Quality of experience (QoE) when accessing video streaming becomes a challenge in varieties of network bandwidth/speed. Adaptive streaming becomes an answer to gain good QoE. An architecture system of the adaptive streaming server with Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) was proposed. The system was consists of two services e.g transcoding and streaming. Transcoding service encodes an audio file, multi-bitrates video files, and manifest.mpd files. Streaming service serves client streaming requests that appropriate to client network profiles. The system is built using the Golang programming environment and FFMPEG. Transcoding service has some execution mode (serial and concurrent) and passing mode (1 pass and 2 passes). The transcoding service test results show that concurrent execution is faster 11,5% than the serial execution and transcoding using 1 pass is faster 46,95% than 2 passes but the bitrate of output video lower than the determinate bitrate parameter.  The streaming service has a good QoE. In the 5 scenarios, buffer level=0 happens 5 times, and its total duration is 64 seconds. Buffer level=0 happens when extreme changes happen in network speed from fast to too slow.

The study investigates the nature and degree of influence of the range of application usability variables on the learning experience of the students at a specific institution of higher education institution in Oman. The study was carried out via eDify implementation encompassing the usability variables and learning experience of the students. Literature does little to suggest the aforementioned relationship in the context of the Omani higher education. The current study would reveal the variables that are critical to effective technology-based learning of the students. The implications generated through the study would allow the institution involved in the study to effectively implement the variables required for enhanced teaching and learning. The methodology used in the study is divided into an exploratory and the main research. Principal component analysis and a range of regression analyses are conducted to test the relationships between the independent and the dependent variable, “learning experience”. Results suggest that the usability variables have both positive and significant effects on the dependent variable of the learning experience. One usability variable that stands out more than others is the usage of mobile media.

In this thesis, we considered the effect of the content delivery network architecture on the popular short video sharing websites such as YouTube. The high number of users demanding videos impacts YouTube scalability which requires a new content delivery structure. Considering the high performance of P2P overlay networks, we propose an efficient peer-to-peer based system for short video sharing in the Internet in which all participant peers are responsible to distribute video replicas they have stored. This system comprises of a BitTorrent like network and a central media streaming server. To proficiently utilize P2P in our system, we propose some important approaches including an efficient and reliable indexing scheme, an efficient downloading strategy, a reliable content distribution mechanism, and a fairness policy. The simulations results demonstrate that the proposed system significantly increases client peers download speed while reduces the server workload and the startup delay for an improved playback quality.

Video streaming application such as Youtube is one of the most popular mobile applications. To adjust the quality of video for available network bandwidth, a streaming server provides multiple representations of video of which bit rate has different bandwidth requirements. A streaming client utilizes an adaptive bit rate (ABR) scheme to select a proper representation that the network can support. However, in mobile environments, incorrect decisions of an ABR scheme often cause playback stalls that significantly degrade the quality of user experience, which can easily happen due to network dynamics. In this work, we propose a control theory (Linear Quadratic Optimization)-based ABR scheme to enhance the quality of experience in mobile video streaming. Our simulation study shows that our proposed ABR scheme successfully mitigates and shortens playback stalls while preserving the similar quality of streaming video compared to the state-of-the-art ABR schemes.

The technology space of the University of Denver Libraries to manage digital collections and institutional resources isn’t relegated to one department on campus – rather, it distributed across a network of collaborators with the skills and expertise to provide that support. The infrastructure, which is comprised of an archival metadata management system (Archivespace), a digital repository (Node.js + ElasticSearch), preservation storage (ArchivesDirect), and a streaming server (Kaltura) is independently but cooperatively managed across IT, library departments and vendors. The coordinated effort of digital curation activities still allows each group to focus on the service they have the most vested interest in providing. This paper will talk about the different management and development practices involved in developing our integrated infrastructure to provide digital collections as a service.

Background The trend of quick evolution and increased digital data in today’s operating rooms (ORs) has led to the construction of hybrid ORs. There is often a main control room with monitors for integrating intraoperative data from multiple devices in the hybrid OR. However, there is no adequate solution for communicating the data with people outside the OR. Objective The objective of this study was to design an intelligent operating room (iOR) system, augmented onto the existing information technology (IT) infrastructure of hybrid ORs, to stream surgery performance and intraoperative imaging data. Methods In this study, an all-in-one device with synergetic encoder and decoder was used. The device was able to stream multiple sources to one display. The lossless video and images from specific surgical workflows were streamed outside the hybrid OR through network protocols and were further managed by a streaming server and wireless control system. The steps of this study included the following: (1) defining the requirements and feasibility of an iOR system in the hybrid OR, (2) connecting multiple sources, (3) setting up equipment across the hybrid OR and a conference room, (4) designing a video management system, and (5) real-time streaming under specific surgical workflows. Results The wired streamed video was shown simultaneously on the display in the hybrid OR and the display in the conference room with near-zero latency. Additionally, an interactive video between the hybrid OR and the conference room was achieved through the bidirectional wireless control system. The functions of recording, archiving, and playback were successfully provided by the streaming server. The readily available hardware components and open-access programming reduced the cost required to construct this streaming system. Conclusions This flexible and cost-effective iOR system not only provided educational benefits, but also contributed to surgical telementoring.
