TNI AD memiliki helikopter seri MI yang diproduksi di Rusia. Helikopter ini digunakan untuk kepentingan pengiriman logistik, pengantaran dan penjemputan anggota TNI AD yang bertugas di Indonesia bagian Timur, transportasi bagi orang-orang yang mengalami kecelakaan baik kecelakaan kerja maupun yang terkena musibah. Helikopter ini merupakan helikopter tercanggih di kelasnya karena bisa mengangkut pasien-pasien dalam posisi berbaring sebanyak 12 orang. Helikopter ini sangat membantu TNI AD dalam melaksanakan tugas-tugas yang berada di daerah-daerah terpencil khususnya daerah-daerah yang sulit dijangkau alat transportasi lain, seperti Papua. Semua keterangan yang terdapat baik di dalam helikopter maupun buku-buku manual ditulis dalam Bahasa Rusia. Oleh karena itu anggota TNI AD yang bekerja di bidang helikopter ini wajib mempelajari bahasa Rusia. Base camp helikopter ini terdapat di Semarang dan di Jakarta. Dengan demikian kesatuan yang menangani helikopter ini selalu mengirim para anggotanya untuk mempelajari bahasa Rusia. Pelatihan diadakan di pusat pendidikan yang bertempat di Cimahi. Peserta pelatihan sebanyak 12 orang yang terdiri dari 2 orang pilot  2 orang co-pilot, 6 orang teknisi, dan 2 orang dari bagian pemeriksa suku cadang. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan Grammar translation method, oral approach, lexical approach. Hasil yang diperoleh dari kegiatan ini adalah sebanyak 8 orang mampu berkomunikasi, menulis, serta membaca dan paham bahasa Rusia, 2 orang hanya mampu berkomunikasi secara terbata-bata dan membaca memahami teks  memerlukan waktu yang lebih lama, dan 2 orang lainnya tidak berhasil sama sekali.

There have always been different methods of teaching and learning of English language and throughout the years these methods have changed and improved. The Grammar Translation Method is one of the first and the main methods in teaching and learning of English language. This method enables the learning through the translation of various texts and the study of grammatical rules, which is its main activity. Moreover, in a class where Grammar Translation Method is used the target language is used less while the students are mainly taught in their national language, i.e. L1. Therefore, since this method was less effective in preparing the learners to use the target language communicatively, a new method was introduced. Thus, the Direct Method became used and popular among learners and teachers.

The topic of this research is The Effect of Grammar Translation Method in Descriptive Text for Students’ Writing Skill. The objective of this research were to find how the Grammar Translation Method can improve students’ writing skill through descriptive text for eleventh grade students at SMK Yapalis Krian in the academic year of 2019/2020 and whether the grammar translation method can be used as a method in improving the students’ achievement of writing skill. The researchers was applied pre-experimental research in this study. The steps of pre-experimental research were given test and treatment. In gathering the data, the researcher used a test in the form of writing content about descriptive text. The result of this research showed that using grammar translation method was good. It was proven by the improvement mean difference of pre-test and post-test after treatment. The means of the pre-test was 60.85, and the post-test was 74.63. Therefore, it can be suggessted that grammar translation method can be used as the alternative method in teaching which especially to improve writing skill.

