Classroom communication is increasingly accepted as multimodal, through the orchestrated use of different semiotic modes, resources, and systems. There is growing interest in examining the meaning-making potential of other modes (e.g., gestural, visual, kinesthetic) beyond the semiotic mode of language, in classroom communication and in student reasoning in science. In this paper, we explore the use of a multi-layered analytical framework in an investigation of student reasoning during an open inquiry into the physical phenomenon of dissolving in a primary classroom. The 24 students, who worked in pairs, were video recorded in a facility purposefully designed to capture their verbal and non-verbal interactions during the science session. By employing a multi-layered analytical framework, we were able to identify the interplays between the different semiotic modes and the level of reasoning undertaken by the students as they worked through the tasks. This analytical process uncovered a variety of ways in which the students negotiated ideas and coordinated semiotic resources in their exploration of dissolving. This paper highlights the affordances and challenges of this multi-layered analytical framework for identifying the dynamic inter-relationships between different modes that the students drew on to grapple with the complexity of the physical phenomenon of dissolving.

Background: In 2010, students of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta who were graduated from the competency-based curriculum (CBC) in pre-clinical phase have entered the teaching hospital for their clinical rotation phases, while students who were graduated from the conventional curriculum still learned in the same teaching hospital. This study aimed to evaluate the students competencies during the clinical rotation phase, between students who were graduated from CBC compare to students who were graduated from conventional curriculum.Method: This was a cross sectional study using 4-point Likert scale questionnaire. The population of this study were all students in clinical stage at Gatot Soebroto Hospital. The sample were 40 students from each group. Data was collected from December 2010 to January 2011. Chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Results: This study showed that the students competencies in CBC curriculum were higher in CBC significant correlation between pre-clinical curriculum with student’s competencies in communication and behavior (p= 0.006), science session and scientific report (p=0.000), and physical examination (p=0.000).However, it is found that there were no correlation between pre-clinical curriculum with student’s competencies in history taking, laboratory examination, making a diagnosis, and patient management (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Student competencies higher in CBC curriculum compare to conventional curriculum, and particularly significant in physical examination, communication & behavior and scientific report & science session competencies.

Abstract This commentary highlights some of the most important discoveries in the field of nuclear receptor control of metabolism that occurred over the past year (2009 to 2010). As might be expected in a field that encompasses several hundred active laboratories, the task of providing a balanced look at these discoveries was daunting. Thus, to help make the selection of these discoveries, a small panel of colleagues was recruited to help. After selecting the top candidate discoveries from a Google search and a PubMed search, the panel was asked to rank them. These final selections were presented at “The Year In Basic Science Session” of the Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society, ENDO 2010, the highlights of which are reproduced in this article.

Division VII provides a forum for astronomers studying the Milky Way Galaxy and its constituents. Several meetings directly relevant to his subject were held at the General Assembly in Rio: IAU Symp. 262 Stellar Populations, IAU Symp. 265 Chemical Abundances in the Universe, IAU Symp. 266 Star Clusters, Joint Discussion 5 Modeling the Milky Way in the Era of Gaia, and Special Session 5 The Galactic Plane. Division VII therefore did not organize a separate science session at Rio, but business meetings were held for both the Division and for Commissions 33 and 37.

This article is written in French. The article is a presentation of a lecture delivered on the International Science Session “Ethics, Finances and Responsibility”, which took place on October the 3rd and 4th, 2008 in Chateau de Bossey near Geneva. Searching for sources of ethic thoughts connected with difficult moral problems of the contemporary world, the author deals with the oldest, well known writing about the ethical practice of medicine, the Hippocratic Oath. Presenting the plenteous, philosophical- ethical contents of the Oath and the history of the growth on it the Hippocratic tradition enriched in experience of the Christian anthropology, the author identifies its norms and rules. Unfortunately, since the Enlightenment times, especially the nineteenth century Positivism the tradition has been seriously disturbed. Together with the questioning the Aristotelean-Thomism anthropology, the doubts appeared related to the matter of protection of life since the conception until the natural death. Whereas new, legal regulations connected with the progress of in medical studies request deep anthropological and philosophical reflection, which would bring back the importance of the forgotten Hippocratic tradition, where in the center of medical actions is a man who needs help.
