<p>The associated particle technique is applied to the D(d.n) He3 reaction, in order to produce a tagged neutron beam of accurately known energy, flux, and direction. The incident deuteron beam is obtained from a 400 Kv positive ion Van de Graaff accelerator. A description is given of the design of a uniform field sector magnet and other equipment associated with the stabilization and calibration of the energy of the incident deuteron beam. A versatile n-He3 coincidence system is described. The use of a silicon surface barrier detector with a thin nickel foil window enables complete resolution of the He3 peak with consequent improved neutron flux determination. The tagged neutron beam is used to measure the absolute neutron cross sections of the K39 (n,p) A39 and K39 (n, alpha) Cl36 reactions at a neutron energy of 2.46 Mev. The results obtained, (95 plus-minus 4) mb and (6.2 plus-minus 1) mb respectively, are compared with values obtained by other workers, and with theoretical predictions.</p>

A Demo-Oriented early NEutron Source (DONES) facility for material irradiation with nuclear is currently being designed. DONES aims to produce neutrons with fusion-relevant spectrum and fluence by means of D–Li stripping reactions occurring between a deuteron beam impacting a stable liquid lithium flowing film implementing the target. Given the hazard constituted by the liquid lithium inventory and the potential risk of reactions with water, air, and concrete eventually resulting in fire events, the Target Test Cell (TTC) is filled with helium and the reinforced concrete walls forming the bio-shield are covered with steel liners. A loss of Li in TTC, due to a large break in the Quench Tank, is postulated, and consequences are deterministically studied. With the TTC liner being water-cooled, the impact of the liner temperature rise following a leakage event is evaluated. Two separate MELCOR code models have been defined for the liquid lithium loop and water-cooled loop and are numerically coupled. The amount of leaked inventory dependent on the implemented safety logic and impact on TTC containment is evaluated. The water pressurization pattern within the liner cooling loop is studied to highlight possible risks of lithium–water/concrete reactions.

An alternative method for the detection of beryllium in light element matrices is proposed, implementing the use of a deuteron beam at energies from 1 to 2.1 MeV and the $^{9}$Be(d,n$\gamma )^{10}$B reaction. A HP GE detector of 20{\%} relative efficiency was used to detect the 718 keV gamma ray of $^{10}$B. The minimum detection limits obtained for beryllium, are compared to those taken with other NRA techniques (PIGE, heavy-ion and charged-particle spectroscopy) in complex matrices containing high concentrations of light elements. The absolute $\gamma $-ray yield of the reaction is also compared to absolute $\gamma $-ray yields from literature.

The pair of copper radionuclides 64Cu/67Cu (T1/2 = 12. 7 h/61.8 h) allows, respectively, PET imaging and targeted beta therapy. An analysis of the different production routes of 67Cu with charged particles was performed and the reaction 70Zn(d,x) route was identified as a promising one. It may allow the production of 67Cu without 64Cu. The production cross section has been measured up to 28.7 MeV. Measurements were done using the well-known stacked-foils technique using 97.5% enriched 70Zn homemade electroplated targets. These measurements complement at higher incident energies the only set of data available in nuclear databases. The results show that using a 26 MeV deuteron beam and a highly enriched 70Zn target, it is possible to produce high purity 67Cu comparable to that obtained using photoproduction. This production route can be of interest for future linear accelerators under development where mA deuteron beams can be available if adequate targetry is developed.

AbstractWe present measurements of differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the elastic $$^{2}\mathrm{H}(\mathbf {d},d){d}$$ 2 H ( d , d ) d scattering process. The data were obtained using a 130 MeV polarized deuteron beam. Cross sections and spin observables of the elastic scattering process were measured at the AGOR facility at KVI using two independent setups, namely BINA and BBS. The data harvest at setups are in excellent agreement with each other and allowed us to carry out a thorough systematic analysis to provide the most accurate data in elastic deuteron-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies. The results can be used to confront upcoming state-of-the-art calculations in the four-nucleon scattering domain, and will, thereby, provide further insights in the dynamics of three- and four-nucleon forces in few-nucleon systems.
