Abstract Terahertz (THz) technology is particularly suitable for non-destructive detection of porcelain sherd due to the unique properties of non-ionizing, high penetration, and broad-spectrum. In this paper, we investigated the reflection characteristics of the pigments and sediments for red and green porcelain sherd of Bayi kiln made in Shanxi province during the Jin Dynasty by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), obtaining the spectral responses of different components. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy was used as a complementary technique to complete the qualitative analysis of the pigments and sediments. In addition, the reflective THz imaging was performed to visualize the pigments and sediments in different regions of the porcelain sherd, realizing the visual detection of the pattern on the surface of porcelain sherd. These results show that THz-TDS and THz-imaging can serve as effective tools for the detection and analysis of ancient Chinese porcelain.

In the early fourth century CE, after the escalation of a series of succession disputes among the imperial Sima clan, the Jin dynasty collapsed and its capital city of Luoyang 洛陽 was destroyed. However, the end of the dynasty did not cause the Sima clan to fall from power entirely. Instead, the Jin dynasty was reestablished in the new capital of Jiankang 建康, the city known today as Nanjing. The earlier incarnation of the Jin would come to be known as the Western Jin dynasty, while the restored Jin dynasty is referred to as the Eastern Jin. The impact of this cataclysm on the inhabitants of Luoyang and the surrounding regions is difficult to quantify, and even harder to understand in more personal terms. We know that many of those who did not perish fled to the southeast, crossing the Yangzi River to resettle in the new capital. Later texts refer to this period as “The disorder of the Yongjia Reign” (Yongjia zhi luan 永嘉之亂). This epithet uses the imperial reign name given to the period between 307 and 313, even though the disasters did not neatly begin and end with those years. Although the Yongjia troubles are addressed throughout surviving historiographic material, there is no work of history dedicated to documenting the ensuing exodus from Luoyang to Jiankang.

Abstract: The article presents the publication and diverse interpretation of a fragment of a rare metal mirror from the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Tyva (Kyzyl city). The attribution of the composition, placed in the preserved part of the ornamental field of the mirror, required an appeal to the extensive collections of Chinese objects reflected in catalogs and special literature. It is established that the product belongs to a rare group of finds depicting the scene of the conversation “Xu Yu and Chao Fu” — a plot known since the Han Dynasty. An examination of the features of casting, the design of the rim, and the stylistics of the images of the published mirror shows that the manufacture of this item can be attributed to the period of the non-Chinese Jin Dynasty (1115–1234 AD). The significance of the fragment in the system of similar objects found on the territory of Tuva was determined by a review of known finds. The published fragment, the production of which dates back to the Jurchen time, demonstrates the latest period in the distribution of such objects in Tuva. It is important that the product shows a very rare specimen of a mirror, full analogies of which are absent not only in the designated region, but also, as far as we know, have not yet been identified in the sites of North and Central Asia. Keywords: metal mirror, Tuva, museum collections, China, Jurchen time, interpretation Acknowledgements: The study was carried out with the financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Ministry of Culture, Education, Science and Sports of Mongolia within the framework of the scientific project No. 19–59–44013 “Historical, Сultural and Ehnogenetic Processes in Mongolia during the Great Migration and the Early Middle Ages: an Interdisciplinary Analysis of Archaeological and Written Sources”.
