The 2020 Aronov Lecture with Dr. Annette Yoshiko Reed

In this edition of The Interview, Annette Yoshiko Reed(New York University) joins Bulletin editor RichardNewton for a conversation and discussion as part of the University of Alabama’s 18th annual Aronov Lecture. The Aronov Lecture invites an accomplished and internationally renowned research scholar in the field of religion to bring insights that can inform the larger work of the human sciences. Reed discusses her work on the tensions, rhetoric, and myths involved in the construction of Jewish and Christian identities in the late antique Mediterranean and beyond, as well as her current thinking about how we approach the past through remembering and forgetting. She shares with the audience engaging stories, thought-provoking scholarship, and practical advice on navigating academia and the development of research interests.

“СТІВЕН ДЖОЙС СЛУХАЄ”: ЦІ СЛОВА ЖАХАЛИ НЕ ОДИН ДЕСЯТОК ЖУРНАЛІСТІВ

The Ukrainian translation of Terence Killeen’s article “The Words Many a Journalist Dreaded Hearing: «This is Stephen Joyce»” is provided. Terence Killeen is the James Joyce Centre’s research scholar (Dublin). He is the author of numerous publications devoted to James Joyce’s oeuvre. Among them, there are “«Ulysses»’ Unbound: A Reader’s Companion to James Joyce’s «Ulysses»” (2004), an essay on the earliest version of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” (2020) and others. He is a former journalist although still continues to publish his works on the pages of “The Irish Times”, a leading Irish newspaper (Dublin). The above-mentioned translation made by Ukrainian scholars E. Honcharenko and L. Baisara is accompanied by the detailed and meticulously collected explanatory notes to the article. This piece of work deals with Stephen James Joyce (1932-2020), a grandson of the outstanding Irishman, James Joyce. An eminent Irish writer wrote the poem “Ecce Puer” to commemorate the birth of his grandson and the death of his own father John Joyce, the translation of which is also presented in this article. Stephen Joyce was the only son of George [Giorgio] Joyce, James Joyce’s son. Stephen was a grandson and the last surviving direct descendant of James Joyce. The article highlights Stephen’s real attitude to the literary inheritance of his late grandfather. The translation of the article is published with the Terence Killeen’s kind permission. The original version of the article was published in the Dublin’s newspaper “The Irish Times” on February 23, 2020. Personalized Scholar Recommendation Based on Multi-Dimensional Features

The rapid development of social networking platforms in recent years has made it possible for scholars to find partners who share similar research interests. Nevertheless, this task has become increasingly challenging with the dramatic increase in the number of scholar users over social networks. Scholar recommendation has recently become a hot topic. Thus, we propose a personalized scholar recommendation approach, Mul-RSR (Multi-dimensional features based Research Scholar Recommendation), which improves accuracy and interpretability. In this work, Mul-RSR aims to provide personalized recommendation for academic social platforms. Mul-RSR uses the Doc2Vec text model and the random walk algorithm to calculate textual similarity and social relevance to measure the correlation between scholars. It is able to recommend Top-N scholars for each scholar based on multi-layer perception and attention mechanism. To evaluate the proposed approach, we conduct a series of experiments based on public and self-collected ResearchGate datasets. The results demonstrate that our approach improves the recommendation hit rate, and the hit rate reaches 59.31% when the N value is 30. Through these evaluations, we show Mul-RSR can provide a more solid scientific decision-making basis and achieve a better recommendation effect.

A Survey on Recent Trends of PIO and Its Variants Applied for Motion Planning of Dynamic Agents

Pigeon Inspired Optimization (PIO) algorithm is gaining popularity since its development due to faster convergence ability with great efficiencies when compared with other bio-inspired algorithms. The navigation capability of homing pigeons has been precisely used in Pigeon Inspired Optimization algorithm and continuous advancement in existing algorithms is making it more suitable for complex optimization problems in various fields. The main theme of this survey paper is to introduce the basics of PIO along with technical advancements of PIO for the motion planning techniques of dynamic agents. The survey also comprises of findings and limitations of proposed work since its development to help the research scholar around the world for particular algorithm selection especially for motion planning. This survey might be extended up to application based in order to understand the importance of algorithm in future studies.

Peer Pressure of Publishing or Perishing (PPPP)

Researchers create or improvise knowledge by innovating concepts, methods and/or interpretations. Scientific research and scientific writing seem to be inseparable in this modern world for professional existence. Publications are important to give a thrust and positive boost up in your career. Since last decade, research has taken a new horizon. Medical schools and universities frequently use the quantification of publication as the measure of a scholar’s academic competency. Publications are an essential and sometimes the sole criteria considered during recruitments. The numerical value of the published work is taking a leap step ahead of the quality of research. Scholars, who do not have the aptitude of publishing frequently or who focus more on their clinical work and teaching activities to shape up the undergraduates’ and postgraduates’ future, may find themselves out of this professional race. Each individual faculty of the medical institutions is unique research scholar. There is an upcoming trend that unless they pen down their research, they will be undervalued in the academic workplace. This undue “Peer Pressure of Publishing or Perishing” is floating as the new “Catch Phrase” of the professional era.

A comparitive analysis of the issues faced by research scholar in writing English and in publishing their research paper

Writing is the most important aspect in gaining command over any topic. Reading and Writing make us wise and if we can deliver the thing that we think, it brings out the best version of our thought process. One should read a lot because I believe reading creates emotions in its reader.It can develop empathy in the author.
