This article aims to improve the toughness of pre-packaged grouts (PPG) by incorporating crumb rubber. The mechanism for toughness of PPG with crumb rubber was analyzed based on the uniaxial compression model. Crumb rubber with surfaces treated by different methods (NaOH solutions or microwave treatment) was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of mesh sizes, amounts, surface-treated methods of crumb rubber, and mixing procedures on the PPG’s mechanical strength and rheological properties were investigated. The results showed that, firstly, the addition of crumb rubber improves the PPG’s toughness, while its mechanical strength is reduced. Adding NaOH solutions or microwave-treated crumb rubber into PPG can weaken the negative effects of crumb rubber on the PPG’s mechanical strength; however, this function is limited. Secondly, the crumb rubber grouts’ rheological properties can be fully exploited by increasing the stirring rate and time so that the fluidity of crumb rubber grouts is improved, which fulfils the characteristics of no bleeding and micro-expansion. Finally, the optimal formula and mixing technique of crumb rubber grouts were proposed in this paper. The results of this paper can provide a significant reference for the application of scrap tires.

In this paper, the advantage of reusing scrap tires in Scrap Rubber Block (SRB) to improve thermal insulation in buildings was examined experimentally. By testing the use of SRB in black and white colours as external wall insulators and comparing their performance with walls without insulation. The results indicated that a wall with scrap tire blocks gave the best thermal insulation results when the outer face was painted white. The decrement factor (f) and the rate of heat loss increase, while the rate of heat gain decreases. This was done through the mechanisms of heat transfer by conduction through the layers of the wall and the effect of adding the rubber block on its thermal properties. The results showed that the use of rubber blocks reduces the temperature of the inner surface of the wall by 3-4oC lower than the traditional wall. The thermal diffusion inside the wall was determined effectively in the case of a wall with the rubber block, where the temperature of the inner surface reaches its maximum value by about 0.5-hour difference from the traditional wall in the case of the wall with the rubber block in black colour, and 9.5-hour in the case with the white block.

At least 275 million scrap tires exist in stockpiles in the U.S. The practice of dumping scrap tires in landfills has been an environmental concern. To address this concern, many industries—and regional and national environmental protection agencies—have taken major initiatives to recycle scrap tires. One of the major uses of recycled scrap tires is in crumb rubber products, including rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt is produced by blending ground tire rubber with asphalt to beneficially modify its properties for highway construction. The ground tire rubber (GTR) can be used either as part of the asphalt rubber binder (also known as asphalt rubber), seal coat, cap seal spray, joint and crack sealant or as substitute aggregate (rubber-modified asphalt concrete). Therefore, the largest single market for GTR is asphalt rubber, which consumes approximately 12 million tires, annually. Currently, several Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in the U.S. do not allow use of GTR in asphalt mixes. This is partly due to lack of information, laboratory test data and specifications or special provisions on the use of GTR in asphalt pavements. The current study was undertaken to summarize the available wealth of knowledge, identify research needs, and document the major findings of previous pertinent studies focused on GTR use in asphalt. Significant study findings—consisting of laboratory test results, field observations, and common practices—were documented, including: the use of GTR in asphalt mixes, wet and dry processes, characterization of hot mix asphalt (HMA) containing GTR and GTR performance when combined with virgin materials. In order to promote successful use of GTR, it is imperative to help DOTs develop specifications/special provisions for utilizing rubberized asphalt by collecting data, common practices and specifications utilized by other state DOTs. As a part of this effort, we conducted a survey of construction specifications used by different DOTs that currently allow the use of GTR in asphalt. Since some DOT practices are not readily available in the open literature, this survey proved to be an effective tool for gathering data on the current practices, methods and specifications associated with DOT use of GTR in asphalt pavement.

The research described herein is an investigation into the engineering properties necessary for use of scrap tires in construction replacing, supplementing, and improving common earthen materials of construction. The shredded crumbed rubber and lime is mixed in various proportions on clay and various properties of soil mixtures are found. The addition of shredded crumbed rubber with lime shows improvement in density and packing in clay, hence its beneficial to use for sub base course.
