AbstractAs standard concepts for precision positioning within a machine reach their limits with increasing measurement volumes, inverse concepts are a promising approach for addressing this problem. The inverse principle entails other limitations, as for high-precision positioning of a sensor head within a large measurement volume, three four-beam interferometers are required in order to measure all necessary translations and rotations of the sensor head and reconstruct the topography of the reference system consisting of fixed mirrors in the x-, y-, and z-directions. We present the principle of a passive heterodyne laser interferometer with consequently separated beam paths for the individual heterodyne frequencies. The beam path design is illustrated and described, as well as the design of the signal-processing and evaluation algorithm, which is implemented using a System-On-a-Chip with an integrated FPGA, CPU, and A/D converters. A streamlined bench-top optical assembly was set up and measurements were carried out to investigate the remaining non-linearities. Additionally, reference measurements with a commercial homodyne interferometer were executed.

The discrimination between earthquakes and explosions is a serious issue in seismic signal analysis. This paper proposes a seismic discrimination method using support vector machine (SVM), wherein the amplitudes of the P-wave and the S-wave of the seismic signals are selected as feature vectors. Furthermore, to improve the seismic discrimination performance using a heterodyne laser interferometer for seismic wave detection, the Hough transform is applied as a compensation method for the periodic nonlinearity error caused by the frequency-mixing in the laser interferometric seismometer. In the testing procedure, different kernel functions of SVM are used to discriminate between earthquakes and explosions. The outstanding performance of a laser interferometer and Hough transform method for precision seismic measurement and nonlinearity error compensation is confirmed through some experiments using a linear vibration stage. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed discrimination method using a heterodyne laser interferometer is verified through a receiver operating characteristic curve and other performance indices obtained from practical experiments.

In this paper, a heterodyne laser interferometer, which is used as a sensor for high-precision displacement measurement, is introduced to measure ground vibration and seismic waves as a seismometer. The seismic wave is measured precisely through the displacement variation obtained by the heterodyne laser interferometer. The earthquake magnitude is estimated using only the P-wave magnitudes for the first 3 s through the total noise enhanced optimization (TNEO) model. We use data from southern California to investigate the relationship between peak acceleration amplitude ( P d ) and the earthquake magnitude ( M g ). For precise prediction of the earthquake magnitude using only the P d value, the TNEO model derives the relation equation between P d and the magnitude, considering the noise present in each measured seismic data. The optimal solution is obtained from the TNEO model based objective function. We proved the performance of the proposed method through simulation and experimental results.

The phase quadrature measurement method is capable of measuring nonlinearity in heterodyne laser interferometers with picometer accuracy whereas it cannot be applied in the new kind of heterodyne interferometers with bidirectional Doppler frequency shift especially in the condition of non-uniform motion of the target. To solve this problem, a novel measurement method of nonlinearity is proposed in this paper. By employing double-channel quadrature demodulation and substituting the external reference signal with internal ones, this method is free from the type of heterodyne laser interferometer and the motion state of the target. For phase demodulation, the phase differential algorithm is utilized to improve the computing efficiency. Experimental verification is carried out and the results indicate that the proposed measurement method achieves accuracy better than 2 pm.

We propose a seismic wave detection method in the frequency domain using a heterodyne laser interferometer, which is used in ultraprecision fields as a displacement measurement device. In seismology, it is important to accurately measure seismic waves. To overcome the limited frequency range and low resolution of accelerometers and velocimeters and to enhance the precision of seismic data analysis, we use the heterodyne laser interferometer as a seismic detection apparatus. We apply the data fusion algorithm with the adaptive standard deviation ratio (ς) derived from the neural network to improve the laser interferometer’s measurement precision. Moreover, by using the interferometric characteristics, we analyze the seismic data in the frequency domain. To determine the location of the epicenter from the body wave propagation analysis, we apply the STA/LTA algorithm to the measurement data. The effectiveness of the proposed laser interferometric seismometer is shown through experiments to locate the precise epicenter.
