Abstract Oriented thin films of β-(Ga1-xFex)2O3 have been deposited by RF magnetron sputtering on c-Al2O3 and GaN substrates. The itinerant character of Fe 3d states forming the top of the valence band (VB) of Fe substituted of β-Ga2O3 thin films has been determined from resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES). Further, admixture of itinerant and localized character of these Fe 3d sates is obtained for larger binding energies i.e deeper of VB. The bottom of the conduction band (CB) for β-(Ga1-xFex)2O3 is also found to be strongly hybridized states involving Fe 3d and O 2p states as compared to that of Ga 4s in pristine β-Ga2O3. This suggests that β-Ga2O3 transforms from band like system to a charge transfer system with Fe substitution. Furthermore, the bandgap red shits with Fe composition, which has been found to be primarily related to the shift of the CB edge.

AbstractTime-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with attosecond precision provides new insights into the photoelectric effect and gives information about the timing of photoemission from different electronic states within the electronic band structure of solids. Electron transport, scattering phenomena and electron-electron correlation effects can be observed on attosecond time scales by timing photoemission from valence band states against that from core states. However, accessing intraband effects was so far particularly challenging due to the simultaneous requirements on energy, momentum and time resolution. Here we report on an experiment utilizing intracavity generated attosecond pulse trains to meet these demands at high flux and high photon energies to measure intraband delays between sp- and d-band states in the valence band photoemission from tungsten and investigate final-state effects in resonant photoemission.

AbstractSince the discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in the magnetically doped topological insulators (MTI) Cr:(Bi,Sb)2Te3 and V:(Bi,Sb)2Te3, the search for the magnetic coupling mechanisms underlying the onset of ferromagnetism has been a central issue, and a variety of different scenarios have been put forward. By combining resonant photoemission, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and density functional theory, we determine the local electronic and magnetic configurations of V and Cr impurities in (Bi,Sb)2Te3. State-of-the-art first-principles calculations find pronounced differences in their 3d densities of states, and show how these impurity states mediate characteristic short-range pd exchange interactions, whose strength sensitively varies with the position of the 3d states relative to the Fermi level. Measurements on films with varying host stoichiometry support this trend. Our results explain, in an unified picture, the origins of the observed magnetic properties, and establish the essential role of impurity-state-mediated exchange interactions in the magnetism of MTI.

The VO2 is a 3d1 electron system that undergoes a reversible metal–insulator transition (MIT) triggered by temperature and characterized by an interplay between orbital, charge and lattice degrees of freedom. The characterization of the MIT features are therefore extremely challenging and powerful investigation tools are required. In this work, we demonstrate how a combination of resonant photoemission and constant initial state (CIS) spectroscopy can be used as an orbital selective probe of the MIT studying three different VO2/TiO2(001) strained films. The CIS spectra of the V 3d and V 3p photo-electrons shows sensitivity to different orbital contribution and the presence of a spin polarized band close to the Fermi level.
