Abstract Surface wear is one of the major causes of damage to wire ropes in multi-layer winding systems. This damage leads to performance degradation and affects the service safety of wire rope. To reveal the wear evolution and the performance degradation of wire rope in service, the correlations between the wear characteristic parameters and the residual strength were investigated. The results show that the variation in the wear parameters is affected by the wear distribution and the structure of the wire rope. The main wear mechanisms between wire ropes are adhesion wear and abrasive wear. Different wear parameters should be combined to evaluate the wear state of the wire rope. The tensile temperature rise could accurately reflect the wear evolution of the in-service wire rope under the condition of a large wear degree. The negative correlation between the residual strength and the wear area of the damaged rope samples is the strongest.

Steel wire ropes are frequently subjected to dynamic reciprocal bending movement over sheaves or drums in cranes, elevators, mine hoists, and aerial ropeways. This kind of movement initiates fatigue damage on the ropes. It is a quite significant case to know bending cycles to failure of rope in service, which is also known as bending over sheave fatigue lifetime. It helps to take precautions in the plant in advance and eliminate catastrophic accidents due to the usage of rope when allowable bending cycles are exceeded. To determine the bending fatigue lifetime of ropes, experimental studies are conducted. However, bending over sheave fatigue testing in laboratory environments require high initial preparation cost and a long time to finalize the experiments. Due to those reasons, this chapter focuses on a novel prediction perspective to the bending over sheave fatigue lifetime of steel wire ropes by means of artificial neural networks.

To verify the effectiveness of polyurethane cement-prestressed steel wire ropes for flexural reinforcement of reinforced concrete T-girders, this paper conducts flexural test research on 12 pieces of T-girder specimens. Through the ABAQUS finite element program to build a model for numerical simulation, the results show polyurethane cement prestressed steel wire rope reinforcement can significantly increase the yield load and ultimate load of reinforced girders. Taking a girder in the test (20mm reinforcement thickness of polyurethane cement) as an example, yield load and ultimate load increased by 61.5% and 102.3% compared to unreinforced girder. The finite element model calculation results of T-girder bending reinforcement are in good agreement with the bending reinforcement test, and the error is only about 2%. For different strength concrete, the yield load increases slightly with the increase of concrete strength. For T-girders with different reinforcement ratios, the bearing capacity of strengthened girders changes significantly with the increase of longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The yield load of girders with reinforcement ratio of 1.82% and 1.35% is 29.84% and 65.85% higher than that of girders with reinforcement ratio of 0.91%. The yield deflection is 13.18% and 3.99% higher than that of girders with reinforcement ratio of 0.91%. It can be concluded that the bending reinforcement method of polyurethane cement prestressed steel wire ropes can effectively strengthen the main girder and ensure the structural safety.

ABSTRACT: This paper reports the analyses carried out with the company Pedrini SpA ad unico socio, located in Carobbio degli Angeli, Bergamo (IT). Wire ropes with diamond beads, used as cutting tools in multi-wire machines for cutting blocks of stone, were considered and a failure analysis of the wire ropes was carried out. The aim of the paper is to highlight the damage mechanisms of the wire ropes to increase service life of these cutting tools. Microscope observations and the penetrating liquids method were used to analyze the damaged wire ropes. Fatigue, corrosion and contact fatigue problems were observed and the effect of the centering of the beads on the wire rope was studied.

The hazards and deterioration of operating wire ropes on overhead cranes, which articulate the ladle in the basic oxygen steelmaking process and are subjected to intensive periodic loads and exposure to high temperatures, are discussed. An automated condition monitoring system (ACMS) based on a magnetic flux leakage testing (MFL) flaw detector permanently installed on the rope under test is used. An algorithm of the rope’s residual tensile strength assessment is provided. A specially developed software that submits a decision on the rope’s condition to the crane operator is described. The practice of combining magnetic rope testing (MRT) and tensile strength analysis for the quantitative assessment of rope condition is reviewed. Practical issues are also discussed, such as how to establish the condition monitoring process, set loss thresholds for rope metallic cross-sectional area, and safely prolong the service life of rope.

Abstract In the construction of cable erections, when passing through the reel of the tractor, the braided wire rope used for traction in the state of winding traction is subjected to the composite action of tensile, bending, extrusion, friction and other forces, of which the stress condition is the most complicated, and the wear is the most likely to occur. The Friction coefficient is an important factor which directly affects the mechanical and wear properties of wire ropes. Therefore, according to the cable traction condition, the influence of friction coefficient on the rope tension attenuation during the winding traction process is analyzed. Because the wear of wires between braided wire rope strands is the most serious, this paper focuses on the influence of the friction coefficient between the rope strands on the mechanical properties of wire ropes. Regarding YS9-8×19 braided wire rope as the research object, a solid model of “rope-wheel” winding traction system is established. Based on the actual conditions, the finite element simulation model of winding traction system is established by setting load and constraint conditions. The influence of friction coefficients on the stress and deformation of braided wire rope strands is researched, by setting different friction coefficients between rope strands and analyzing the simulation results, in order to provide theoretical instructions of braided wire ropes used for traction.
