AbstractThe granular pile anchor foundation is an effective and economical foundation system to counter the pullout forces exerted in case of transmission towers or foundations in expansive soil. The pullout tests were performed to study the behaviour of a single granular pile anchor in the clayey soil bed. Tests were conducted in a steel tank of 1 ×  1  ×  1 m size with the help of loading frame arrangement. The pullout load required for upward movement equal to 10% diameter was considered as the pullout capacity of the granular pile anchor. In the parametric study, length and diameter of the granular pile anchor were varied to examine their effect. Number of anchor plates was also varied in few tests. The pullout capacity enhanced with an increase in the diameter and length to diameter ratio. The effect of the length to diameter ratio was appreciable up to the value of 10. However, no significant effect was found in the cases of multiple anchor plates. A relationship is proposed to predict normalized pullout capacity.

Abstract Stone columns (or granular piles, GPs) are progressively being utilized for ground improvement, mostly for pliant edifice such as road mounds, oil depot, and so forth. The present analysis is done by introducing strengthening at both the ends of GP, i.e., bottom and top end so that the bulging problem will be solved and the beneficiary effect of the bearing stratum can be utilized by the bottom strengthening feature. Analysis of a single partially strengthened, at both top and bottom, end-bearing GP is presented in this article in terms of displacement affecting component for the top (DACT) of GP, percentage load transferred to the base (PLTB) of strengthened GP, and normalized shear stress (NSS). The PLTB of the strengthened GP was found to increase considerably. The NSS was found to reduce at the top end of GP and is found to be redistributed along the length of GP.

Expansive soils are those whose volume changes take place while it comes in contact with water. It expands during rainy season due to intake of water and shrinks during summer season. Expansive soils owe their characteristics due to the presence of swelling clay minerals. Expansive soils cover nearly 20% of landmass in India and include almost the entire Deccan plateau, western Madhya Pradesh, parts of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The properties that describe the expansive behaviour of soils are free swell index, swell potential and swell pressure. This behaviour has an impounding effect on the bearing capacity and strength of foundation lying on such a soil. Some of the stabilization techniques which are currently being used are physical alternations, sand cushioning, belled piers, under reamed piers, granular pile anchors, chemical stabilization, and fibre reinforcement techniques. This paper focuses on improvement in the strength characteristics of stabilized Chittur soil. The commonly used stabilizer for expansive soils is lime. This paper looks upon alternative materials such as fly ash and polypropylene fibres in order to reduce the lime content. It was concluded from the trials that an optimum combination of 1.5% lime, 10% fly ash and 0.2% polypropylene fibres contribut
