The present study adopts a corpus stylistic approach to: (1) examine a relationship between textual patterns of colour words in The Great Gatsby and their symbolic interpretations and (2) investigate the ways those patterns are handled in Thai translations. Distribution and co-occurrence patterns were analysed for colour words that are key in the novel: white, grey, yellow and lavender. The density and frequent patterns of each word are argued to foreground an association between the colour word and particular concepts, pointing to symbolic meaning potentials related to the novel’s themes of socioeconomic inequality and destructive wealth. The textual patterns are compared with what occurs in three Thai translations of the novel. While most of the colour images are directly translated, non-equivalents tend to be applied to figurative uses of the colour terms. This results in some changes in textual patterns of the colour words in the translated texts, which can in turn affect readers’ interpretations of colour symbolism in the novel.

Eating together is a culture that was born along with human civilization. Eating together becomes a symbol in both religious and cultural rituals. Christianity notes that eating together becomes a medium in spreading the gospel that Jesus and His disciples did. The symbolic meaning presented in the practice or culture of eating together is acceptance and fellowship. Acceptance is defined as a space to acknowledge the equality of fellow human beings, which creates a sense of solidarity. At the same time, the fellowship provides space to connect. In addition, eating together fulfills the body's physical needs for hunger and restores the freshness of the soul from fatigue. This article tries to connect symbols in eating together to present spirituality in viewing other creations, namely nature that has been damaged. Natural damage needs to be seen as a reality that must be faced and resolved t in the spirituality of eating together. Another creation is nature being the poor, oppressed, marginalized and sick. The solidarity presented in the moment of eating together becomes a new perspective in seeing the context of the destruction of nature and the awareness to build the disconnected interconnection of fellow creations.

Introduction. The article considers the variety and functions of dishes and utensils used at the sacrificial rituals of Trans-Kama “pagans” Udmurts from the Republic of Bashkortostan and Perm Krai. This is the first attempt of using extensive field and archival materials for the research purposes. Materials and Methods. The material for the study represents the published and archival sources, ethnographic information collected the authors during many years of field research. The analysis of materials was carried out using a comparative-historical method. The article takes into account the theoretical approaches of the semiotic school in ethnology. Results and Discussion. In the object world of Udmurt sacrifices, a special place is occupied by dishes and utensils. Without them the ritual process involving the preparation of food and a joint meal is impossible. Various dishes (cauldrons, troughs, buckets, bowls, spoons, ladles, etc.) are used for their utilitarian purpose (cooking, storage, transportation, eating food, etc.) but inclusion in the ritual process endows them with symbolic functions. Conclusion. Dishes and utensils used at the sacrifices of the Trans-Kama Udmurts are still endowed with a high sacred status. The number, composition and methods of using ritual utensils have remained traditional but their forms, material and manufacturing method have changed. As before, in addition to being used for utilitarian purposes they are endowed with many symbolic functions.

The study of the possibilities of using roses in park compositions «Sofiyivka» is based on the analysis of literary and archival sources. The study of the factual material makes it possible to assert that roses were represented in the park compositions of «Sofiyivka» throughout the history of its development. Currently, most of the compositions with roses are located in the new part of the park, beyond its historical core. At once, the function of compositions with the involvement of roses changed from decorative with a certain symbolic meaning, which is characteristic of sentimental and romantic parks, to exhibitional and decorative in combination with recreational, research and educational functions in our time.

Abstract A letter by the army contractor Eliezer Dileon to the community board of Minsk relating his audience with Tsar Alexander I of Russia in January 1817 sheds light on the significance of the performative dimension of Jewish intercession. In the perception of the intercessor, due to the personal encounter between the sovereign ruler and himself, the Jews in Russia constitute part of the political and societal fabric of the Empire, it sees them as ‘a people.’ The letter is one of the very few documents describing and confirming the symbolic meaning of an encounter between a monarch and a Jewish intercessor. It reflects on the reciprocal nature of negotiations between the state and the Jewish minority, the limitations in concrete outcomes notwithstanding.

The Japanese culinary tradition and contemporary food-related values are often characterised by an emotional and evocative tone that can be traced back to nostalgia, a global multidimensional phenomenon that blends cultural anxieties, sentimental values and sense of place. The desire to remember home through food consumption, as a valuable way of approaching the past, enables the construction or redefinition of ethnic identities, cultural boundaries and a sense of uniqueness. This paper offers some introductory reflections on present-day practices and affective aspects related to Japanese food culture from the point of view of their symbolic meaning in media narratives.
