Abstract I assemble 4684 star-forming early-type galaxies (ETGs) and 2011 composite ETGs (located in the composite region on the BPT diagram) from the catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 MPA-JHU emission-line measurements. I compare the properties of both ETG samples and investigate their compositions, stellar masses, specific star formation rates (sSFRs), and excitation mechanisms. Compared with star-forming ETGs, composite ETGs have higher stellar mass and lower sSFR. In the stellar mass and u − r color diagram, more than 60% of star-forming ETGs and composite ETGs are located in the green valley, showing that the two ETG samples may have experienced star formation and that ∼17% of star-forming ETGs lie in the blue cloud, while ∼30% of composite ETGs lie in the red sequence. In the [N II]/Hα versus EWHα (the Hα equivalent width) diagram, all star-forming ETGs and most of the composite ETGs are located in the star-forming galaxy region, and composite ETGs have lower EWHα than their counterparts. We show the relations between 12+log(O/H) and log(N/O) for both ETG samples, and suggest that nitrogen production of some star-forming ETGs can be explained by the evolution scheme of Coziol et al., while the prodution of composite ETGs may be a consequence of the inflowing of metal-poor gas and these more evolved massive galaxies.

We have discovered a peculiar form of fracture that occurs in polymer network formed by covalent adaptable bonds. Due to the dynamic feature of the bonds, fracture of this network is rate dependent, and the crack propagates in a highly nonsteady manner. These phenomena cannot be explained by the existing fracture theories, most of which are based on steady-state assumption. To explain these peculiar characteristics, we first revisit the fundamental difference between the transient network and the covalent network in which we highlighted the transient feature of the cracks. We extend the current fracture criterion for crack initiation to a time-evolution scheme that allows one to track the nonsteady propagation of a crack. Through a combined experimental modeling effort, we show that fracture in transient networks is governed by two parameters: the Weissenberg number W0 that defines the history path of crack-driving force and an extension parameter Z that tells how far a crack can grow. We further use our understanding to explain the peculiar experimental observation. To further leverage on this understanding, we show that one can “program” a specimen’s crack extension dynamics by tuning the loading history.

AbstractFrom the field equations corresponding to a four-dimensional brane embedded in the five-dimensional spacetime of the Einstein–Chern–Simons theory for gravity, we find cosmological solutions that describe an accelerated expansion for a flat universe. Apart from a quintessence-type evolution scheme, we obtain a transient phantom evolution, which is not ruled out by the current observational data. Additionally, a bouncing solution is shown. The introduction of a kinetic term in the action shows a de Sitter behavior although the energy density is not constant. A quintessence behavior is also found. We conjecture on a possible geometric origin of dark energy coming from this action.

The present article describes opportunities for seeking the forms of housing finance, which closely conform to the current needs of the society. The author analyses evolutionary developments of the two main mortgage lending systems, provided either by savings-and-loans banks or by mortgage credit banks. Historical development of loan associations and thrift institutions for housing construction is also in focus of the study. It explores the stages of transferring or, that is also called in literature, “transplantation” of the institutions from the country of origin to other countries. As a consequence of that, the modern studies contain such terms as “donor country” and “recipient country” of the financial institution, which reflect the nature of the transferring (transplantation) process. The evolution scheme of the two main mortgage institutions is considered. Criteria and stages of the institutions’ development in different countries are identified and described in the text. The author also analyses the impact of environment on the institutions’ development, which are dependent on different initial conditions of the institute implementation as well as on social and socio-economic conditions existing in the countries, which choose a certain model of mortgage institutions. The author evaluates the opportunity and attempts to develop the German construction thrift institution model in comparison to classic American mortgage model. The opportunities for developing different forms of mortgage lending in the modern context are under review in the article. They will depend on criteria of difference that financial institutions present as well on conditions of their activity.

According to a basic model, the formation of the coastal barriers in the southwestern Baltic can be divided into four evolutionary stages which are characterized by different rates of sea-level rise and varying relations between sediment supply and accommodation space. This model is tested using the example of a strandplain of the island Usedom, along with a local sea-level curve that reflects even smaller fluctuations of the water table and a detailed chronostratigraphy based on OSL measurements that allows the correlation of the morphodynamics with specific climatic phases. The resulting evolution scheme generally confirms the basic model but the timing of the stages depends on the inherited relief and has to be adjusted locally. A comparison with barriers from the W and SW Baltic region shows that the development during the past 5000 years was controlled by climate fluctuations which caused minor variations of the rather stable sea level and consequential changes in sediment supply, accommodation space and foredune deposition. Progradation decline can mainly be related to cool and windy climate phases which centered around 4.2, 2.8, 1.1, and 0.3 ka b2k, while increasing progradation correlated with warmer climate around 3.5, 2.0, and 0.9 ka b2k. The climate warming and the increasing sea-level rise in the recent past, however, led to shrinking progradation rates and may indicate a critical point beyond which the main progradation trend of the past turns into erosion.

Starting from some ideas of H. Wolflin, O. Spengler pointed out an interesting problem of correlation between the evolution of art and social evolution. Regardless of the realness of their observations and conclusions, the idea of searching and analyzing such correlations seems to be very fruitful, and especially in the context of preliterate culture surviving due to archeology. This paper, drawing on the empirical archaeological data related to so called Incised and Stamped Pottery Cultures (ISPC) of Early Hallstatt period (XII-IX centuries BC) of Carpathian-Dniester region, aims to consider and verify the ideas of H. Wolflin and O. Spengler. For this purpose, and basing on the previously established by the author fivephase evolution scheme of ISPC of Carpathian-Dniester region (including such a key component of ISPC as Sakharna-Soloncheni culture), the dynamic of fine pottery ornamentation of these societies is analyzed. The analysis demonstrates that the evolution of pottery ornamentation of ISPC started from a minimal number of ornamental patterns and moved towards increasing their number. The parallel tendency was the increasing of the ornamented square of pots. These processes, as well as the innovativeness and openness to external influences, peaked in the fourth phase of Sakharna-Soloncheni culture; this phase was also the time of its greatest prosperity.
