The granular column collapse is a benchmark configuration for the study of granular flows in dry, saturated, and submerged conditions. The collapse sequence and resultant mobility is acknowledged to be controlled by the column aspect ratio, while grain properties define the relative transition of each stage. Grain shape effects are found to modify the global shear resistance of granular media, with a strong and coupled interaction when interacting with a fluid. In this work, we present the first steps towards the study of grain shape effects in a column collapse when interacting with an ambient fluid. For this purpose, we use a planar configuration and explore the collapse of a column consisting of rod-like grains and study the initial and after collapse grain orientations. On it, the mobilized grains deposit in a preferential horizontal orientation, but further experiments are required to confirm if a nematic configuration can be achieved.

Pattern analysis is a well-established topic in team sports performance analysis, and is usually centered on the analysis of passing sequences. Taking a Bayesian approach to the study of these interactions, this work presents novel entropy mathematical models for Markov chain-based pattern analysis in team sports networks, with Relative Transition Entropy and Network Transition Entropy applied to both passing and reception patterns. To demonstrate their applicability, these mathematical models were used in a case study in football—the 2016/2017 Champions League Final, where both teams were analyzed. The results show that the winning team, Real Madrid, presented greater values for both individual and team transition entropies, which indicate that greater levels of unpredictability may bring teams closer to victory. In conclusion, these metrics may provide information to game analysts, allowing them to provide coaches with accurate and timely information about the key players of the game.

This chapter examines which capabilities of interactive TV can be used to enhance the foreign languages learning experience in children and adolescents. In modern English language courses, interactive whiteboard software and interactive e-books provide several multimedia capabilities, whose relative transition in their iTV version can be of great benefit for students. The possible changes that the educational process may undergo due to the use of interactive TV in the light of the blended learning model, as well as the expected benefits of this transition are discussed in this chapter. It also examines how beneficial the use of iTV functions as a support process in the traditional classroom model would be and if it is feasible to use it autonomously entirely for the learning process, considering the specificities of the age group under consideration.

ABSTRACTThe ability to precisely describe and numerically evaluate organismal phenotypes is a prerequisite for addressing most questions in evolutionary biology and ecology. The quantification and comparison of behavior, loosely defined as an external response to stimuli, is particularly challenging because the myriad axes of variation that exist make comparisons, both within and among species, difficult. Such evaluations often boil down to comparisons of time-budgets (e.g. relative investment in courtship displays) or probabilities (e.g. likelihood of engaging in a class of behaviors in a particular context) – which we refer to as behavioral strategies. A focus on variation in behavioral strategies underlies most research in evolutionary and ecological studies of behavior. Equally important, however, is perhaps the question of ‘how’ animals are actually performing the complex motor sequences that comprise behaviors (i.e. behavioral execution). What are the patterns of movement, the relative transition rates, and kinematics underlying the behaviors exhibited in particular contexts? Understanding how behavioral execution differs among individuals, populations, and species has the potential to provide new insights into the factors shaping variation in behavior and the processes shaping behavioral evolution at different scales. Here, we propose a broad framework for comparing behavioral execution (RAD-behavior: recombining atomized, discretized behavior) that leverages string-matching/bioinformatic tools to understand phenotypic variation in behavioral execution and which holds the potential to yield novel insights about the evolutionary ecology of behavior at multiple scales.

Our paper addresses the process of intergenerational mobility in terms oftransfers of educational advantages and disadvantages trough parentalwealth in Germany, where in contrast to the USA, education at any level islargely free of tuitions costs. Based on the unique features of wealth andfollowing the logic of subjective expected utility theory, we propose and, asone of the very first studies, empirically test two causal mechanismsunderlying the parental wealth-educational decisions relationship:“disadvantage compensation” and “educational demotivation”. We apply amultinomial logit model for discrete-time event history analysis, allowingus to estimate the relative transition risk ratio of children with universityentrance qualification to make the transition from upper secondary schoolto 1) higher education, 2) the labor market or vocational training or 3) tonot transition at all. The relative transition risk ratio is measured as afunction of the relative position of the parents in the distribution of netwealth. Our analyses, based on data from the German Socio-EconomicPanel Study (SOEP), reveal that children with wealthy parents are morelikely to decide for higher education, even if they are faced with lowcognitive abilities (i.e., disadvantage compensation).

The decay of [Formula: see text]Pr produced by activation with a clinical LINAC was investigated. The sample was counted by a HPGe detector with 40% relative efficiency. Transitions created by beta decay of [Formula: see text]Pr were observed and corresponding energies lines and relative transition strengths were measured. In addition, half-life of [Formula: see text]Pr was obtained at 3.38 ± 0.06 min. The experimental results fitted nicely to the existing energy levels scheme of [Formula: see text]Pr. Notably, all results for transition energies are more accurate than the literature values, while the half-life and transition strengths showed accuracy similar to that of the literature.

Modern diagnostic medical laboratories personnel should be an ideal combination of highly qualified scientists and technologists who use innovative analytical equipment to provide high quality diagnostic services to mankind. A well-designed and a well-implemented Quality Management System (QMS) according to the ISO 15189 requirements is regarded as a prerequisite that will ensure that a cytopathology laboratory is capable enough to provide precise and credible results. The authors present their knowledge on the implementation of such a QMS in cytopathology laboratories and emphasize the most crucial technical parameters that should be considered when advancing from ISO 15189:2007 to the latest ISO 15189:2012. Furthermore, helpful advice and pointers that could accommodate relative transition are included. Finally, potential issues related to the laboratory's implementation of ISO 15189:2012 and a mobile technology application for better personnel management are also depicted.
