The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of bird species in the area of ​​the former coal mine of PT. Pilar Putra Sejati, Loa Bakung Village, Sungai Kunjang District, Samarinda.This research has been carried out for approximately three months starting from May 2021 to September 2021. The method used for observing birds is a direct method using traps or traps in the form of fog nets and traps or snares, where observations are made at six points , as follows; three points on the edge of the dug hole and three points located on trees frequented by birds. At each point, observations were held in the morning at 06.00-08.00 and in the afternoon at 16.00-18.00 WITA.The results of observations at the research location found as many as 9 species of birds from 6 families. Bird species during the study were Lonchura punctulata (Ploceidae family), Passer montanus (Ploceidae family), Streptopelia chinensis (Colombidae family), Giopelia striata (Colombidae family), Arborophila charltonii (Phasianidae family), Phynonotus aurigaster (nis family), Aenicurus family Rallidae), Acridotheres javanicus (family Sturnidae), and Lonchura fuscans (family Ploceidae).

Abstract Gumuk is one of the important ecosystems in bird conservation in Jember Regency. Currently, many gumuk ecosystems are being degraded, and very rapid land-use change that threatens the preservation and conservation of birds. This study aims to determine the diversity of birds around the gumuk as an effort to explain the important role of the gumuk as a bird habitat. The research was conducted in January-February 2021 in Ledokombo District, Jember Regency. Bird observation method using Point Count method, observation time is in the morning (06.00-08.00 WIB) and afternoon (15.00-17.00 WIB). The results showed that there were 33 species of birds from 20 families. The families of Campephagidae and Estrildidae show the families with the most species found. The level of diversity shows the moderate category (H'=2.253). Species with the highest abundance were Collocalia linchi (31.264%), and the lowest were Amandava amandava, Dicaeum concolor, Geopelia striata, Passer montanus, and Ardeola speciosa (0.044%). Evenness index (E) shows the condition of stable species distribution with a value of 0.644.

Abstract Ten species of the louse genus Myrsidea belonging to the “serini-species-group” have been reviewed. A redescription of Myrsidea quadrifasciata (Piaget, 1880), the earliest described and valid species of this species complex, is given and a neotype for this species is designated. Nine new junior synonymies of M. quadrifasciata are proposed and discussed. The new synonyms and their respective type hosts are: Myrsidea anoxanthi Price and Dalgleish, 2007 from Loxipasser anoxanthus (Gosse, 1847), Myrsidea argentina (Kellogg, 1906) from Spinus magellanicus (Vieillot, 1805), Myrsidea balati Macháček, 1977 from Passer montanus (Linnaeus, 1758), Myrsidea darwini Palma and Price, 2010 from Geospiza fuliginosa Gould, 1837, Myrsidea major (Piaget, 1880) from Plectrophenax nivalis (Linnaeus, 1758), Myrsidea serini (Séguy, 1944) from Serinus serinus (Linnaeus, 1766), Myrsidea queleae Tendeiro, 1964 from Quelea quelea lathami (Smith, A., 1836), Myrsidea textoris Klockenhoff, 1984 from Ploceus cucullatus cucullatus (Müller, 1776), and Myrsidea viduae Tendeiro, 1993 from Vidua macroura (Pallas, 1764). Intraspecific morphometric variability, relative genetic divergence (based on a 379 bp portion of the mitochondrial COI gene and a 347 bp portion of the nuclear EF-1α gene), geographical distribution, and host associations, including 8 new host records for these lice, are discussed. Taking into consideration these parameters we suggest that the only way to deal with these taxa is to follow concept of subspecies with the following taxa and their geographic distributon: Palearctic Region: M. q. quadrifasciata and M. q. serini, Neotropical Region: M. q. anoxanthi, M. q. argentina, M. q. darwini, Paleotropic Region: M. q. queleae, M. q. textoris and M. q. viduae.

AbstractUrbanization constitutes one of the major transformations of natural habitats, creating new areas characterized by multiple potential wildlife stressors. Birds that live in highly anthropized zones are confronted with physiological and behavioural challenges caused by these stressors. Here, we investigated if several health parameters differed between three subpopulations of tree sparrow nestlings subjected to different levels of anthropogenic pollution, and particularly noise pollution: a quiet rural area, a noisy rural area adjacent to an airport and a heavily urbanized area. We compared body condition, oxidative stress markers and baseline corticosterone levels, expecting urban nestlings to be in overall worse condition as compared to rural (rural and rural airport) birds. In addition, we expected nestlings exposed to aircraft noise to show intermediate stress levels. We found that rural-airport nestlings had the highest levels of antioxidant capacity of plasma and did not differ from rural counterparts in the rest of the parameters. By contrast, urban nestlings were in slightly worse body condition and had lower antioxidant capacity than rural and rural-airport individuals. Our results suggest that aircraft noise does not constitute a significant stressor for nestlings. In contrast, urban conditions constitute a more challenging situation, negatively impacting different physiological systems. Although nestlings seem able to buffer these challenges in the short-term, further research should explore the long-term potential consequences of early exposure to these conditions.

