Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) contributes to several impacts both for human health and the environment. Periodical measurement of NO2 at industrial and residential areas needs comprehensive and reliable instrumentation; long-interference-free measures with minimum maintenance and re-calibration. DOAS can be used as a direct measurement technique based on specific absorption characteristics of NO2 follow Beer-Lambert law. This research applies a low-cost folded path photometer for measurement NO2 in air. Cheap tubular acrylic used as a detection cell with a 3D printed framework makes it compact, modular, and flexible. Evaluation of the DOAS conducted by instrument test responses using NO2 gas. The estimated LOD was ~ 1263 pb using 2 nm resolution of the spectrometer and 6-meter detection cell length. Deviation of the DOAS estimated to be 0.8% at high concentration and 2.85% at a low concentration based on DOAS calibration. An intercomparison between methods used to evaluate instrument performance to measure NO2 using emission from a motorcycle with coefficient correlation (R) 0.649 for paired DOAS-ASTM D1607 Griesz Saltzmann Method 0.846 for paired DOAS-Electrochemical Gas Analyzer. This significant correlation is caused by different respond time between paired methods, while it is still comparable for NO2 measurement.

A multistage damage detection method is introduced in this work that uses piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers to excite/sense the Lamb wave signals. A continuous wavelet transformation (CWT), based on the Gabor wavelet, is applied to accurately process the complicated wave signals caused by the damage. For a network of transducers, the damage can be detected in one detection cell based on the signals scattered by the damage, and then it can be quantitatively estimated by three detection stages using the outer tangent circle and least-squares methods. First, a single-stage damage detection method is carried out by exciting a transducer at the center of the detection cell to locate the damaged subcell. Then, the corner transducers are excited in the second and third stages of detection to improve the damage detection, especially the size estimation. The method does not require any baseline signal, and it only utilizes the same arrangement of transducers and the same data processing technique in all stages. The results from previous detection stages contribute to the improvement of damage detection in the subsequent stages. Both numerical simulation and experimental evaluation were used to verify that the method can accurately quantify the damage location and size. It was also found that the size of the detection cell plays a vital role in the accuracy of the results in this Lamb-wave-based multistage damage detection method.

A particle detection chain based on CMOS-SOI VCO circuit is presented. The solution is used for the recognition and the tracking of a given particle at circuit level. TCAD simulation of the detector has been performed on a 3×3 matrix of diodes based detector for particles recognition and tracking. The current response of the detector has been used for a case study in order to determine the ability of the chain to recognize an alpha particle crossing a 3×3 detection cell. The detection limit of the proposed solution is investigated and discussed in this paper.
