Dopaminergic transporter (DAT) imaging with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is used to diagnose Parkinson’s disease and to differentiate it from other neurodegenerative disorders without presynaptic dopaminergic dysfunction. The radioiodinated tropane alkaloids [123I]FP-CIT and [123I]β-CIT enable the evaluation of the integrity of DATs. Commonly, the labeling of these compounds is performed by electrophilic substitution of the alkylstannylated precursors with radioactive iodine and following purification by HPLC or solid phase extraction (SPE). This work presents the first radioiodination of β-CIT and FP-CIT with no carrier added [131I]NaI on a Scintomics GRP synthesis module. Free iodine-131 and impurities were removed by SPE over a C-18 Sep-Pak cartridge. We achieved a radiochemical yield of >75% and a radiochemical purity of >98% with both compounds. Our development of an automated synthesis on a commercially available synthesizer ensures robust and efficient labeling of [131I]FP-CIT and [131I]β-CIT starting with low concentrated radioiodine.

Iodine has been widely used as an effective disinfectant with broad-spectrum antimicrobial potency. However, the application of iodine in an antibacterial polymer remains challenging due to its volatile nature and poor solubility. Herein, iodine immobilized UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework (MOF) (UiO66@I2) with a high loading capacity was synthesized and used as an effective antibacterial additive for poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). An orthogonal design approach was used to achieve the optimal experiments’ conditions in iodine adsorption. UiO66@I2 nanoparticles were added to the PCL matrix under ultrasonic vibration and evaporated the solvent to get a polymer membrane. The composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, and static contact angle analysis. UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles have a high iodine loading capacity, up to 18 wt.%. The concentration of iodine is the most important factor in iodine adsorption. Adding 0.5 wt.% or 1.0 wt.% (equivalent iodine content) of UiO66@I2 to the PCL matrix had no influence on the structure of PCL but reduces the static water angle. The PCL composites showed strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In contrast, the same content of free iodine/PCL composites had no antibacterial activity. The difference in the antibacterial performance was due to the different iodine contents in the polymer composites. It was found that MOF nanoparticles could retain most of the iodine during the sample preparation and storage, while there was few iodine left in the free iodine/PCL composites. This study offers a common and simple way to immobilize iodine and prepare antibacterial polymers with low antiseptic content that would reduce the influence of an additive on polymers’ physical properties.

X-ray contrast media have been reported to have inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Despite its potentially beneficial effect on patients, these features of contrast media have received relatively little attention in the medical literature in the past decades. The aim of this review is to evaluate the literature concerning the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects of X-ray contrast media, specifically if there is a known difference concerning these effects between ionic and non-ionic contrast media. Systematic literature review was performed for the years of publication between 1911 and 2019. Since the publication of Grossich in 1911, the effect of iodine on the treatment of superficial infections in surgical procedures has been established clinical knowledge. Bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of ionic X-ray contrast media are well established. However, non-ionic contrast agents have been the subject of little research in this respect. In past decades, the hypothesis emerged in the literature that mainly the concentration of free iodine might be responsible for any bacteriostatic or bactericidal effect of ionic X-ray contrast media. Nowadays, however, only non-ionic contrast media are used. The question regarding the mechanism and magnitude of bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects of these, non-ionic contrast media, could not be answered conclusively from this review. Non-ionic contrast media could be used intentionally when a local antibacterial effect is intended (e.g. in percutaneous abscess drainage), as well as to reduce the overall dose of antibiotics administered to a patient. Thus, this question remains relevant and might constitute the area of future research.

Abstract The evaporation of iodine containing species from tellurium has been investigated together with their adsorption behavior on a fused silica surface. In inert gas, the formation of two species was observed with adsorption enthalpies of around − 90 to − 100 and − 110 to − 120 kJ/mol, respectively. For reducing environments, a single species identified as monatomic iodine was observed with an adsorption enthalpy around − 95 kJ/mol. In oxidizing conditions, species with low adsorption enthalpies ranging from − 65 to − 80 kJ/mol were observed. Presumably, these are iodine oxides as well as oxo-acids of iodine (HIOx). The results of the thermochromatography experiments performed here prove the usefulness of the employed production method for carrier-free iodine isotopes and enhance the understanding of the evaporation and deposition behavior of iodine under various chemical conditions.

Antimicrobial agents containing symmetrical triiodides complexes with halogen bonding may release free iodine molecules in a controlled manner. This happens due to interactions with the plasma membrane of microorganisms which lead to changes in the structure of the triiodide anion. To verify this hypothesis, the triiodide complex [Na(12-crown-4)2]I3 was prepared by an optimized one-pot synthesis and tested against 18 clinical isolates, 10 reference strains of pathogens and five antibiotics. The antimicrobial activities of this symmetrical triiodide complex were determined by zone of inhibition plate studies through disc- and agar-well-diffusion methods. The triiodide complex proved to be a broad spectrum microbicidal agent. The biological activities were related to the calculated partition coefficient (octanol/water). The microstructural analysis of SEM and EDS undermined the purity of the triiodide complex. The anionic structure consists of isolated, symmetrical triiodide anions [I-I-I]- with halogen bonding. Computational methods were used to calculate the energy required to release iodine from [I-I-I]- and [I-I···I]-. The halogen bonding in the triiodide ion reduces the antibacterial activities in comparison to the inhibitory actions of pure iodine but increases the long term stability of [Na(12-crown-4)2]I3.