Abstrak Eksistensi Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH) yang di wilayah Kota Malang mulai menurun, ini dikarenakan proses pembangunan yang intensif. Tempat Pemakaman Umum (TPU) ialah salah satu RTH yang berfungsi lain yaitu sebagai kawasan resapan air, penghasil biomasa serta karbon terbanyak, dan habitat binatang liar contohnya burung. Penelitian kelimpahan burung diurnal dilaksanakan pada bulan September sampai bulan November 2020 di 3 TPU ialah (TPU Kasin, TPU Samaan, dan TPU Sukun). Metode perhitungan burung mengunakan IPA (Index Point of Abundance) dan Point Count. Identifikasi memakai buku “panduan lapangan burung-burung di Sumatra, Jawa, Bali, Kalimantan”. Hasil pengamatan burung diurnal di 3 lokasi TPU terdapat 11 famili, 15 spesies, 267 individu. Indeks keanekaragaman Shanon-Wiener di TPU Sukun, Kasin, dan Samaan terletak pada tingkatan keanekaragaman yang terkategori sedang (H’=1.5 – 3.5). Tingkatan kemerataan spesies dari ketiga TPU ialah (E>0.6) terkategori tinggi, sebaliknya nilai indeks kekayaan jenisnya (R<3.5) ialah terkategori rendah. Burung sriti (Hirundo tahitica) serta burung gereja (Passer montanus) populasinya lebih besar dibanding spesies yang lainnya. Kesesuaian lahan serta tingkatan gangguan dari penduduk kota terhadap burung disebagian areal TPU, mengakibatkan sebagian spesies burung tertentu yang bisa bertahan hidup dengan lingkungannya. Pengelolaan sumberdaya alam secara optimal mampu meningkatkan mutu kawasan lahan tersebut. Public cemetery is kind of green area which has function as drainage, and wild animal habitat like birds, and also produce Biomasa and amount of carbon. Research on diurnal bird abundance was carried out from September to November 2020 on 3 Public cemeteries (Kasin Public cemetery, Samaan Public cemetery, and Sukun Public cemetery). The bird abundance calculation method uses IPA (Index Point of Abundance) and Point Count. Process of identification by using panduan lapangan burung-burung di Sumatra, Jawa, Bali, Kalimantan’s book. The results of diurnal bird observations at 3 Public cemeteries are contained 11 families, 15 species, 267 individuals. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index in Sukun, Kasin, and Samaan Public cemeteries lies at the level of diversity which is categorized as medium (H '= 1.5 - 3.5). The level of evenness of the species of the three Public cemeteries are (E> 0.6) in the high category, on the other hand, the index value of species richness (R <3.5) is the low category. Sriti birds (Hirundo tahitica) and sparrows (Passer montanus) have a larger population than other species. The land suitability and the disturbance level from urban residents to birds in parts of the Public cemeteries are resulted only certain bird species that able to survive in their environment. Abstract The significance of colour signals in species with strong sexual dimorphism and/or elaborated visual ornaments is rather well-understood. Less attention has, however, been devoted to study colour signals in species with weak or no apparent sexual dimorphism. In such species, an interesting possibility arises as both sexes can bear the same colour ornament(s) (i.e. sexes are mutually ornamented), but their signalling value might differ in males and females. We aimed to explore this possibility by investigating the phenotypic correlates of the black bib, a melanin-based plumage ornament, in the Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus). More specifically, we studied the sex-dependent relationships between bib size and three aspects of individuals’ phenotype: body condition (i.e. size-corrected body mass), physiology (i.e. cellular innate immunity/inflammation status, expressed through total leucocyte counts, and chronic physiological stress, expressed through the ratio of heterophils to lymphocytes) and individual personality (i.e. activity in a novel environment). We found that bib size was not associated with body condition and cellular innate immunity/inflammation status, but was positively related to physiological stress levels independent of sex. Furthermore, bib size was negatively associated with activity in males but positively in females. Our findings bring important correlative evidence that mutual ornamental traits may have sex-specific signalling value. Significance statement The signalling role of elaborated colourful ornaments, that are usually possessed only by males in sexually dimorphic species, is well-established. The function of various colour traits which are borne by both sexes (i.e. mutual ornaments), however, is less obvious. Do they have a signalling value in both sexes? If yes, do they signal the same information in males and females? Or, most intriguingly, can they convey different information in the two sexes? To test these alternatives, we studied the signalling value of the black bib, a melanin-based mutual plumage ornament, in Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus). Apart from being correlated with chronic stress in both sexes, bib size was positively related to activity in females but negatively in males. Our results suggest that the information content of the same colour trait in males and females can be different in mutually ornamented species.
