Public school teachers in Switzerland often feel bound by decisions made by ministries of education as to materials used in the classroom. In teacher training, teachers are often taught superficially about reflective practices, equity, and equality, but in their training to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL), the focus is too often on the mechanical aspects of foreign language teaching and the examples provided are often not provocative enough to allow for an anti-bias stance to education. Yet this stance is a tenet of most national curricula and is to precede subject-specific curricular aims. Therefore, neither teachers nor materials should shy away from or banalize topics around civil rights and social change. This chapter provides examples of how the dispositions for culturally responsive pedagogy scale and teaching tolerance social justice scales can be used in teacher training for analyzing and planning out lessons. Examples from lessons on the Black Lives Matter movement and general suggestions act as springboards for rethinking and unpacking EFL teaching.

<div>Indonesia is a religion based country. Religion studies should be positioned as school’s curriculum priority, both in public and private school. Integrated Christianity and moral studies might be the solution of conflicts within family, school, community, both national and international societies. One of many values that urgently needs to be promoted is an attitude of tolerance in facing our multicultural society. School as an educational institution has an important role in teaching tolerance skill to students as early age. One of the challenges is finding the right method to deliver the abstract concepts to children who are in the stage of pre-operational concrete. This research has done an introductionary study towards the bullying case that happened earlier in the researchers workplace 4th and 5th graders within 4 months. Therefore, this research address the urgency of an integrated curriculum of Christianity studies with moral studies practices, specifically on multicultural values through experiential learning with filmed role-play. Research was conducted in XYZ School for primary 3, 4 and 5. This instructional strategy resulted in increase of attitude of tolerance both in cognitive and behavior domain, but has no increase in the affective domain. All respondents agree by implementing filmed role-play has contributed to their deeper understanding towards the concept of tolerance.</div>

This qualitative study tries to explore the problems faced by the Syrian Refugee primary school students who immigrated to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) with their friends in the educational settings and the solutions to those problems from the perspectives of those students. The qualitative data were collected through semi-structural interviews from the 15 Syrian Students in different grades. The data were analyzed by the content analysis and descriptive analysis technique in NVivo 12. It was found out that the students were exposed the mostly ‘’ violence/ hit’’, ‘’ be disturbed’’ and ‘’ignorance’’ by their classmates. The refugee students think that those problems can be solved by their teachers, principles, and families. Some of the students said that they could solve the problems they faced by ‘’ staying away’’ or by ‘’fighting with those who behave badly.’’ Based on the interview decoding, all the Syrian refugee students expect ‘’ not to exclude them’’, ‘’respect’’ and ‘’love’’. According to these results, providing social-psychological support, language teaching programs, and teaching tolerance to local students would help to solve the immigrant students’ problems having with their friends at school.

Today, in connection with the aggravation of the international situation, teaching tolerance is of particular relevance. Currently, there is a contradiction between the tendencies towards globalization and the isolation of cultures, therefore, the problem of establishing intercultural ties and building an equal dialogue of cultures is acute. The aim of the research is to analyze the role of developing tolerance towards other cultures in preparation for intercultural interaction. In the research the author uses the method of analysis of scientific literature and diagnostic techniques. As a result of the experiment, the positive influence of the development of tolerance to other cultures on the preparation for intercultural interaction has been revealed. Thus, we can draw key conclusions that: preparation for intercultural interaction helps to overcome psychological barriers in learning a foreign language, promotes the disclosure of the student's personality, creates a healthy atmosphere in the student community and stimulates further learning; tolerance education should be more widely applied in educational institutions of various levels as the prevention of extremism in a tense intercultural environment.

The concept of “tolerance” has been thoroughly promoted within educational settings in light of the increasing need to foster co-existence and to nurture peaceful climates in societies. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Islamic education curriculum promotes the notion of tolerance as a core tenant across different grade levels. However, there is a gap in the literature investigating the approach and conceptualization of tolerance in UAE Islamic education curricula. This study employed qualitative content analysis of grade 10–12 textbooks to understand how the concept of tolerance is promoted and to identify the opportunities and gaps in teaching tolerance through these texts. The notion of tolerance in these texts was discussed through the themes of civic engagement, critical thinking, acceptance of multiplicity, justice and equity, protection from extremism, and compassion for humans. This study identified gaps in addressing tolerance and suggested other concepts that could further supplement the Islamic education program to more thoroughly address the notion of tolerance. This study argues that teaching tolerance through religious-based instruction may facilitate an exploration of effective tolerance inculcation approaches that provide insights into the field of tolerance education at large.
