This study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of chokeberry juice concentrate (CJC) and foaming agent (egg albumin) with different percentages on the selected physical properties of agar gel. The agar gels with the addition of 5, 10, and 20% concentrations of chokeberry juice concentrate and with fructose addition were prepared. In addition, the foamed gels with different concentrations of egg albumin (in the range 0.5–2.0%) and CJC were produced. The water content, colour, density, hold-up and some mechanical and TPA (Texture Profile Analysis) descriptors as well some structural and acoustic emission parameters of non-aerated and foamed gels were analysed. The addition of CJC changed the colour of agar gel with fructose, the attractive appearance of the aerated gel was also linked with the addition of concentrate. The addition of 20% of CJC and foaming agent created samples with very low hardness, cohesiveness, and gumminess, and the structure of the aerated samples was characterised by the larger bubble diameter and the wider distribution of their size. The more promising texture and structure properties were obtained for samples with aerated gels with 5 and 10% addition of chokeberry juice concentrate.

Copper complexes with different ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA, ammonium citrate tribasic, TAC, and alanine, ALA) were studied in aqueous solutions and hydrogels with the aim of setting the optimal conditions for copper stain removal from marble by agar gels, with damage minimization. The stoichiometry and stability of copper complexes were monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and the symmetry of Cu(II) centers in the different gel formulations was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Cleaning effectiveness in optimized conditions was verified on marble laboratory specimens through color variations and by determining copper on gels by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Two copper complexes with TAC were identified, one having the known stoichiometry 1:1, and the other 1:2, Cu(TAC)2, never observed before. The stability of all the complexes at different pH was observed to increase with pH. At pH 10.0, the gel’s effectiveness in removing copper salts from marble was the highest in the presence of ALA, followed by EDTA, TAC, and pure agar gel. Limited damage to the marble surface was observed when gels with added EDTA and TAC were employed, whereas agar gel with ALA was determined to be the most efficient and safe cleaning material.

Background: Seaweeds and its derivatives are extensively used as biostimulants in horticulture and agriculture as a replacement for chemical fertilizers. G. edulis and G. acerosa are easily cultivable and economically important seaweeds. They are a rich source of phytohormones, amino acids, antibiotics, vitamins, micro, macro elements and agar. Such natural products have great demand and been commercialized these days to promote sustainable agriculture. Dried and finely powdered algal biomass is used directly as a biostimulant. Algal polysaccharides such as agar can be an innovative alternative to synthetic polymers used in horticulture as they contain active biostimulant compounds and also reported to hold water in the soil that aids plant growth with minimum water consumption than usually required. A. aritis being one of the most consumed leafy vegetables throughout the world can be harvested indoors with added nutrients and minimal water utilization.Methods: The field trial is a comparative evaluation of the two selected species of agarophytes for promoting plant (A. aritis) growth and the extracted agar tested for germination tests, bio-stimulatory property under water stress. Growth parameters were recorded after three weeks. The agarophytes were also qualitatively screened for phytochemicals and WD-XRF analysis.Result: The present work will be a supplementary contribution for assessing agarophytes with biostimulant properties and the characteristic agar gels that expand plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, thus constituting an alternative to synthetic plant protection products.

In this study, we determine the effect of temperature and frequency on the acoustic properties of konjac glucomannan (KGM)-agar gels to confirm their compatibilities as tissue mimicking materials (TMMs). The acoustic properties of four samples; A (KGM-0.10 g agar), B (KGM-0.20 g agar), C (KGM-0.30 g agar) and D (KGM-0.40 g agar) were measured using pulse echo immersion technique. Findings indicated that the longitudinal velocities of all samples were increased while their attenuation coefficients were decreased as the temperature increased from 27.0 to 37.0°C. It also showed that the phase velocities of all samples were independent to frequency but their attenuation coefficients were increased as the frequency increased from 4.0 to 6.0 MHz. KGM-agar gels are compatible as soft TMMs since their acoustic properties are comparable with the acoustic properties of soft tissue.

We review some aspects of the rapid isolation of, screening for and characterization of jumbo phages, i.e., phages that have dsDNA genomes longer than 200 Kb. The first aspect is that, as plaque-supporting gels become more concentrated, jumbo phage plaques become smaller. Dilute agarose gels are better than conventional agar gels for supporting plaques of both jumbo phages and, prospectively, the even larger (>520 Kb genome), not-yet-isolated mega-phages. Second, dilute agarose gels stimulate propagation of at least some jumbo phages. Third, in-plaque techniques exist for screening for both phage aggregation and high-in-magnitude, negative average electrical surface charge density. The latter is possibly correlated with high phage persistence in blood. Fourth, electron microscopy of a thin section of a phage plaque reveals phage type, size and some phage life cycle information. Fifth, in-gel propagation is an effective preparative technique for at least some jumbo phages. Sixth, centrifugation through sucrose density gradients is a relatively non-destructive jumbo phage purification technique. These basics have ramifications in the development of procedures for (1) use of jumbo phages for phage therapy of infectious disease, (2) exploration of genomic diversity and evolution and (3) obtaining accurate metagenomic analyses.
