To study the influence of nano-additives on the friction-wear characteristics of friction materials, the nano-sized silicon carbide particles which have excellent chemical and physical properties are considered to add in composite to form the modified friction material. The influence of the silicon carbide nanoparticles (SCN) on the friction-wear characteristics of copper-based friction materials (CBFM) is investigated via the SAE#2 (made in Hangzhou, China) clutch bench test with the applied pressure, rotating speed, and automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature taken into account. Moreover, the variations of friction torque and temperature are considered to evaluate the friction performance, and the variable coefficient is employed to describe the friction stability. The wear characteristics of friction materials are investigated by the disc changes in thickness and micro-morphology. The results show that the CBFM with SCN can provide a higher friction torque, which increased by 30% to 50% compared with CBFM. The variable coefficient of CBFM with SCN changes from 674 to 52 with the rotating speed raised from 600 rpm to 3000 rpm, which shows that the friction stability is relatively worse. Furthermore, the micromorphology shows that the CBFM with SCN has lower porosity and surface roughness, which increases the microscopic contact area and the coefficient of friction (COF). Simultaneously, the reduction in porosity also leads to a decrease in the cooling quality, bringing about a rapid temperature rise. Thus, the wear amount of CBFM with SCN increases significantly, especially for the friction disc in the axial middle position.

In the process of conveying coarse-grained minerals, the internal flow-through passage components of mining pumps are subject to wear. The flow of coarse particles in such pumps is complex and changes constantly, making it necessary to study the non-steady-state wear characteristics and test the flow passage components. The evolution of the surface wear rate for the flow passage components during one third of a rotation cycle (120°) of a mining pump impeller with small, design, and large flow rates was analyzed in this study based on a discrete phase model (DPM). The flow that occurs during an entire rotation cycle of the impeller was investigated. The wear test was carried out with a small test pump with the same specific speed as and a similar structure to that of the deep-sea mining pump. The test results were compared with the numerical calculation results of the deep-sea mining pump obtained by using the same numerical calculation method and wear model, and the test wear area was found to be more consistent with the numerical calculation wear area. The results show that the numerical calculation method used in this article can more accurately predict the surface wear of the passage components of the mining pump and provides a suitable method for the prediction of the wear characteristics of the mining pump.

Previous work has shown that performance and internal flow characteristics of a centrifugal pump can be significantly improved with grooved volute casing (GVC). However, it has been found that the selection of the design parameters of the groove structure also has a direct impact on the performance output, internal flow pressure pulsation and erosion wear characteristics of the overflow components of centrifugal pump, so it is necessary to further analyze the design rules of the groove structure parameters. In this study, we first investigated the influence of the number of grooves on the head, efficiency and unsteady pressure pulsation characteristics of the internal flow field of the centrifugal pump, and on this basis, the correlation between different particle parameters and the erosion wear of key overflow components under the conditions of solid–liquid two-phase flow were also studied, and the erosion wear characteristics of the inner wall of the volute casing of centrifugal pump with GVC and original volute casing (OVC) structures were compared. This research leads to the conclusion that when the number of grooves is 3, the groove structure has the least influence on the performance of the centrifugal pump, and the overall change of the performance curve is more stable. Additionally, the pressure pulsation at each monitoring point of the GVC under the same flow condition is smaller, and when the number of grooves increases, the pressure pulsation amplitude also decreases. When the number of grooves is 3, the GVC shows a more significant flow improvement effect under all flow conditions. Based on the improvement of the groove structure on the flow stability, the particle motion behavior can be affected at the same time, so that the pump with GVC can mitigate the erosion wear of the inner wall of the volute casing under the solid–liquid two-phase flow conditions, which improves the critical performance and service life of the key overflow components of the pump.

This paper deals with the microscopic wear characteristics of ceramic (Seeded Gel, SG) grinding wheels used in creep feed grinding. Creep feed grinding experiments with SG grinding wheels were carried out compared to rose-pink alumina (RA) grinding wheels. To clear the wear characteristics of the wheel working surface in creep feed grinding, changes in the shapes of grain cutting edges were observed by a field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). This is a self-sharpening phenomenon based on micro fractures generated on the top of SG grain cutting edges. On the other hand, large fracture and attritious wear effected RA grain cutting edges. In addition, the features of any grain cutting edges were evaluated using attritious wear flat percentage. Changes in attritious wear flat percentage of SG grits maintained constant value and were stable. From these results, the influence of wear mode of the grinding wheel on grinding characteristics parameter, such as grinding force and workpiece surface roughness, is understood.
