Background: This study focuses on the representation of Syrian refugees in Canadian online news media. It examines 375 articles selected from three of the most visited Canadian news sites, namely the Toronto Star, which favours the Liberal Party, and the Toronto Sun and National Post, which favour the Conservative Party. Analysis: The basis of this research is a topoi analysis, whereby instances of the topos of burdening are identified, examined, and categorized as either positive or negative. Conclusion and implications: A distinction is drawn between the depiction of Syrian refugees in conservative- and liberal-leaning news sources. The findings aim to provide some insight into the possible impact of media representation on both the Syrian refugees and the Canadian public. The importance of local media is indisputable for media theorists and media practitioners, despite the widespread globalization. Although electronic media has the largest audience, while online media is constantly expanding, the traditional print media is still surviving and they influence the political and social life of local communities. “Narodne novine” [English: The People’s Newspaper] are a daily news and political newspaper with the longest publication time in south-eastern Serbia. By using the quantitative and qualitative content analysis, as well as the comparative and synthetic research method, the authors investigate how this newspaper has transformed in relation to genre, and in thematic and visual terms during the two socially and historically different periods - in the socialist and transitional period. The research corpus consists of 63 articles from two editions of “Narodne novine” – the newspapers published on May 1st 1949 (28 articles) and 70 years later, on May 1st 2019 (35 articles).

With a few exceptions, media visibility and representation of people with disabilities is scarce. It is biased and anchored in stigma, distorting their image and hindering their full social participation. Paralympic sport is one of the social fields where the challenge of an objective representation of disability becomes particularly important due to the ever-increasing amount of television attention to the Paralympic Games as a global sports event and some persisting stereotypes in media representation of athletes with disabilities. Through an exploratory and interpretive research method, aimed at assessing media visibility of disability from the perspective of content production and its dissemination, the paper reviews the evolution of media representation of the Paralympic Games and athletes with disabilities during Sochi 2014, Rio 2016, and PyeongChang 2018 global sports events in the daily news programs from the National Spanish Broadcaster, RTVE. The effective inclusion of people with disabilities in the public sphere and a progressive removal of stereotypes and stigma depends to a great extent on the visibility and objective representation of disability in media.

This article reports a meta-analysis of 345 published studies to examine the media’s role in construction of a Muslim and Islamic identity. A quantitative analysis highlights the geographical focus, methods, theories, authorship, media types, and time frames of published studies. A qualitative analysis investigated the most prominent researched themes. Our findings suggest that a large majority of studies covered Western countries, while Muslim countries and Muslim media have been neglected. We also identified an evident lack of comparative research, a neglect of visuals, and a dearth of research on online media. We found that most studies investigated the themes of ‘migration’, ‘terrorism’, and ‘war’. Moreover, our meta-study shows that Muslims tend to be negatively framed, while Islam is dominantly portrayed as a violent religion. Implications of these findings are discussed.

The article raises the problem of creating a theoretical basis for media representation of political leaders’ activities. To substantiate the relevance of the topic, the authors rely, on the one hand, on the importance of such media representation, and on the other hand, on the importance of modeling, a method that has proved to be the best way of cognition and construction of reality in modern science. Modeling makes it possible to make a sign model of the objects of reality. It helps to understand them and to find opportunities for their improvement. This process is extremely important for the development of political communication representation in the media. The authors characterize the essence of modeling as of a scientific method, its principles and algorithms; they highlight its main stages and procedures. They focus on the possibilities the modeling gives when studying political leadership and its media representation. The article gives a general description of this phenomenon, examines its theory, and draws attention to the importance of the synthetic leadership theory and the factors that determine the style of a political leader. The functions of a political leader and the structure of the activities necessary for the implementation of these functions are presented in detail. Political leader’s activity model is developed on these grounds. It includes the main components of the leader’s function, the types of the activities necessary to implement these functions, and the forms of work traditionally used in the practice of political leadership. The model is useful when studying media representation of some specific politicians. The authors suggest methods, as a research tool, that allow getting information about the content, structure and genre of the media presentations. The conclusions emphasize the importance of a journalist’s responsibility in working on a political media presentation, and consider the prospects the modeling has for improvement of media representation practice both in Russia and worldwide.

The present study aims at mapping how the situation of refuge and migration is represented metaphorically in the Brazilian online media. From the data collected, we will establish comparisons between the representations that were found. An approach that contemplates the frame study employed in the media allows us to observe that verbal and nonverbal resources, metaphorical sentences and lexical items are constituted into discursive frames. We intend to discuss how the migrant and the refugee are represented in the Brazilian online media. Some questions we will investigate are: What are the discourses on the reception of refugees and migrants? Which discourses on the integration of refugees and migrants are broadcasted? From these questions, we will examine how such categories compose the image of the migrant and the refugee. The corpus used was based on the news of the online newspaper Folha de São Paulo from June, 2015, seen as it was in this month that the so called “refugee crisis” occurred in Europe. The gathering and analysis were done with the help of two free softwares: Notepad++, that allows the user to save texts in txt format, and Antconc, that enables the analysis of several txt files through tools that are used in Corpus Linguistics. The concordance lines obtained by inserting a word of choice in AntConc’s concordancer were then analyzed manually through Cameron’s (2010) Metaphor-led Discourse Analysis. A larger objective will be to identify which metaphorical frames are used in the migrant’s and refugee’s media representation and what are their social implications. Such frames contribute to organize and potentialize the discourse about the Other (BRUNO, 2016).

The article investigates how the most popular Hungarian news websites represent Africa in order to highlight the tendencies and patterns used in their communication. It is hypothesized that Hungarian news websites operate with negative images when covering issues related to Africa due to the fact that news outlets tend to rely on foreign news sources, which – according to the available literature – mainly broadcast in a generalising and unfavourable manner. The content and sentiment analysis of news units led to the conclusion that even though the analysed Hungarian news websites do not solely use negative images – some topics, such as “Science and technology” and “Hungarian-African relations”, have a markedly positive tone to them – the online media representation of Africa is more negative in general.

Syntactic means of forming the image of a politician in the headlines of English-language newspapers on the material of the websites of the corresponding publications are considered in the article. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that in 2020—2021 online media acquired particular importance: in the conditions of isolation associated with the pandemic, many readers, instead of the printed version of the newspaper, began to read the online version, the design of which allows you to read the headline and lead without seeing the main text of the titled material. The question is raised about the order of words and the position of the leader’s sur-name in the sentence as a means of positioning the figure of a political leader. The results of a comparative analysis of the headlines of “The New York Times” and “The Washington Post” for the period January 20, 2009 — February 20, 2009, Jan-uary 20, 2017 — February 20, 2017, January 20, 2021 — February 20, 2021 are presented. These periods correspond to the first month in office of US President Barack Obama (2009], Donald Trump (2017) and Joseph Biden (2021]. It has been proven that news-papers use manipulative technologies in headlines, relying on the communicative role of the subject and its place in the structure of the sentence. In particular, the president supported by this media is positioned as an active politician and the main character, while the unsupported president is positioned as a secondary and inactive one.
