Suction-feeding in fishes is a ubiquitous form of prey capture whose outcome depends both on the movements of the predator and the prey, and on the dynamics of the surrounding fluid, which exerts forces on the two organisms. The inherent complexity of suction-feeding has challenged previous efforts to understand how the feeding strikes are modified when species evolve to feed on different prey types. Here, we use the concept of dynamic similarity, commonly applied to understanding the mechanisms of swimming, flying, walking and aquatic feeding. We characterize the hydrodynamic regimes pertaining to (i) the forward movement of the fish (ram), and (ii) the suction flows for feeding strikes of 71 species of acanthomorph fishes. A discriminant function analysis revealed that feeding strikes of zooplanktivores, generalists and piscivores could be distinguished based on their hydrodynamic regimes. Furthermore, a phylogenetic comparative analysis revealed that there are distinctive hydrodynamic adaptive peaks associated with zooplanktivores, generalists and piscivores. The scaling of dynamic similarity across species, body sizes and feeding guilds in fishes indicates that elementary hydrodynamic principles govern the trophic evolution of suction-feeding in fishes.

Biological cilia pump the surrounding fluid by asymmetric beating that is driven by dynein motors between sliding microtubule doublets. The complexity of biological cilia raises the question about minimal systems that can re-create similar patterns of motion. One such system consists of a pair of microtubules that are clamped at the proximal end. They interact through dynein motors that cover one of the filaments and pull against the other one. Here, we study theoretically the static shapes and the active dynamics of such a system. Using the theory of elastica, we analyse the shapes of two filaments of different lengths with clamped ends. Starting from equal lengths, we observe a transition similar to Euler buckling leading to a planar shape. When further increasing the length ratio, the system assumes a non-planar shape with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry after a secondary bifurcation and then transitions to planar again. The predicted curves agree with experimentally observed shapes of microtubule pairs. The dynamical system can have a stable fixed point, with either bent or straight filaments, or limit cycle oscillations. The latter match many properties of ciliary motility, demonstrating that a two-filament system can serve as a minimal actively beating model.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are the instruments of choice for high-precision manipulation and sensing processes at the microscale. They are, therefore, a subject of interest in many leading industrial and academic research sectors owing to their superior potential in applications requiring extreme precision, as well as in their use as a scalable device. Certain applications tend to require a MEMS device to function with low operational temperatures, as well as within fully immersed conditions in various media and with different flow parameters. This study made use of a V-shaped electrothermal actuator to demonstrate a novel, state-of-the-art numerical methodology with a two-way coupled analysis. This methodology included the effects of fluid–structure interaction between the MEMS device and its surrounding fluid and may be used by MEMS design engineers and analysts at the design stages of their devices for a more robust product. Throughout this study, a thermal–electric finite element model was strongly coupled to a finite volume model to incorporate the spatially varying cooling effects of the surrounding fluid (still air) onto the V-shaped electrothermal device during steady-state operation. The methodology was compared to already established and accepted analysis methods for MEMS electrothermal actuators in still air. The maximum device temperatures for input voltages ranging from 0 V to 10 V were assessed. During the postprocessing routine of the two-way electrothermal actuator coupled analysis, a spatially-varying heat transfer coefficient was evident, the magnitude of which was orders of magnitude larger than what is typically applied to macro-objects operating in similar environmental conditions. The latter phenomenon was correlated with similar findings in the literature.

Abstract This study presents impingement cooling from a flat plate by multiple asymmetric jets. Such jets are discharged through blunt-edge inline orifice holes with a thickness-to-diameter ratio of t/Dj = 0.5 and a jet-to-jet spacing of T/Dj = 4.0, at the Reynolds number of 20,000. Firstly, fluidic features are established both in free exit and with impingement, at varying short target spacing (e.g., H/Dj = 4.0). Secondly, thermal characteristics of the jet impingement are elucidated. Results demonstrate that, due to a skewed incidence of the coolant stream upstream of concave orifice holes, the resulting multiple orifice jets are asymmetric and skewed relative to the orifice axis. These results mimic multiple fluidically inclined jets. However, asymmetric entrainment that takes place causes faster mixing with the surrounding fluid at rest as well as faster decay of momentum. This shows more effective cooling from a flat plate for the relatively short H/Dj range than conventional symmetric orifice and nozzle jets.

The prediction of power required to propel a high-speed catamaran involves the hydrodynamic interactions between the hull surface and the surrounding fluid that may be difficult to compute numerically. In this study model-scale experiments are used as a basis for comparison to full-scale sea trials data measured on a 112m Incat wave-piercing catamaran to predict the full-scale powering requirements from model-scale testing. By completing water jet shaft power measurements on an Incat vessel during sea trials, comparison of these results was made to model-scale test results to provide good correlation. The work demonstrates that the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) extrapolation techniques used provide a good basis for extrapolating the data from model-scale to full-scale to predict the power requirements for the full-scale catamaran vessel operating at high Froude Number with water jet propulsion. This provides a useful tool for future designers and researchers for determining the power requirements of a catamaran vessel through model tests.

