Response to a review of two books on the Holocaust and why the Jews were singled out for extermination by Amos Goldberg, Helmut Walser Smith, Simone Gigliotti, Marc Buggein, and Alan Confino, in “Book Forum,” Journal of Genocide Research (2016).1 The two books reviewed are by Alan Confino, Foundational Pasts: The Holocaust as Historical Understanding, 2012, and A World Without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from Persecution to Genocide, 2014.2 The Journal of Genocide Research came under scrutiny in two research studies of readers who are genocide professionals (N=67) and a smaller number of students of Holocaust and Genocide courses (N=39), together N=106. These studies evoked considerable controversy. The present review essay is in response to a subsequent multi-author review in the book forum of the Journal of Genocide Research of two books on the Holocaust, in which both the review essay and the books under discussion are shown to be strong minimizations of the significance of the Holocaust: The thesis advanced is that the extermination of the Jews was not a product of ancient antisemitism-hatred of Jews, but a function of the Nazi vision of creating a new world. Keywords: minimization of the Holocaust, antisemitism, denials of genocide, integrity of genocide studies, laws against incitement of violence, Wannsee Conference, Final Solution

BACKGROUND: Many transgender individuals of varying ages are at risk of developing eating disorder behaviors or unhealthy weight management behaviors. AIMS: This article reports the results of a review of the current literature on eating disorder behaviors among transgender individuals. METHOD: A literature search using CINAHL Complete, PubMed, and PsychInfo was conducted using key words “eating disorder,” “eating disorder behaviors,” and “transgender.” Results were narrowed through author review and concurrence to eight peer-reviewed English language articles from 2013 to 2018. RESULTS: Four main themes emerged across the articles reviewed: gender characteristics and body dissatisfaction, public affirmations and stigma, amenorrhea, and mental health treatment and therapies. CONCLUSIONS: There is still much exploration needed to better care for this population in a sensitive and timely manner. Many valuable clinical implications have emerged from the current literature, which provide a positive step toward optimal individualized patient care.

AbstractProlonged life expectancies contribute to the increasing prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that is already the leading cause of severe vision loss among the elderly in developed countries. In dry AMD, the disease culminates into vast retinal atrophy, whereas the wet form is characterized by retinal edema and sudden vision loss due to neovascularization originating from the choroid beneath the Bruch’s membrane. There is no treatment for dry AMD and despite intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that suppress the neovessel formation, also wet AMD needs new therapies to prevent the disease progression and to serve patients lacking of positive response to current medicines. Knowledge on disease mechanisms is a prerequisite for the drug development, which is hindered by the multifactorial nature of AMD. Numerous distinguished publications have revealed AMD mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level and in this multi-author review, we take a bit broader look at the topic with some novel aspects.

AbstractOsteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a rapidly progressive degenerative disease frequently affecting individuals within their fourth and fifth decade of life. Though often asymptomatic, patients with ONFH may present with a wide range of symptoms, including deep groin pain. There are many classification systems used to stratify disease severity, of which the Association of Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) classification system is currently the most comprehensive. Once diagnosed, an estimated 75% of patients will experience femoral head collapse within three years of diagnosis if left untreated. Currently, the only definitive intervention available for ONFH is total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, recent advancements have been made with respect to the available treatment modalities. In this article, the author review the management of ONFH, providing clinicians with the necessary information to counsel their patients.

Across the globe labour formations have generally been experiencing insurmountable challenges related to globalisation these challenges, though differs in the levels of impact, the issues raised are universally applicable. Studies show that trade unions are trying to combat these challenges by adopting organising model elements which involves social unionism movement. Unfortunately, this has not been adopted by all unions. This paper has as its main objective of situating the trade unions within the context of globalisation era with a view to assessing the effects of globalisation on the roles of labour movement. It is believed more than ever before, that the challenges facing the labour unions are daunting and this has changed the traditional roles of the trade union to be more dynamic and versatile. Attempts are made to define trade union and globalisation in its multi-faceted dimension. It looks at these challenges faced by trade unions due to globalisation and how they have responded to these challenges. The author review various areas that globalisation have been perceives to have adverse effects on trade unions and its members and their responses, recommending measures to be adopted by unions to overcome these challenges

Abstract Introduction: Pharmacogenomic tests relevant to neuropsychiatric medications have been clinically available for more than a decade, but the utility of regular testing is still unknown. Tests available include both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic targets. The potential practice benefits vary with each target. Methods: A 10-year literature review was completed utilizing the PubMed database to identify articles relating to the specific pharmacogenomic targets discussed. Further article selection was based on author review for clinical utility. Results: The clinical dosing guidance available for neuropsychiatric medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants with varying genotypes is useful and has strong evidence to support testing, but it is limited to mainly pharmacokinetic application. Pharmacodynamic targets are gaining additional evidence with increased research, and although the mechanisms behind the potential interactions are scientifically sound, the bridge to clinical practice application is still lacking. Discussion: Although the benefits of decreasing adverse reactions and improving response time are appealing, clinicians may not utilize pharmacogenomic testing in routine practice due to several barriers. Further clinical guidance and studies are needed to support testing for other neuropsychiatric medications and targets.
