post-war years, the path to the profession of a journalist and sociologist, the worldview of the “sixties”. Journalism leads the author, as well as many American pollsters, to the study of public opinion, at first American, continued at the Institute of US and Canadian Studies. He like no other is closely acquainted with the work of leading American pollsters: George Gallup, Louis Harris, Warren Mitofsky, Mervin Field and other gurus. The study of American polling technology and public opinion on socio-political problems and electoral orientations of the population were used by the author in further work at Soviet and Russian centers for the study of public opinion, first of all – at the All-Union center for the study of public opinion (VTSIOM), created in 1988, where he was offered a job by Tatyana Zaslavskaya and Boris Grushin. They also recommended him later as head of the sociological department of the presidential administration right before the 1996 election. The book includes a number of articles by the author on Russian and American public opinion in different years.

The publication of religious books recently has been in line with the publication of books of other genres. It is because of the increase in the demands by the readers in addition to the design of the book covers which has been made up more interesting. Hence, this research was aimed to identify the influence of visual illustration and photography displayed on book covers which preferred by the readers. Sign theory by Peirce (1839) and Semiotic Analysis by Stokes (2003) were applied for the purpose of data analysis. A book published by Telaga Biru Sdn. Bhd. entitled Ikon Syabab by Umar Muhammad Noor (2014) has been made as to the research data focusing on the taxonomy aspect of its cover. The results showed that the proper use of pictures was undeniably able to attract the readers to buy the religious book currently in the market. This research also was predicted to be able to contribute to the national socio-economic interest, generate a rich cultural society and elevate the percentage of book publication in Malaysia.

Alexis Easley

In this essay, Alexis Easley points to the significance of the marginal space of the ‘facts and scraps’ column for women writers and readers alike. As a precursor to the women’s columns and the dedicated women’s press that proliferated in the final decades of the century, the ‘facts and scraps’ columns of cheap Sunday newspapers are here shown to have ‘provided opportunities for women to publish poetry aimed at a mass-market reading audience’ (p.413). The exposure provided in this context, as well as through the practice of poems being reprinted in other newspapers, was a double-edged sword for women writers in professional terms: on the one hand, this practice ‘did not make writing newspaper poetry a lucrative enterprise’ while on the other, it ‘provided a means for women poets to establish recognisable public identities in the popular press–a visibility that sometimes led to book publication’ (p.414). The example of Eliza Cook (1812–89), a contributor to the ‘facts and scraps’ column of the Weekly Dispatch (1795–1961), shows ‘how women writers could capitalise upon opportunities that arose with the formation of new publishing media in order to establish themselves in a male-dominated literary marketplace’ (p.414).
