This paper illustrates the importance of moving beyond an economic focus, and towards an emotional one, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of why farmers can be reluctant to retire and/or pass their farm onto the next generation. We report on a two-phase qualitative study of family farm decision-making processes in Northern Ireland, drawing on 62 in-depth oral life history interviews with farmers, farmers’ spouses, and farm successors. In an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional aspects of retirement and succession decision-making processes, and their relationship with place belonging, in the first phase of this research we employed an innovative ‘Work and Talk’ method, whereby interviews were conducted while shadowing, or in some cases, co-working, with farmers on their land. The second phase of this research responded to restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, and involved remote telephone or online interviews with family farm members. This research revealed the complex relationships between a ‘longing for belonging’ and emotional attachment to the family farm, and the challenges associated with patrilineal farming structures, expectations and identities, in planning for succession. The emotional impacts of strained relationships with policy makers around support for retirement emerged as a surprisingly dominant theme throughout the interview process, suggesting the need for greater emphasis on the emotional aspects of farming retirement and succession planning to inform future rural development policies targeted towards the sustainability of family farms.

This article aims to present Physical Education implications for teaching in the context of the socio-educational measure of deprivation of liberty at Fundação Centro de Atendimento Socioeducativo ao Adolescente, an institution responsible for carrying out an internment measure in the State of São Paulo. It uses literature review, observation and interviews based on oral life history. As a result, it was possible to identify approximations and distances between two existing proposals in Physical Education. It urges the need for a dialogue between two state spheres so that Physical Education is thought out in order to meet the specificities of young people in conflict with the law, as well as making the school educational proposal and the inclusion of the theme in the teachers’ training curricula possible and coherent.

Objective: to describe the perception of the patient undergoing larval therapy. Method: qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study, using oral history as a data collection technique and methodological framework, in the form of oral life history. Six patients with difficult-to-heal wounds participated in the study, followed by the dressing committee of a teaching hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, undergoing larval therapy. Results: the testimonies of the patients/collaborators point to various values, such as belief, fear, acceptance, improvement of the wound and pain. They revealed that there is no major objection and that clarification regarding the treatment instituted proved to be important in the acceptance decision. Conclusion: the feelings expressed by the patients, such as improvement of the wound, reduction of pain and odor, optimization of the healing process, emergence of sparks of hope regarding the return to their life, among others, translate the benefits of Larval Therapy (LT). Despite the seizure caused by the animal’s movement over the affected area and the disgust it causes to some professionals and people, LT was considered wonderful, especially for its effectiveness in cleaning the wound without the need for new invasive procedures such as cutting and surgical debridement.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the social attributes of masculinity that incite the practice of conjugal violence. Method: Oral Life History was used as a methodological reference. Interviews were conducted with 13 men facing criminal proceedings for conjugal violence linked to the 2nd Vara De Justiça pela Paz Em Casa (2nd Court of Justice for Peace at Home), in the municipality of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, in April and July 2018. The data were organized according to thematic content analysis and interpreted in the light of the theoretical framework on gender. Results: Male orality reveals that the engagement in conjugal violence was related to the following constructs of masculinity: dominance over women, role as head of the family, family provider, and exacerbated sexuality. Final Considerations: Considering that some social attributes of masculinity give rise to engagement in conjugal violence, it is necessary to create spaces for reflection on how they are compromising.

Objective: To communicate life stories of people who suffer from acquired immunodeficiency-syndrome with a higher vulnerability registered at the Municipal Secretary of Social Assistance and the diagnostic’s influence on their daily routine. Method: Descriptive and exploratory study based on oral life history. Thirteen people with AIDs took part in the study via a semi-structured interview. The narratives were analyzed using Bardin’s thematic content analysis. Results: Three thematic axes emerged from Bardin’s content analysis: prejudice and discrimination regarding the life routine with aids; Reaction when facing the diagnostic and the adhesion process for the antiretroviral treatment; Confrontation of religion and religiousness on people with aids. Conclusion: The people living with aids, a chronic and stigmatizing disease, need the support of multidisciplinary teams and an improvement in relation to the access, the coverage and the meaning assigned to the disease, besides a better quality of life and social assistance. We conclude that religion did not contribute to facing these people’s conditions. It brought blame, incorrect information that may impair the treatment and their follow-up. One infers that health education regarding HIV/AIDS needs to be remodeled on all of society’s segments.
