Prosthetic and orthotic parts, such as prosthetic socket and inner sides of orthoses, are often in contact with human skin, giving bacteria the capability to adhere and form biofilms on the materials of those parts which can further cause infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of bacterial adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis on twelve different prosthetic and orthotic material surfaces and how roughness, hydrophobicity, and surface charge of this materials affect the adhesion. The roughness, contact angle, zeta potential of material surfaces, and adhesion rate of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were measured on all twelve prosthetic and orthotic materials, i.e., poly(methyl methacrylate), thermoplastic elastomer, three types of ethylene polyvinyl acetates (pure, with low-density polyethylene and with silver nanoparticles), silicone, closed-cell polyethylene foams with and without nanoparticles, thermo and natural cork, and artificial and natural leather. The greatest degree of adhesion was measured on both closed-cell polyethylene foams, followed by artificial thermo cork and leather. The lowest adhesion extent was observed on ethylene-vinyl acetate. The bacterial adhesion extent increases with the increasing surface roughness. Smaller deviations of this rule are the result of the surface’s hydrophobicity and charge.

Volatile and non-volatile chemical profiles, free and total SO2 and dissolved oxygen content were studied in three red (Merlot, Lagrein red, St. Magdalener) and one rosé (Lagrein rosé) wine after 30 months of storage in bottles. Each wine was sealed with closures made of a ‘blend’ (B) of natural cork microgranules and polymers without glue and was compared with wines closed with other types of corks (C; a technical cork 1 + 1, or an agglomerated natural cork or a natural one-piece cork). Glutathionyl caftaric acid (GRP) was inversely correlated with total SO2 content and was higher in all three red wines closed with B compared to C, whereas epicatechin was higher in three wines closed with C compared to B. Three volatile compounds formed by fermentation (ethyl butanoate, isoamyl lactate, and octanol) were inversely correlated with both free and total SO2. In terms of their volatile profiles, ethyl octanoate and 2,3-butanediol were significantly higher in the Lagrein red wines closed with C closures, whereas no significant difference was observed in Merlot, Lagrein rosé and St. Magdalener wines. Small differences in some phenolic compounds due to the type of closure were found: GRP, syringic acid, (+)-catechin, and (−)-epicatechin differentiated the Merlot wines closed with B from the C closures. Protocatechuic acid and GRP levels differentiated the Lagrein red wines according to their closure type, whereas only (−)-epicatechin differentiated the Lagrein rosé wines. GRP, caffeic acid, (−)-epicatechin, and anthocyanin content differentiated the St. Magdalener wines according to their closure type. Even though St. Magdalener and Lagrein rosé closed with C could be distinguished from those closed with B by using the (sensory) triangle test (α = 0.05), these differences appeared to be relative as it did not include all the wines in a systematic manner.

Abstract Natural cork (NC) and its agglomerates are renewable materials that could be effective substitutes for non-renewable foams, such as expanded polystyrene (EPS), in the cores of sandwich materials. Although many existing studies have analysed the behaviour of different cork agglomerates under tensile, compression, or shear loads, no studies to date have simultaneously analysed the behaviour of multiple cork materials under all these loads. Therefore, in this study, the behaviour of NC and five cork agglomerates were analysed under tensile, compression and shear loads, and the mechanical and specific properties and the shape of the stress–strain curves were compared with those obtained for five EPS counterparts to analyse the relationship between the mechanical behaviour of the core and the main failure modes of the sandwich. Although EPS exhibited higher specific properties, NC exhibited higher mechanical properties under all the loads. The agglomerates all exhibited lower mechanical properties except for shear strain. Additionally, because no specific standards were available for testing cork products, slightly modified standards for testing other materials were adopted.

A characterization of the sound absorption of a sustainable material with scarce current use such as natural virgin cork is presented in this paper in order to explore further possible applications in the design of acoustic solutions. Different samples of virgin cork not bonded and various decorative panel formats were tested under random sound incidence conditions in a standardized reverberation chamber. The samples in which the outer bark of the cork was facing upwards showed a better behavior as an acoustic absorber, with sound absorption coefficient values generally greater than 0.6 for frequency bands between 1 and 5 kHz. The results obtained were compared with samples of some recycled materials available in the scientific literature, such as sheep wool and PET.
