During the electrochemical reaction of a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC), (in this paper HT-PEMFC means operating in the range of 120 to 200 °C) the inhomogeneity of temperature, flow rate, and pressure in the interior is likely to cause the reduction of ion conductivity or thermal stability weight loss of proton exchange membrane materials, and it is additionally likely to cause uneven fuel distribution, thereby affecting the working performance and service life of the HT-PEMFC. This study used micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology to develop a flexible three-in-one microsensor which is resistant to high temperature electrochemical environments; we selected appropriate materials and process parameters to protect the microsensor from failure or damage under long-term tests. The proposed method can monitor the local temperature, flow rate, and pressure distribution in HT-PEMFC in real time.

Precipitate in B20 fuel stored in storage tanks can accumulate at the bottom level of the tank and affect the fuel filter, clogging in the fuel distribution and engine system. This study examines the precipitate formation prediction in B20 fuel based on the monoglyceride content in biodiesel. This research used a modified CSFT method of ASTM D7501 for the precipitation test. Monopalmitin was added to biodiesel with a variation of monoglyceride content. Each biodiesel sample was then blended with petroleum diesel fuel to produce two groups of samples. Each sample was separately soaked in the cooling chamber at constant and room temperature for 21 days. The bottom layer of each B20 fuel sample stored in the measuring cylinder was then pipetted and filtered, washed with petro-ether, vacuum-dried, and weighed for a constant amount of precipitate retained on the filter. The simulation results show that the ratios between the amount of collected precipitate at the bottom layer of the 2-liter measuring cylinder and the total amount of collected precipitate for the 2-liter measuring cylinder increased with the monoglyceride content biodiesel. This ratio was used to predict the amount of accumulated sludge for a given volume of B20 fuel loaded into the storage tank. This study shows the effect of monoglyceride content on the precipitation behaviour in the storage tank concerning general tank storage dimension parameters and B20 loading frequency. This approach can be applied to estimate the sludge removal frequency for biodiesel storage.

By the previous studies it was established that the character of solid fuel distribution throughout the bed height considerably effects the sintering machines productivity and the sinter quality. The purpose of the study was assessment of solid fuel distribution in the agglomerated burden throughout the height of bed at sintering machine. Sinter mix samples were taken from three sections of the bed: 150 mm - top part, 150 mm - middle part and 170 mm - bottom part at the sintering machines of NLMK. After screening the samples, particle size distribution was determined, as well as carbon content throughout the bed height and in the particles of different sizes. It was found that all solid fuel, irrespective of the size, gets balled into sinter mix granules, fine fuel (fraction -0.63 mm) was almost evenly distributed over the granules of different sizes, while coarse fuel (+3 mm) is mainly picked up by large granules. Solid fuel of -3 mm +0.63 mm fraction is mostly balled into 3-5 mm granules. Such nature of solid fuel distribution in the granules of the pelletized mix results in suboptimal distribution of fuel throughout the bed height at sintering machines No. 1, 2, despite satisfactory size segregation of the mix: it changes from low content in the top part to a higher content at the bottom of the bed. At sintering machines No. 3, 4 where there was no size segregation of the mix, fuel distribution throughout the bed height changes from optimal to non-optimal (low content in the top part). To optimize solid fuel distribution throughout the bed height with both good and poor segregation of the mix, it is necessary to reduce the content of 0-0.5 mm particles fraction in coke breeze.

Isobutanol is an important and valuable platform chemical and an appealing biofuel that is compatible with contemporary combustion engines and existing fuel distribution infrastructure. The present study aimed to compare the potential of triticale, wheat and barley starch as feedstock for isobutanol production using an engineered strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) approach showed that all three starches were viable feedstock for co-production of isobutanol and ethanol and could produce titres similar to that produced using purified sugar as feedstock. A fed-batch process using triticale starch yielded 0.006 g isobutanol and 0.28 g ethanol/g starch. Additionally, it is demonstrated that Fusarium graminearum infected grain starch contaminated with mycotoxin can be used as an effective feedstock for isobutanol and ethanol co-production. These findings demonstrate the potential for triticale as a purpose grown energy crop and show that mycotoxin-contaminated grain starch can be used as feedstock for isobutanol biosynthesis, thus adding value to a grain that would otherwise be of limited use.
