Introduction: Health information management is one of the major pillars in a health system that improves the effectiveness and efficiency of health services. It is essential to assess the patient perception towards re-engineered services provide through Hospital Information Management Systems (HIMSs) and how this implementation affects the doctor-patient relationship. The objective of the study was to describe the extent of patient satisfaction towards Out-Patient Department (OPD) services, pharmacy service and patient physician relationship in the OPD, re-engineered through a HIMS, at the Castle Street Hospital for Women (CSHW), Sri Lanka. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among 362 out-patients aged over 18 years attending the OPD of the CSHW during 2018-2019. Consecutive sampling method, and an interviewer-administrated questionnaire were used to collect data. The quantitative analysis was done using the SPSS software version 23. The sentiment analysis was performed to analyze comments given by patients using the Rapid Miner software. Results: All participants were females with a mean age of 41years (±13.58). Almost all participants were satisfied with overall services provided by the OPD (99.7%) and the pharmacy (98.4%). The majority (65.3%) agreed that implementation of the HIMS had improved the doctor-patient relationship. All reported comments regarding the re-engineered services of the OPD were ‘positive’. The study also suggests considering providing information in all common languages while announcing the patient’s OPD number at the waiting area in future implementations. Conclusions: The majority of patients were satisfied with the overall OPD services provided through implementation of the HIMS at the CSHW, Sri Lanka. Health information management systems help gather, compile, and analyze health data to help manage population health and reduce healthcare costs. It can support the clinical decision, help diagnose individual patients, and improve patient care. In this study, a personal health information management system based on Java is presented. Based on the Java platform, the overall hierarchical structure of the system is designed including a health information management module, personal health data synchronization module, and full-text retrieval module, to realize the functions of the system. To improve the security of personal health information, the data encryption standard (DES) algorithm is implemented to encrypt and protect personal healthcare information. The system is evaluated in terms of health information acquisition accuracy, information security, and system response time. To verify the robustness of the proposed health information management system, it is compared with two related studies. The maximum health information acquisition accuracy of the system is 99%, the safety factor reported is above 0.9, and the maximum response time is only 0.8 s. The experimental results show that the designed personal health information management system can collect health information more accurately and ensure the security of information, and the overall response time is shorter.

UNSTRUCTURED The Health Information Management (HIM) field’s contribution to health care delivery is invaluable, especially in a pandemic context where the need for accurate diagnosis will hasten responsive evidence-based decision making. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a unique opportunity to transform the practice of HIM and bring more awareness to the role the frontline workers play behind the scenes safeguarding reliable, comprehensive, accurate and timely health information. This transformation will support future research, utilization management, public health surveillance and forecasting and enable key stakeholders to plan and ensure equitable health care resource allocation, especially for the most vulnerable populations. In this paper, we juxtapose critical health literacy, public policy, and health information management perspectives to understand the COVID-19 infodemic and new opportunities for health information management in infodemiology.

Abstract Background Healthcare organizations have begun to adopt personal health records (PHR) systems to engage patients, but little is known about factors associated with the adoption of PHR systems at an organizational level. The objective of this study is to investigate factors associated with healthcare organizations’ adoption of PHR systems in South Korea. Methods The units of analysis were hospitals with more than 100 beds. Study data of 313 hospitals were collected from May 1 to June 30, 2020. The PHR adoption status for each hospital was collected from PHR vendors and online searches. Adoption was then confirmed by downloading the hospital’s PHR app and the PHR app was examined to ascertain its available functions. One major outcome variable was PHR adoption status at hospital level. Data were analysed by logistic regressions using SAS 9.4 version. Results Out of 313 hospitals, 103 (32.9%) hospitals adopted PHR systems. The nurse-patient ratio was significantly associated with PHR adoption (OR 0.758; 0.624 to 0.920, p = 0.005). The number of health information management staff was associated with PHR adoption (OR 1.622; 1.228 to 2.141, p = 0.001). The number of CTs was positively associated with PHR adoption (OR 5.346; 1.962 to 14.568, p = 0.001). Among the hospital characteristics, the number of beds was significantly related with PHR adoption in the model of standard of nursing care (OR 1.003; 1.001 to 1.005, p < 0.001), HIM staff (OR 1.004; 1.002 to 1.006, p < 0.001), and technological infrastructure (OR 1.050; 1.003 to 1.006, p < 0.001). Conclusions One-third of study hospitals had adopted PHR systems. Standard of nursing care as well as information technology infrastructure in terms of human resources for health information management and advanced technologies were significantly associated with adoption of PHR systems. A favourable environment for adopting new technologies in general may be associated with the adoption and use of PHR systems.