Hydrodynamic interactions of a two-solid microspheres system in a viscous incompressible fluid at low Reynolds number is investigated analytically. One of the spheres is conducting and assumed to be actively in motion under the action of an external oscillator field, and as the result, the other nonconducting sphere moves due to the induced flow oscillation of the surrounding fluid. The fluid flow past the spheres is described by the Stokes equation and the governing equation in the vector form for the two-sphere system is solved asymptotically using the two-timing method. For illustrations, applying a simple oscillatory external field, a systematic description of the average velocity of each sphere is formulated. The trajectory of the sphere was found to be inversely proportional to the frequency of the external field. The results demonstrated that no collisions occur between the spheres as the system moves in a circular motion with a fixed separation distance.

For over a century, scientists have sought to understand how fish orient against an incoming flow, even without visual and flow cues. Here, we make an essential step to elucidate the hydrodynamic underpinnings of rheotaxis through the study of the bidirectional coupling between fish and the surrounding fluid. By modeling a fish as a vortex dipole in an infinite channel with an imposed background flow, we establish a planar dynamical system for the cross-stream coordinate and orientation. The system dynamics captures the existence of a critical flow speed for fish to successfully orient while performing cross-stream, periodic sweeping movements. Model predictions are validated against experimental observations in the literature on the rheotactic behavior of fish deprived of visual and lateral line cues. The crucial role of bidirectional hydrodynamic interactions unveiled by this model points at an overlooked limitation of existing experimental paradigms to study rheotaxis in the laboratory.

AbstractWe propose an experiment to demonstrate spontaneous ordering and symmetry breaking of kinesin-driven microtubules confined to an optical trap. Calculations involving the feasibility of such an experiment are first performed which analyze the power needed to confine microtubules and address heating concerns. We then present the results of first-principles simulations of active microtubules confined in such a trap and analyze the types of motion observed by the microtubules as well as the velocity of the surrounding fluid, both near the trap and in the far-field. We find three distinct phases characterized by breaking of distinct symmetries and also analyze the power spectrum of the angular momenta of polymers to further quantify the differences between these phases. Under the correct conditions, microtubules were found to spontaneously align with one another and circle the trap in one direction.

One common approach for anti-erosion measures in low pressure steam turbines is to equip a hollow stator vane with slots on the airfoil surface in order to remove the water film by suction and consequently reduce the amount of secondary droplets. The purpose of this paper is to build an understanding of the predominant effects in fluid-film interaction and to examine the suitability of modern numerical methods for the design process of such slots. The performance of a suction slot in terms of collection rate and air leakage is investigated numerically in a flatplate setup with upstream injection of water. In order to model the relevant phenomena (film transport, edge stripping of droplets, transport of droplets in the surrounding fluid, wall impingement of droplets) an unsteady Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation setup is applied. The accuracy of the numerical approach is assessed by comparison with experimental measurements. The comparison of four cases with the measured data demonstrates that the chosen simulation approach is able to predict the main features of film flow and interaction with the surrounding fluid. The collection rate as well as fluid film properties show the same qualitative dependency from water mass flow rate and air velocity.

The characterisation and monitoring of viscous fluids have many important applications. This paper reports a refined ‘dipstick’ method for ultrasonic measurement of the properties of viscous fluids. The presented method is based on the comparison of measurements of the ultrasonic properties of a waveguide that is immersed in a viscous liquid with the properties when it is immersed in a reference liquid. We can simultaneously determine the temperature and viscosity of a fluid based on the changes in the velocity and attenuation of the elastic shear waves in the waveguide. Attenuation is mainly dependent on the viscosity of the fluid that the waveguide is immersed in and the speed of the wave mainly depends on the surrounding fluid temperature. However, there is a small interdependency since the mass of the entrained viscous liquid adds to the inertia of the system and slows down the wave. The presented measurements have unprecedented precision so that the change due to the added viscous fluid mass becomes important and we propose a method to model such a ‘viscous effect’ on the wave propagation velocity. Furthermore, an algorithm to correct the velocity measurements is presented. With the proposed correction algorithm, the experimental results for kinematic viscosity and temperature show excellent agreement with measurements from a highly precise in-lab viscometer and a commercial resistance temperature detector (RTD) respectively. The measurement repeatability of the presented method is better than 2.0% in viscosity and 0.5% in temperature in the range from 8 to 300 cSt viscosity and 40 to 90 °C temperature.
