Incompatible observables underlie pillars of quantum physics such as contextuality and entanglement. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is a fundamental limitation on the measurement of the product of incompatible observables, a 'joint' measurement. However, recently a method using weak measurement has experimentally demonstrated joint measurement. This method [Lundeen, J. S., and Bamber, C. Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 070402, 2012] delivers the standard expectation value of the product of observables, even if they are incompatible. A drawback of this method is that it requires coupling each observable to a distinct degree of freedom (DOF), i.e., a disjoint Hilbert space. Typically, this 'read-out' system is an unused internal DOF of the measured particle. Unfortunately, one quickly runs out of internal DOFs, which limits the number of observables and types of measurements one can make. To address this limitation, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a technique to perform a joint weak-measurement of two incompatible observables using only one DOF as a read-out system. We apply our scheme to directly measure the density matrix of photon polarization states.

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) has a promise of unconditionally secure communication between the remote sides. The real-world QKD implementations, however, have numerous loopholes, both of engeneering and physical origin, and compromise the security promise. In this work, we investigate two attack strategies on the passive side channel of the light source along with the optimal cloning attack on the BB84 protocol with decoy-states. We calculate an upper bound of a secret key rate for these situations and show that the joint measurement attack on the signal and side channel degree of freedom is more effective to the adversary.

Information about water level is essential for hydrological monitoring and flood/ drought risk assessment. In a large part of Italian river network, in situ instruments for measuring water level are rare or lacking. Here we consider the satellite measurements of water level retrieved by Copernicus altimetric missions (Sentinel 3A, Sentinel 3B, Jason 2/3), and compare these with in situ data, from 19 gauging stations in Italy with a river section in the range of [50, 555] m. The results highlight the potentiality of altimetric satellite measurements for water level retrieval in a case study of Italian rivers. By comparing synchronous satellite and in situ water level difference (i.e., difference between two successive measurements in time of satellite data compared to the difference of two successive measurements in time of in situ data), we found a median value of Pearson correlation of 0.79 and 0.37 m of RMSE. Then, from water level differences, we extracted the satellite water level values with two different procedures: (1) assuming as the initial water level of the satellite measurements the first joint measurement (satellite–in situ data) and (2) calibrating the initial water level, minimizing the mean absolute error metric. The results show the feasibility of using satellite data for water level retrieval in an operative and automatic perspective.

Oligonucleotide-conjugated antibodies have allowed for joint measurement of surface protein abundance and the transcriptome in single cells using high-throughput sequencing. Extending these measurements to gene regulatory proteins in the nucleus would provide a powerful means to link changes in abundance of trans-acting TFs to changes in activity of cis-acting elements and expression of target genes. Here, we introduce Nuclear protein Epitope, chromatin Accessibility, and Transcriptome sequencing (NEAT-seq), a technique to simultaneously measure nuclear protein abundance, chromatin accessibility, and the transcriptome in single cells. We apply this technique to profile CD4 memory T cells using a panel of master transcription factors (TFs) that drive distinct helper T cell subsets and regulatory T cells (Tregs) and identify examples of TFs with regulatory activity gated by three distinct mechanisms: transcription, translation, and regulation of chromatin binding. Furthermore, we identify regulatory elements and target genes associated with each TF, which we use to link a non-coding GWAS SNP within a GATA motif to both strong allele-specific chromatin accessibility in cells expressing high levels of GATA3 protein, and a putative target gene.

Understanding the evolution of molecular electronic structures is the key to explore and control photochemical reactions and photobiological processes. Subjected to strong laser fields, electronic holes are formed upon ionization and evolve in the attosecond timescale. It is crucial to probe the electronic dynamics in real time with attosecond-temporal and atomic-spatial precision. Here, we present molecular attosecond interferometry that enables the in situ manipulation of holes in carbon dioxide molecules via the interferometry of the phase-locked electrons (propagating in opposite directions) of a laser-triggered rotational wave packet. The joint measurement on high-harmonic and terahertz spectroscopy (HATS) provides a unique tool for understanding electron dynamics from picoseconds to attoseconds. The optimum phases of two-color pulses for controlling the electron wave packet are precisely determined owing to the robust reference provided with the terahertz pulse generation. It is noteworthy that the contribution of HOMO-1 and HOMO-2 increases reflecting the deformation of the hole as the harmonic order increases. Our method can be applied to study hole dynamics of complex molecules and electron correlations during the strong-field process. The threefold control through molecular alignment, laser polarization, and the two-color pulse phase delay allows the precise manipulation of the transient hole paving the way for new advances in attochemistry.

Capturing finger joint angle information has important applications in human–computer interaction and hand function evaluation. In this paper, a novel wearable data glove is proposed for capturing finger joint angles. A sensing unit based on a grating strip and an optical detector is specially designed for finger joint angle measurement. To measure the angles of finger joints, 14 sensing units are arranged on the back of the glove. There is a sensing unit on the back of each of the middle phalange, proximal phalange, and metacarpal of each finger, except for the thumb. For the thumb, two sensing units are distributed on the back of the proximal phalange and metacarpal, respectively. Sensing unit response tests and calibration experiments are conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using the designed sensing unit for finger joint measurement. Experimental results of calibration show that the comprehensive precision of measuring the joint angle of a wooden finger model is 1.67%. Grasping tests and static digital gesture recognition experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the designed glove. We achieve a recognition accuracy of 99% by using the designed glove and a generalized regression neural network (GRNN). These preliminary experimental results indicate that the designed data glove is effective in capturing finger joint angles.

The system analysis of the influence of multiplicative interference acting simultaneously with additive interference on the accuracy of measurement of two information parameters of the useful signal is carried out. The dependences of the influence of multiplicative interference on the accuracy of measuring the frequency and time of arrival of radio pulses are obtained.