Health information technology systems have the capacity to improve health outcomes for the patients thus ensuring quality and efficient services. Health information systems (HIS) are important tools in guidance towards patient safety and better outcomes. However, still, morbidity and mortality attributed to medical errors remain an important issue that needs to be addressed. The objective of the present study was to assess the health information system in terms of technological, environmental, organizational and human factors affecting the adoption as well as the perceptions of stakeholders along with barriers and constraints related to successful implementation. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. Prospective data was collected from primary sources by self-administering the pre-validated questionnaires as well as by physical verification of the availability of equipment. After data collection, data was analyzed to assess the health information management systems. The results of the present study showed that the health information system in Pakistan is not up to the mark. The equipment was mostly unavailable at the primary healthcare facilities. The staff was also unsatisfied with the available services. Administrative, financial and human constraints were identified as the major barriers towards successful implementation and management of HIS. The present study concluded that the health information system of Pakistan needs to be revamped. Health information management system partially existed at district and sub-district offices, while was completely absent at tertiary, secondary and primary healthcare levels. The poor adoption of health information technology systems at healthcare facilities might largely be attributed to insufficient human resources with limited resources and budget allocation for health in Pakistan. Effective and timely strategies involving all important stakeholders and healthcare professionals must be designed and implemented at the National level to restructure an affordable, resilient and quality healthcare system.

Background: While information and communication technology has continued to advance, privacy of personal health information (PHI) has remained a challenge for health information management (HIM) professionals. Objective: This study aims to examine the awareness, attitude and practice relating to PHI privacy among HIM professionals in South Korea. Method: A survey questionnaire was developed for the study based on critical appraisal of relevant literature and expert consensus. It was completed by a sample of 312 respondents who were members of the Korean Health Information Management Association, over the age of 21, and worked in a healthcare organisation. Demographic data and questionnaire items (assessed on a 5-point Likert-type scale) were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-tests and ANOVA. Results: Mean scores and SDs for awareness, attitude and practice related to PHI privacy were calculated: 4.21 (0.60) for awareness, 4.17 (0.60) for attitude and 4.31 (0.63) for practice. Significant positive correlations were found between awareness and attitude scores (r = 0.765, p < 0.01); awareness and practice scores (r = 0.585; p < 0.01); and attitude and action scores (r = 0.672; p < 0.01). HIM professionals’ awareness, attitude, and practice towards PHI privacy differed significantly according to age, level of education, years of HIM experience, type of employment, main task, number of completed privacy education activities within the previous 3 years and whether or not they had signed a pledge of confidentiality on PHI. Better-educated, full-time employed respondents, those who had completed a greater number of privacy education activities and had more experience as HIM professionals, achieved higher scores on awareness, attitude and practice than did other respondents. These differences were all statistically significant ( p < 0.01). Conclusion: Although causality cannot be inferred from results of this study, findings suggest that there is a relationship between PHI being a core responsibility of HIM professionals and their subsequent awareness, attitude and practice to ensure its privacy and confidentiality. To improve privacy practice, educational efforts should be prioritised and supported at all levels, including national, organisational, individual, and by professional HIM associations.

Objectives: To summarize the recent literature and research and present a selection of the best papers published in 2020 in the field of Health Information Management (HIM) and Health Informatics. Methods: A systematic review of the literature for the IMIA Yearbook HIM section was performed by the two section editors with the help of a medical librarian. We searched bibliographic databases for HIM-related papers using both MeSH headings and keywords in titles and abstracts. A shortlist of the fifteen best candidate papers was first selected by section editors before being peer-reviewed by independent external reviewers. Results: The three major themes of Health Information Exchange (transmitting, sharing, and accessing patient health-related data and information) (HIE), Data Quality, and Privacy and Security make up 80% of the fifteen papers, with individual papers on personal health records, information governance and the professionalism of the HIM field. Conclusions: Traditional HIM concerns about HIM practice and workforce as well as issues about the data in electronic health records (EHRs) including data quality, coding, health information exchange among entities within the healthcare systems and privacy and confidentiality continue to be a large part of the HIM research literature. Although there was little research applying these themes to pandemic concerns, HIM professionals have the expertise to make ccontributions to public health informatics research and this research would benefit from their involvement.

Objectives: To identify gaps and challenges in health informatics and health information management during the COVID-19 pandemic. To describe solutions and offer recommendations that can address the identified gaps and challenges. Methods: A literature review of relevant peer-reviewed and grey literature published from January 2020 to December 2020 was conducted to inform the paper. Results: The literature revealed several themes regarding health information management and health informatics challenges and gaps: information systems and information technology infrastructure; data collection, quality, and standardization; and information governance and use. These challenges and gaps were often driven by public policy and funding constraints. Conclusions: COVID-19 exposed complexities related to responding to a world-wide, fast moving, quickly spreading novel virus. Longstanding gaps and ongoing challenges in the local, national, and global health and public health information systems and data infrastructure must be addressed before we are faced with another global pandemic.
