Purpose While Millennials are the most educated generation to date, the unique contributions of higher education as a source of vocational anticipatory socialization (VAS) for organizational success remains unknown. Thus, this paper aims to establish a formative understanding from the student perspective of how faculty help ready the youngest of the Millennial generation for industry. This also allows for a comparison to their older counterparts. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected via an online mixed-methods survey with nearly 400 Millennials (n = 353). Findings Two prominent themes emerged including the professor as a socialization agent, where Millennials report learning from faculty as they are “managers of the classroom.” Additionally, the data indicate that many Millennials doubt the strength of the connection between higher education and career socialization, though a smaller cohort reported using the university environment, and more specifically, their interactions with faculty to practice and refine future workplace behaviors. In contrast to parents and peers, faculty nearly always ranked as the lowest source of VAS information. Research limitations/implications Some Millennials demonstrate a keen awareness of the importance of relational communication, boding especially well for their relationships with future managers and for their leadership skills as they transition into positions of management. Practical implications Faculty should consider how to address three concerns: a potential lack of perceived relevance, workplace inferences based on college experiences and leveraging interactions to strengthen student practice of professional communication. Managers would be well served to anticipate how to address newcomers’ expectations that stem from interpreting communicative experiences in the college classroom as analogous to workplace interactions. Originality/value The data indicate that traditional ideas about the impact of vocational anticipatory socialization sources and messaging need to be rethought, and instead, it appears some of the most fruitful socialization experiences faculty can provide is in giving students space and opportunity to practice and refine future workplace behaviors.

This study analyzes the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and professional skepticism, between professional skepticism and anticipatory socialization, and the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and anticipatory socialization using professional skepticism as the mediating variable. The research data were obtained from 187 questionnaires distributed to accounting students. The results in this study prove that there is a positive relationship between the characteristics of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness, on anticipatory socialization. Meanwhile, the character of neuroticism has no relationship with anticipatory socialization. In addition, it was also found that there was an indirect, positive relationship between neuroticism, extraversion and conscientiousness, and anticipatory socialization through professional skepticism. This research is expected to provide insights for accounting students as they start preparing to become good auditors while in college.

This study aims to look at the effect of professional commitment and anticipatory socialization of bidikmisi and non-bidikmisi accounting students at Malikussaleh University on its relationship with whistleblowing. In addition, this study also aims to see differences in the level of professional commitment and anticipatory socialization between students of Bidikmisi and non-Bidikmisi Accounting at Malikussaleh University. Sampling in this study using the Slovin formula is a sampling technique that uses a critical value or accuracy limit of 0.1, so that the sample obtained in this study amounted to 90 respondents from a total population of 286 students. This study uses multiple regression analysis techniques with hypothesis testing using the SPSS 22 program. The results show that professional commitment and anticipatory socialization affect whistleblowing, as well as differences in the level of professional commitment and anticipatory socialization between bidikmisi and non-bidikmisi students at Malikussaleh University

From February to December 2020, the Government of Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) implemented strict health measures to control the pandemic caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19). Among several other developments, universities in the territory turned to online teaching, which lasted for the entire 2020 spring semester. This paper aims to identify the empirical lessons learned from that period, from both pedagogic and governance points of view, keeping in mind the impact of technological, human-related, and governance challenges. The sustainability of online teaching for a limited period of time was directly related to the effectiveness (and speed) of external coordination (involving the relevant governmental departments) and internal commitment within the university. Despite the relative academic success and the technological transformation, one of the key lessons learned is that online teaching cannot effectively contribute to the processes of secondary and anticipatory socialization in the same way as in-person learning. Therefore, online teaching is not sustainable as a stand-alone tool in higher education. It fails to deliver secondary and anticipatory socialization particularly with regard to the sense of connection and togetherness. Clearly, the current model of academic governance has not been designed to face this type of challenge

The corruption in Indonesia is one of the biggest problems the government and the business must face. Employee in the entity may provide one of the solutions for this problem. They may do the whistleblowing when they know that there is violation in the entity. Professional commitment and anticipatory socialization are the factors to foster whistleblowing. This study aims to obtain empirical evidence regarding the impact of professional commitment and anticipatory socialization toward whistleblowing intention. 155 eligible accounting students are taken as subjects for this study. The questionnaire is disseminated electronically to the sample. As a result, professional commitment affects whistleblowing intentions of accounting students. Furthermore, male who profess professional commitment will likely do the action of whistleblowing compare to female. On the other hand, there is no statistical evidence found to prove that anticipatory socialization affects the intention to do whistleblowing. Consequently, the system of the company must facilitate the improvement of professional commitment so it may foster the intention of the employees to whistleblow. Therefore, manager should pay attention to degree of the professional commitment of the employees.
