The current study emphasizes on improving an interval type-2 fuzzy logic control (IT2FLC) system through the use of spiral dynamics algorithm (SDA) optimization in stabilizing a transformational two-wheeled wheelchair. The main contribution of this research is to reduce vibrations while performing the lifting and stabilization of a wheelchair from its standard four-wheeled to two-wheeled transformation. IT2FLC based SDA was used to enhance the system’s stability performance by obtaining the optimized value for input and output controller gains and IT2FLC parameters for IT2FLC. System modeling was done through development within the SimWise 4D software environment, which was then integrated with MATLAB/SIMULINK for control purposes. The proposed algorithm has demonstrated improved tilt angle performance with reduced noise and lower torque when various disturbances were applied, as compared to a system solely controlled by IT2FLC without any optimization. Moreover, the proposed algorithm has also comprehensively outperformed previous controllers in terms of system’s stability, further demonstrated its superiority as a system controller within transformational wheelchairs.

Design approach of an output feedback tracking controller is proposed for a class of high-order nonlinear systems with time delay. To deal with the time delays, an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii the tracking analysis is ingeniously constructed, and an output feedback tracking controller is designed by using a homogeneous domination method. It is shown that the proposed output controller independent of time delay can make the tracking error be adjusted to be sufficiently small and render all the trajectory of the closed-loop system as bounded. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The purpose of this paper is to present an observer-based control design with application to continuous bioreactors. For this purpose, phenomenological bioreactor models were represented by identified linear models plus unknown modelling error terms. Therefore, an uncertainty-based observer with a polynomial structure capable of estimating the unknown modelling error of the reactor representation is coupled to a linear input-output controller. The proposed methodology was evaluated in a sulphate reduction bioprocess and an acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation process for butanol (biofuel) production, under continuous regimes. Experimentally validated mathematical models were considered for this purpose. A theoretical framework is presented to demonstrate the corresponding closed-loop stability of the systems, and numerical simulations were carried out to corroborate the satisfactory performance of the proposed methodology.

This study deals with designing a decentralized multi-input multi-output controller board based on a low-cost microcontroller, which drives both parts of variable-speed scroll compressor and electronic-type expansion valve simultaneously in a chiller system. This study aims to show the applicability of commercial low-cost microcontroller to increase the efficiency of the chiller system, having variable-speed scroll compressor and electronic-type expansion valve with a new electronic card. Moreover, the refrigerant system proposed in this study provides the compactness, mobility, and flexibility, and also a decrease in the controller unit’s budget. The study was tested on a chiller system that consists of an air-cooled condenser, a variable-speed scroll compressor, and a stepper driven electronic-type expansion valve. The R134a was used as a refrigerant fluid and its flow was controlled by electronic-type expansion valve in this setup. Both variable-speed scroll compressor and electronic-type expansion valve were driven by the proposed hardware using either proportional integral derivative or fuzzy logic controller, which defines four distinct controller modes. The experimental results show that fuzzy logic controlled electronic-type expansion valve and proportional integral derivative controlled variable-speed scroll compressor mode give more robustness by considering the response time.

Active control techniques are a key factor in today’s aircraft developments to reduce structural loads and thereby enable highly efficient aircraft designs. Likewise, increasing the autonomy of aircraft systems aims to maintain the highest degree of operational performance also in fault scenarios. Motivated by these two aspects, this article describes the design and validation of a fault tolerant gust load alleviation control system on a flexible wing in a wind tunnel. The baseline gust load alleviation controller isolates and damps the weakly damped first wing bending mode. The mode isolation is performed via an H 2 -optimal blending of control inputs and measurement outputs, which allows for the design of a simple single-input single-output controller to actively damp the mode. To handle actuator faults, a control allocation scheme based on quadratic programming is implemented, which distributes the required control energy to the remaining available control surfaces. The control allocation is triggered in fault scenarios by a fault detection scheme developed to monitor the actuators using nullspace based filter design techniques. Finally, the fault tolerant control scheme is verified by wind tunnel experiments.
