Purpose: We aimed to determine the amount of some toxic elements in three organs of Hilsa shad, focusing on the possible exposure to human health through Hilsa consumption. This study was designed to determine the concentration of seven toxic trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in three distinct organs (n = 21) (muscle, liver, and gills) of Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) fish collected from the Bangladeshi coastal area. The samples were digested following a microwave digestion. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer was used as analytical instrument. Estimated daily intakes (EDI) and target cancer risk (TR) were used to evaluate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk. Results: The mean concentrations (mg/kg-wet weight) of toxic elements in different organs of T. ilisha were determined as follows: in muscle, As (4.05), Cd (0.09), Cr (0.12), Cu (0.77), Ni (0.26), Pb (0.20), and Zn (10.64); in liver, As (2.83), Cd (0.84), Cr (0.18), Cu (6.17), Ni (0.55), Pb (0.23), and Zn (30.16) and in gills, As (3.45), Cd (0.05), Cr (0.08), Cu (1.06), Ni (0.51), Pb (0.78), and Zn (35.21). The liver showed higher concentrations of most elements than that of muscle except for As. Concentration of As, Cd, and Pb in the fish were found above the food safety guidelines, while other trace element concentrations were below the permissible range for human consumption. According to EDI and TR values, there were carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks from exposure to total As concentration from Hilsa fish consumption. Conclusion: This study suggests that the toxic trace elements contamination levels in Hilsa fish from Bangladesh’s coastal area need to be monitored on a systematic and regular basis to ensure the safety of this food item for human consumption.

The finding of larval and juvenile specimens from the Omani coast of the Arabian Sea and the Arabian Gulf waters of Saudi Arabia and Iraq is reported for the first time. Based on available information, one larva was a leptocephalus, Conger sp. (family Congridae) and one larva of an acronurus stage belonging to the genus Acanthurus (family Acanthuridae). Also juveniles of the following families are included in the present study: Clupeidae – Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822) and Nematalosa sp.; Dactylopteridae – Dactyloptena orientalis (Cuvier, 1829); Gobiidae – Acentrogobius sp.; Bothidae – Arnoglossus aspilos (Bleeker, 1851); Scatophagidae – Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus, 1766); Sparidae – Acanthopagrus arabicus Iwatsuki, 2013 and Sparidentex hasta (Valenciennes, 1830); Tetraodontidae – Lagocephalus sp. The discovery of the barred rather than spotted juveniles of S. argus collected from pure freshwater environment of the Shatt al-Arab River, Basrah, Iraq was remarkable; it raises questions whether there is more than one species within the nominal S. argus. For both larvae and juveniles of bothid flounders, the olfactory organ is a useful character for the examination of the developmental stage of the metamorphosing specimens. The occurrence of the different early life history stages of fishes from the three Arabian countries shows the needs them to be studied further so that inferences about the areas and periods of spawning and development of these fishes can be made more accurately.

Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822), commonly known as Hilsha shad is a valuable and highly acceptable species in terms of their high flavored properties. Hilsha shad has striking morpho-genetical adaptation to heterogeneous habitats across their migratory routes. Cytogenetic analysis demonstrates the changes in chromosomes. But none was focused on the cytogenetic analysis of T. ilisha in Bangladesh. T. ilisha was found to possess 2n = 42 number of chromosomes along with a karyotype formula: 1M + 31m + 8sm + 2st using giemsa staining technique. The results demonstrated ‘diffuse type of interphase nuclei, co-existence of continuous type and interstitial type of prophase chromosomes respectively. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were determined cytologically. The presence of diverse types of chromosomes based on centromeric position, gradual decrease in total haploid chromosome complement, mean centromeric asymmetry, coefficient of variation of chromosome length and Stebbins’s classification highlighted its asymmetry in karyotype with advance nature. Therefore, the elemental karyological data will offer information for the proper identification, cytotaxonomical classification, expanding productivity and preservation of genetic resources ofT. ilisha. In recent years, attaining gonadal maturation in smaller Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) has become a burning issue for Hilsa fishery of Bangladesh. Causes of early maturation are not yet clearly understood. Along with environmental parameters, genetic differentiation within the population was hypothesized as the main driver, and therefore, assessing the correlation between gonadosomatic index (GSI) and environmental factors and analyzing genetic diversity were set as objectives of the present study. To address these complex issues, six diverse habitats across Bangladesh were chosen for Hilsa sample collection. For GSI, gonad was dissected from fresh fish and preserved in Bouin’s fluid for histological observation. Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity were also assessed. 35 fish from each habitat were used to extract and amplify DNA through the PCR technique, and genetic diversity was examined. Further, to draw a firm conclusion, the phylogenetic tree of the Hilsa population was developed by the unweighted pair-group method of arithmetic mean method based on the Cyt b gene of mitochondrial DNA. Results of GSI studies revealed that peak spawning months of T. ilisha were in October and February, where October showed the highest values in all six habitats. Histological examination showed different stages of gonadal development in different sizes and ages of Hilsa. Among all sampling sites, no statistical difference was observed for GSI value; however, smaller sized and aged Hilsa being ripped were evident in Gaglajur Haor and Kali River. Among the observed water quality parameters, temperature correlated with GSI strongly. Increased GSI was observed with temperature augmentation from downstream to upper stream, irrespective of body size and age. A perplex correlation between dissolved oxygen of observed habitats and GSI was executed. Other physico-chemical parameters viz. pH and salinity exhibited weak and moderate positive association with the GSI, respectively. Haplotype diversity of mitochondrial DNA divided the Hilsa population into three possible sub-populations, where the most distant group (Gaglajur Haor and Kali River) was subjected to early gonadal maturity. Results of this study make clear conclusions regarding the role of environmental and genetic factors on early gonadal maturations, pointing fingers at the curse of climate change and anthropogenic stressors for the migration of the Hilsa fishery of Bangladesh.

This study deals with the in-vitro experimental analysis of different generic antibiotics and season based honey, sensitivity against isolated bacteria. The characterization of  bacteria isolated from the frozen hilsa is done through various biochemical reactions The antibacterial sensitivity  of honey and antibiotics are evaluated through zone of inhibition analysis of bacterial colony. So, it is obvious that this experiment provides providential values for future research including food value analysis.

Despite different approaches used to assign the risk scores for missing information in productivity susceptibility analysis (PSA)—a widely used semi-quantitative risk assessment tool for target and non-target fisheries stocks—for the selected attributes of a given species, no formal comparison has been made between scoring approaches in terms of how well they can predict species vulnerability. The present study evaluated the PSA findings of 21 bycatch stocks of the Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) gillnet fishery of Bangladesh using two different scoring approaches (the conservative scoring approach, CSA; and the alternative scoring approach, ASA) to determine the most reliable approach to minimize false estimates of species vulnerability. Our analysis revealed that the V scores increased by 0.0−0.20 with a mean value of 0.09 for 21 selected bycatches when CSA was applied. The inconsistency between the vulnerability (V)-score-suggested fishing status (V ≤ 1.8 = underfishing, V > 1.8 = overfishing) and the fishing status defined by exploitation rate (E > 0.5 = overfishing, E < 0.5 = underfishing) were 38.1% and 19.0% under CSA and ASA, respectively. Likewise, the consistency between the V-score-suggested fishing status and fishers’ perceived catch trends was found to be higher when using ASA than when using CSA. Our analysis suggests that CSA could overestimate species vulnerability. Therefore, ASA is more reliable than CSA in PSA, which may increase the confidence of fisheries stakeholders in PSA.
