The occurrence of pain is often closely related to the psychological status, and the threshold for pain tolerance varies from patient to patient. In short, the factors affecting orthodontic pain are diverse and have individual differences. Tooth pain after the first force of intraoral malocclusion orthodontic treatment is one of the common complications of fixed orthodontic treatment, which often affects the outcome of treatment of patients with malocclusion and their subjective satisfaction with fixed orthodontic treatment. The purpose of the paper was to investigate the basic patterns and influencing factors of dental pain in fixed orthodontic patients within seven days after the initial wearing of straight arch aligners and the analysis of the effect of psychological intervention on dental pain using the visual simulation scoring method. According to the inclusion criteria of the experimental design, 89 patients who visited the Department of Orthodontics of Hospital for malocclusion were randomly divided into observation group and control group, and the observation group used chewing gum as psychological intervention, while the control group did not use any intervention. The effect of psychological intervention on periodontal pain was analyzed. The results of the paper were that all but 3 of the 89 patients had no pain, and all the patients had different degrees of dental pain at different points in time.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) for orthodontic pain control. Materials and Methods: This spilt-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was performed on 44 mandibular first molars of 22 orthodontic patients at the Orthodontics Department of Shahid Beheshti Dental University. Elastomeric separators were placed at the mesial and distal of mandibular right and left first molars by separating pliers. Randomly, LIPUS was used at one side for 7 min and the same device with 0-degree intensity was used as sham for the other side on the facial skin. The same procedure was repeated after 24 h. Patients recorded their level of pain at 1, 6, and 24 h, and also on days 2 to 7 after, using a visual analog scale (VAS). Results: The effect of type of treatment (P=0.019), time of assessment (P<0.000) and the interaction effect of type of treatment and time of assessment (P=0.055) on the pain score were all significant. The mean pain score in the LIPUS group was significantly lower than that in the control group at 24 h (P=0.002), 4 days (P=0.031) and 5 days (P=0.035). Conclusion: LIPUS can be safely used during orthodontic treatment for pain control since it is safe, non-invasive, low-cost, and easy to use.

AbstractBy summarizing evidence from existing literature, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of attitude modification interventions in the reduction of orthodontic pain in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. A comprehensive search strategy was implemented using both manual and electronic search methods to identify both indexed and nonindexed articles in databases as well as to reduce the possibility of excluding relevant studies by chance. The online database search strategy incorporated the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and EBSCO from 1940 to May 2020. The results of this review suggest that attitude modification interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, structured phone calls, and text messages are effective methods in the reduction of pain intensity in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. In conclusion, attitude modification methods are promising and safe nonpharmacological interventions that can be used to control pain in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment without having any side effects or complications.
