This paper discusses the significance of a fragment of stone sculpture built into the north wall of the churchyard at Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight. The sculpture depicts an open right hand that is larger than life-sized and is probably of late Anglo-Saxon date. The size and character of the sculpture favours a manus dei (hand of God), forming the upper element of a large rood assemblage. The authors consider allied sculpture in which such a hand appears on Anglo-Saxon grave markers and in similar low relief depictions where Christ is figured on the Cross. At Carisbrooke, this architectural sculpture would have formed a significant feature of an Anglo-Saxon minster church that was rebuilt in the early Norman period. The siting of this building and the extent of its parochia is briefly considered. Supplementary material reviews the probable significance of the sculptural use of Quarr stone at Carisbrooke and elsewhere.

A man's use of words is commonly taken as a measure of his knowledge and even of his intelligence. Creativity is one of the distinctive properties of human language, it is the ability to produce and understand new forms in a language. Creativity is mostly crystallized when it comes to words formation in general and internet created words in particular. It is apparent in speakers’ lexical knowledge as well , where new lexes are appended to our mental repertoire constantly. The aim of this study is to determine whether performing word formation processes supports   EFL college students autonomy and to identify the most vital word formation processes activated on internet language . The research is an experimental one where a sample of (30) students of 2nd year students at the College of Education / Ibn-Rushd for the academic year 2014-2015 randomly selected to take a pre-test on morphology in general and word formation processes characterized by affixation in particular  to identify the formed words and to derive new words mainly by the process of derivation being the most focused process in the curriculum. After three months course teaching of word formation processes highlighted mostly by the most common processes Developed by internet language , a post-test is administered. Finally, in order to capture the probable significance of performing these processes on students’ autonomy, a(Mann-Whitney U test )  is used. The results come to reject the null hypothesis, and prove positively the enhancement achieved through learning and performing these processes especially when enriched by up-to-date internet derivations and creativity.

BackgroundNorth American studies show bipolar disorder is associated with elevated rates of problem gambling; however, little is known about rates in the different presentations of bipolar illness.AimsTo determine the prevalence and distribution of problem gambling in people with bipolar disorder in the UK.MethodThe Problem Gambling Severity Index was used to measure gambling problems in 635 participants with bipolar disorder.ResultsModerate to severe gambling problems were four times higher in people with bipolar disorder than in the general population, and were associated with type 2 disorder (OR = 1.74, P = 0.036), history of suicidal ideation or attempt (OR = 3.44, P = 0.02) and rapid cycling (OR = 2.63, P = 0.008).ConclusionsApproximately 1 in 10 patients with bipolar disorder may be at moderate to severe risk of problem gambling, possibly associated with suicidal behaviour and a rapid cycling course. Elevated rates of gambling problems in type 2 disorder highlight the probable significance of modest but unstable mood disturbance in the development and maintenance of such problems.

An elaborate and complex cytoplasmic reticulum composed of fine filaments and lamellae ranging from 0.1 to 4 microns in size is revealed by viewing the central vacuole of onion bulb parenchyma cells with the scanning election microscope. The larger cytoplasmic strands, visible with the light microscope, are composed of numerous smaller filaments (some tubular) which might explain the observed bidirectional movement of particles in these larger strands. The finely divided cytoplasmic network of filaments is continuous with the parietal cytoplasm inclosing the vacuolar sap. In these highly vacuolated cells the mass of the protoplast is in the form of an intravacuolar reticulum immersed in the cell sap. The probable significance of the vacuolar sap in relation to physiological processes of the cell is discussed.

ABSTRACT Disruption of the PA2491 gene in a mini-Tn5-tet insertion mutant of a clinical isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa increased expression of the mexEF-oprN multidrug efflux genes and decreased production of outer membrane protein OprD, concomitant with enhanced resistance to chloramphenicol, quinolones, and imipenem, which was reminiscent of previously described nfxC mutants. PA2491 encodes a probable oxidoreductase previously shown to be positively regulated by the MexT positive regulator of mexEF-oprN expression (T. Köhler, S. F. Epp, L. K. Curty, and J. C. Pechére, J. Bacteriol. 181:6300-6305, 1999). Spontaneous multidrug-resistant mutants of the P. aeruginosa clinical isolate hyperexpressing mexEF-oprN and showing reduced production of OprD were readily selected in vitro, and all of them were shown to carry mutations in PA2491, highlighting the probable significance of such mutations as determinants of MexEF-OprN-mediated multidrug resistance in vivo.

There has been a long-standing controversy over the efficacy of rapid maxillary expansion to relieve nasal obstruction and improve respiration. Recently rhinomanometry has provided a discipline for the investigation into nasal airway physiology with quantifiable parameters for evaluation and comparable studies. In this trial, a sample of 26 patients (13 male and 13 female, age range 10·10 to 19·6 years), receiving rapid maxillary expansion as part of their orthodontic mechano-therapy, were appraised for nasal airway resistance before and after expansion. The posterior rhinomanometric technique was used, measuring the respiratory flow between pharynx and the nostrils at a preset pressure difference between these two points. The formula for calculating the resistance is derived from the electrical Ohm's Law and requires that the pressure difference be divided by the flow. Reductions were recorded in all cases with an average of 36·2 per cent (range 11·6–58·6). The correlation between the resistance reductions and the delivered expansions (increases in trans-palatal widths) was weak (r = 0·32). In view of the probable significance of the liminal valve in nasal resistance, expansions in this area were assessed by changes in the transalar widths. The correlation between transalar increases and the trans-palatal expansions was weak (r = 0·115), as it was between the transalar increases and the reductions in nasal airway resistance (r = 0·30).