<p class="15cKeywordsBInggris">Arabic teaching method that occurred until the end of the 19th century was dominated by the Grammar-Translation Method (Grammar-Translation Method) which prioritized rules, grammar and translation from a foreign language into the mother tongue or vice versa. To improve the quality of teaching Arabic, it is necessary to develop communicative skills as well as procedures for teaching language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), to provide comfort to students in Arabic lesson, and also to boost student achievement, therefore in learning Arabic requires creative methods to be used during the learning process. In the process of this research, the writer first uses the library research method combined with the descriptive method. To improve Arabic achievement, students need creative methods to support learning success. As for the Arabic achievement, it means how students can masters four language skills which include being proficient in listening, speaking, reading and writing. To master four language skills, STIQ Zad Al Insaniyah uses the al intiqoiyah method. The creative Arabic learning method to improve language achievement with the al intiqoiyah method so that it is able to adopt all the good sides of various methods to suit the material being taught.</p><p class="16aJudulAbstrak"><strong>Abstrak          </strong>                        </p><p class="16bIsiAbstrak">Pengajaran bahasa Arab yang terjadi sampai akhir abad ke 19 didominasi oleh metode Gramatika-Tarjemahan (Grammer-Translation Method) yang mengutamakan kaidah-kaidah, tata bahasa dan penerjemahan dari bahasa asing ke bahasa ibu atau sebaliknya. Untuk meningkatkan mutu pengajaran bahasa Arab perlu adanya pengembangan kemampuan komunikatif serta prosedur pengajaran keterampilan berbahasa (mendengar, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis), untuk memberikan kenyamanan kepada para siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Arab, dan juga untuk mendongkrak prestasi siswa, oleh karena itu dalam pembelajaran bahasa Arab membutuhkan metode kreatif untuk dipakai pada saat proses pembelajaran berlangsung. Dalam proses penelitian ini, pertama penulis menggunakan metode studi pustaka (library research) yang dipadukan dengan metode deskriptif. Untuk meningkatkan prestasi bahasa Arab peserta didik memerlukan metode yang kreatif untuk menunjang keberhasilan pembelajaran. Adapaun prestasi bahasa Arab yang dimaksudkan adalah bagaimana peserta didik dapat menguasai empat kecakapan bahasa yang meliputi cakap dalam menyimak, berbicara, membaca dan menulis. Untuk menguasai empat kecakapan bahasa, di STIQ Zad Al Insaniyah dengan menggunakan metode al intiqoiyah. Metode pembelajaran bahasa Arab kreatif untuk meningkatkan prestasi bahasa adalah dengan menggunakan metode al intiqoiyah sehingga mampu mengadopsi semua sisi baik dari beragam metode untuk menyesuaikandengan materi yang diajarkan </p>

English is the first foreign language in Indonesia which is considered important in transferring and developing science and technology, arts and building the relationship among countries. Based on the 1994 basic course outline, the purpose of English teaching at Technical Senior High Schools is to develop the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The teaching of those four language skills can be done in integrative way in which the emphasis is on developing the students’ reading skill. The less attention to a certain language skill may cause the students’ unbalanced mastery of English. However, teaching reading using certain method like grammar-translation method is also important because by it students will be able to understand the English text, grammar and structure and translation well through which they will be a means of improving other skills such as speaking. From the reasons, the researcher wants to study about The Use of Grammar-Translation Method to Teach reading to the Tenth Class Students at SMK YPM 12 Tuban Academic Year 2020/2021. This title is chosen because he is sure that reading is also important besides speaking, writing and listening.   This study is in form of descriptive analysis which means that he describes what he finds in the real life and he reveals them to prove the rightness of his assumption. He tries to find the data and process them and just describes his finding. He analyzes and describes about the use of grammar-translation method in teaching reading and the problems the teacher and students face in the process of teaching and learning. Besides them, it is also prominent to tell the process or activities in the teaching of reading using grammar-translation method. It is hoped that some alternatives to solve these problems can be found. Therefore it is expected that this study will be useful for English teacher as the alternative method to teach reading, for the readers to add their knowledge about different ways in teaching reading and for the students in general to be the reference to add their knowledge and to do further research.

In language teaching and learning, several methods are used for the effectiveness of teaching and learning activity. The researcher implemented the methods to assist the teacher in teaching the language, time after time. The methods have undergone many changes and development based on the attitude and school of thought for teaching and learning a language, so each method has a different character, technique, and implementation. This reflection will expand on the grammatical translation method (GTM) used in the nineteenth century to teach English as a foreign language. This method is based on the goal of grammatical competence. To achieve the goal, this method has several characteristic and technique which will be used in its implementation. The writer attempts to do a review by investigating 5 published articles gathered from internet websites to show the use of the grammar-translation method, its effectiveness, and why it is criticized for teaching and learning English as a foreign language. The writer’s reflection is included too.
