Dispersing nanoparticles and increasing the photosensitizer concentration have been regarded as effective approaches for improving the performance of a holographic storage material. In this paper, SiO2 nanoparticle (NP)-dispersed PQ/PMMA nanocomposite material (SiO2 NP-PQ/PMMA) with a high PQ doping concentration was prepared. By introducing the co-monomer methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) that comes from an SiO2 NP colloidal solution, the concentration of PQ in the system increased to 1.2 wt %. We investigated the performance of polarization holographic recordings in both traditional PQ/PMMA and nanocomposite material SiO2 NP-PQ/PMMA with the orthogonally polarized signal and reference waves. With the dispersion of the SiO2 NPs colloidal solution and the increase in the PQ concentration, diffraction efficiency and photoinduced birefringence were multiplied. In addition, high-quality holographic image reconstruction was achieved by our homemade material.

The underlying mechanisms that rule the high performance of optical birefringence in V-shaped azo/PMMA films were elucidated through the ground-state transient absorption technique and quantum chemical calculations.

This paper investigates the photoinduced change of refractive index in dye (methyl red, MR)-doped blue phase (DDBP) cells by illumination of a pump beam. Through excitation of light irradiation with proper photon energy, MR can transform from trans-state to cis-state and successively diffuse and anisotropically adsorb on the inner glass substrate of the DDBP cell along the direction perpendicular to the polarisation of the pump beam. The adsorbed MR molecules can effectively rotate the orientation of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules and thereby modulate the effective refractive index of the DDBP cell. The SEM images of the adsorbed regions of the illuminated DDBP samples were also taken for discussing the relation between the pump intensity and the photoinduced birefringence.

A series of polymers containing nunchaku-like unit with an azo chromophore and a mesogen group was successfully prepared and photoinduced anisotropy of the obtained polymers was minutely investigated. Firstly, monomers containing nunchaku-like unit with an azo chromophore and a mesogen group linked by flexible group were synthesized. The structure of the monomers was confirmed via NMR COSY spectra. Subsequently, the obtained monomers were polymerized into corresponding polymers through RAFT polymerization. The prepared polymer samples were characterized through NMR, FTIR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and UV-vis testing while the thermal properties of the samples were investigated through differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements. The photoinduced isomerization of the polymers, which was researched in situ via measuring UV-vis spectra of the polymer solutions and spin-coated films under irradiation with 450 nm light or putting in darkness, demonstrated the rapid trans-cis-trans isomerization of the polymers. When irradiated with a linearly polarized light, significant photoinduced birefringence and dichroism were observed, suggesting photoinduced isomerization of azobenzene can drive orientation of mesogen in the system. This study blazes a way to design the optical materials with light-controllable birefringence and dichroism.

Abstract We present a study of the photoinduced birefringence in nanocomposite films of the azopolymer PAZO (poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo)benzenesulfon amido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]) doped with TiO2 nanoparticles (NP) with different concentrations before and after thermal annealing. The NP represent nanopowder with primary particle size 21 nm. The concentration of the NP was varied from 0% (non-doped azopolymer film) to 5 wt%. The thermal process, applied to the nanocomposite films, includes 1 h heating at 200°C. Previous studies of PAZO show that the polymer is stable up to 270°C. We study the dependence of the maximal birefringence induced with He-Cd laser (λ= 442 nm) on the concentration of the TiO2 NP in the azopolymer thin films as well as thermal effect on the absorbance spectra of the thin films. As indicated by our results, the birefringence is higher for the thermally annealed samples. An increase of the photoinduced birefringence is also observed for the nanocomposite layers with 1% NP for the non-annealed films, and with 2% NP for the annealed films.
