Ingemar Nordin’s Using Knowledge: On the Rationality of Science, Technology, and Medicine is a critical rationalist examination of medicine as a social system, largely science-based, but including quackery. Thus rationality is limited, as befits the author’s fallibilism.

O problema da racionalidade da ciência no século XX e as implicações para um ensino crítico e reflexivo da ciência

ResumoAo longo do século XX a concepção tradicional de racionalidade da ciência sofreu duras críticas, principalmente após os trabalhos de Thomas Kuhn a respeito dos critérios de evolução das teorias científicas ao longo da história. Assim, filósofos da ciência assumiram a tarefa de redefinir o que se entende por racionalidade da ciência, garantindo novos critérios para salvaguardar a consistência do juízo científico na articulação das ideias e teorias. Neste artigo, evidenciam-se essas questões para se discutir ações que possam promover uma educação científica crítica e reflexiva, contemplando a relação entre Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade e uma compreensão mais adequada da natureza da ciência. AbstractThroughout the twentieth century, the traditional conception of rationality of Science suffered harsh criticism, especially after Thomas Kuhn's work concerning the development criteria of scientific theories throughout history. Thus, philosophers of Science have assumed the task of redefining what is meant by rationality of Science, guaranteeing new criteria to safeguard the consistency of scientific judgment in the articulation of ideas and theories. In this article, these issues are highlighted to discuss actions that can promote critical and reflective scientific education, considering the relationship between Science, Technology and Society and a better understanding of the nature of Science.Keywords: Rationality of Science; Nature of Science; Science education.

A RACIONALIDADE TECNOCIENTÍFICA E O SEU DESAFIO À FILOSOFIA DA CIÊNCIA

resumo: A Filosofia da Ciência ocupa-se com a racionalidade da ciência, mas a ciência tradicional vai sendo crescentemente substituída pela tecnociência, que implica uma diferente racionalidade, ou seja, uma diferente maneira de justificar seus propósitos e métodos. Neste artigo descrevemos as origens e a evolução histórica da tecnociência e as mudanças que ela introduz na pesquisa científica, particularmente no seu ethos. Essas mudanças deveriam causar uma transformação na Filosofia da Ciência, fazendo com que inclua questões éticas e políticas junto com as epistemológicas, e que trabalhe em cooperação com outros estudos sobre a ciência.abstract: Philosophy of science deals with the rationality of science, but traditional science is increasingly replaced by technoscience, which implies a different rationality, that is, a different way of justifying its goals and methods. In this paper we describe the origins and historical evolution of technoscience, and the changes it introduces in scientific research, particularly in its ethos. Those changes should cause a transformation in the philosophy of science, making it to include ethical and political questions along with epistemological ones and to work in cooperation with other studies on science.
