A novel coronavirus designated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged and caused an outbreak of unusual viral pneumonia. Several reports have shown that cross-reactive antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 also exist in people unexposed to this virus. However, the neutralizing activity of cross-reactive antibodies is controversial. Here, we subjected plasma samples from SARS-CoV-2-unexposed elderly Korean people (n = 119) to bead-based IgG antibody analysis. SARS-CoV-2 S1 subunit-reactive IgG antibody analysis detected positive signals in some samples (59 of 119, 49.6%). SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD)-reactive antibody levels were most significantly correlated with human coronavirus-HKU1 S1 subunit-reactive antibody levels. To check the neutralizing activity of plasma samples, the SARS-CoV-2 spike pseudotype neutralizing assay was used. However, the levels of cross-reactive antibodies did not correlate with neutralizing activity. Instead, SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection was neutralized by some RBD-reactive plasma samples (n = 9, neutralization ≥ 25%, P ≤ 0.05), but enhanced by other RBD-reactive plasma samples (n = 4, neutralization ≤ -25%, P ≤ 0.05). Interestingly, the blood plasma groups with enhancing and neutralizing effects had high levels of SARS-CoV-2 RBD-reactive antibodies than the plasma group that had no effect. These results suggest that some SARS-CoV-2 RBD-reactive antibodies from pre-pandemic elderly people exert two opposing functions during SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection. In conclusion, preformed RBD-reactive antibodies may have two opposing functions, namely, protecting against and enhancing viral infection. Analysis of the epitopes of preformed antibodies will be useful to elucidate the underlying mechanism.

Ceramic topcoats of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) make it possible to increase the working temperature of the hot sections of jet engines. Yttria-stabilized zirconia oxide (YSZ) is usually used to protect the turbine blades and vanes against high temperature and oxidation. It is necessary to develop new materials which can operate at higher temperatures in a highly oxidizing gas atmosphere. Re2Zr2O7-type pyrochlores are promising YSZ replacements. Usually, they are produced by mixing pure oxides in the calcination process at higher temperatures. In a recent article, the new concept of pyrochlore synthesis during the deposition process was presented. The new technology, called reactive plasma spray physical vapor deposition (reactive PS-PVD), was developed and a Gd2Zr2O7 (GZO) coating was achieved. The reactive PS-PVD process allowed for the use of a mixture of untreated ZrO2 and Gd2O3 powders as reactants, instead of the commercially available gadolinium zirconate powders used in other types of processes. The results of microstructure observations revealed a columnar microstructure in the produced ceramic layer. The phase composition indicated the presence of gadolinium zirconate. Thermal analysis showed a decrease in the thermal conductivity in the range of 700 to 1200 °C of the produced layers, as compared to the layer made of the currently used conventional YSZ.

The development of niobium oxide (Nb2O5) thin films is an important work as a result of wide applications of this oxide in the field of material science and thin-film applications. In this study, thin-film microstructures of aluminum (Al)-doped Nb2O5 were prepared by DC plasma sputtering on glasses substrate. The ratio of doping was (0.5, 1, and 1.5) wt. % Al. The obtained samples were thermally treated at 450 °C. Characterized and analyzed the physical properties by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-Visible spectroscopy for optical properties investigation. Results showed that the average crystalline size of Nb2O5:0.5%Al film was found at 26.47 nm and the structure was a monoclinic phase for all samples. The distribution of grain size was found lower than 36.3 nm and uninformed particles on the surface. The analyzed optical properties showed the absorption decreased from 0.46 to 0.05 with increasing the wavelength and Low energy gap values decreased from 3.10 eV for Nb2O5 samples to 2.84 eV for 1.5%Al samples. In general, the doping by aluminum improved the physical properties of Nb2O5 films.
