Exporting is a central growth strategy for most firms and managers with international experience are instrumental for export decisions. We suggest that such managers can be hired from Multinational Corporations (MNCs). We integrate theory from strategic human capital research into models explaining export decisions. We theorize that hiring managers from MNCs increases the odds of domestic firms to start exporting and this effect depends on the similarities between hiring firms and MNCs. We hypothesize that young firms will benefit comparatively less from hiring MNC managers. In contrast, firms with internationally diverse workforces and with high degrees of hierarchical specialization will benefit the most from hiring MNC managers. We test and support these hypotheses for 474,926 domestic firms in Sweden, which we observe between 2007 and 2015.

This symposium provides a complementary set of papers exploring frameworks and models for developing artificial social intelligence (ASI) for teams. ASI consists of components of social cognition that support teamwork and more general interpersonal interactions. Although AI is rapidly evolving and fielded in a variety of operational settings, the implementation of such systems is vastly outpacing our ability to understand how to design and develop technologies appropriately. This symposium is meant to help redress this gap. Consisting of scholars representing the cognitive, computational, and organizational sciences, the papers discuss how they integrate theory and methods to inform development of agents capable of complex collaborative processes. Collectively, these papers synthesize perspectives across disciplines in support of an interdisciplinary research approach for ASL The goal is to contribute to research and development in the area of Human- AI- Robot Teaming effectiveness.

Protest event data are both undertheorized and riddled with inconsistencies and errors. We call for modifying standard practices in the collection and construction of protest event data from electronic archives of news sources to both improve verifiability of data and integrate theory with data construction. The key change is a relational data structure that maintains strong links between events identified by coders and the underlying textual sources. This allows study of the relation between events and news coverage of those events. An additional change is to record data on the relations among events, including both recognition of complex events involving multiple actors, dates, action forms, or locations and explicit acknowledgement of the connection of events to specific protest campaigns or episodes of contention. We present preliminary illustrative data about Black protests from these new procedures to demonstrate the value of this approach. NOTE: This is a working paper. Comments and feedback are appreciated.

Abstract Background In 2019, our nursing school shifted clinical instruction from the traditional model to the Dedicated Educational Unit (DEU). Objectives To evaluate the DEU learning atmosphere, instruction quality, clinical instructor’s performance and students’ grades. Methods A sample of 45 nursing students completed the CLES-T; 10 of them participated in a focus group. Students’ grades in the DEU and traditional models were compared. Results Students (77.6%) ranked the DEU outcomes as “good”-“excellent;” “nursing care on the unit” and the “clinical faculty’s ability to integrate theory and practice” were the highest and lowest ranked categories, respectively. The focus group revealed dichotomous opinions regarding the unit atmosphere and the professional performance of the nurse manager and staff. Students in the DEU framework attained higher grades than did their counterparts. Conclusions Clinical instructors need specific training; the clinical staff and nurse managers should be informed about the unit atmosphere’s impact on students’ future professional decisions.

A significant challenge for the development of artificial social intelligence for effective human-machine teams is defining the forms of artificial knowledge structures needed for machine agents to meaningfully engage in collaboration. Relevant to this, individual and shared knowledge structure concepts have been proposed across a variety of disciplines, resulting in a lack of conceptual clarity and impeding their operationalization for human-machine teaming. To reconcile conceptual differences across disciplines and enable the emergence of complex socio-cognitive abilities in machine agents, research is needed to integrate theory on the knowledge structures that underpin complex cognition. Toward this end, we survey research from the cognitive and computational sciences to develop a framework for the systematic application and evaluation of knowledge structure concepts for machine agents in teams. Our approach focuses on contextual factors, specifically the task environment structure and the situation temporality, that can help guide knowledge structure requirements for artificial social intelligence.

LKP3A counselor in terms of quality and quantity is still very lacking. One of the indications is there are still many unskillful bachelor degree graduates that work as counselors. Thus, there is a need for assistance and empowerment to meet the needs of the community. This community empowerment program aims to improve knowledge and counseling skills that are still relatively minimal for mentors at LKP3A Fatayat Nadhalatul Ulama Pekalongan. This research is a participatory action research (PAR) with a qualitative approach. This research was carried out for 1 year in the NU building in Pekalongan. The subjects of this study were divided into two community categories namely the Core Trainer Team (TIP) and LKP3A Women's Citizens (WP). Counseling skills training is carried out through three activities, namely planning, implementation, and evaluation monitoring activities. The results of this research show that after LKP3A counselors received training and mentoring, it showed many changes, including being able to understand ethical principles for counseling and paying attention to risk management; able to bring up a friendly attitude; empathize; want to listen to clients; understand and appreciate individual differences. The counselor provides services based on these differences. The focus on the client is greater. The counselor understands her position as a counselor, able to integrate theory into counseling practice, able to evaluate the course of counseling both in the process and results.
