Green wall systems have greatly advanced over the past few decades and hold important potential for the future in light of predicted urban population growth, densification, and climate change. This article provides a brief background to living walls, followed by a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of the four types of systems that are currently available in South Africa. It makes use of a case study review of three recently implemented edible living walls in Gauteng to reflect on the challenges currently experienced and the future potential benefits, with specific focus on system resilience, economic feasibility, and edible plant possibilities. Interviews were conducted with clients and client representatives, contractors and/or designers on each project. The findings suggest that living walls have indirect commercial value through customer experience and satisfaction, as well as educational value. Should the scale, economic feasibility and resilience of living wall systems be enhanced, they can improve urban food production. The article concludes that this could be achieved in the Global South by using simplistic technologies with lower cost living wall infrastructure systems. When deployed on a large scale, with climate-tolerant indigenous and edible plants in exterior systems, productivity will be improved.

Babylon, located on the river Euphrates some 56 miles south of modern Baghdad, is first documented in the second half of the 3rd millennium bce, although very little is known about it from that time. The city rose to prominence in the early 2nd millennium bce after Sumu-la-el (1880–1845 bce), a predecessor of Hammurabi, made it the capital of the newly founded Amorite dynasty of Babylon (the so-called “First Dynasty of Babylon”). From then on Babylon remained the most important city of southern Mesopotamia, achieving the status of imperial capital following the final defeat of Assyria by the Babylonian king Nabopolassar (626–605 bce) and his Median allies in 612 bce. The reign of Nabopolassar’s son, Nebuchadnezzar II (604–562 bce), is regarded as Babylon’s heyday. This was a time of enormous prosperity, intense building activity, and urban population growth. It was also the time of the Babylonian exile, when deported Judeans were settled in Babylonia following Nebuchadnezzar’s sack of Jerusalem in 586 bce. However, the Neo-Babylonian empire was short-lived: with its conquest by Cyrus II in 539 bce, Babylon was no longer an imperial capital, although it remained a major city within the Achaemenid empire. After Alexander the Great conquered the region in 331 bce, Babylon remained important in spite of the new foundation of Seleuceia-on-the-Tigris in around 300 bce. Scholars attached to the great temple of Marduk were instrumental in preserving and handing down Mesopotamian learning right down until the demise of the cuneiform writing tradition in the 1st century ce (or possibly even later). Babylon’s legacy is such that popular accounts have tended to prioritize the well-known classical and Biblical stories at the expense of the contemporary archaeological and cuneiform textual evidence that bear direct testimony to the city and its history. Although the ruins of Babylon had attracted the interest of travelers for several centuries, it was not until the 19th century that archaeological investigation began, and this only took on a more systematic, scientific format with the German excavations that began at the turn of the 20th century. Those campaigns, and the publication of their results, revolutionized our knowledge of the city and made it possible for scholars to integrate information about the city’s topography drawn from the cuneiform tablets. The last fifty years or so have seen further excavation campaigns, more limited in scope, and in some cases associated with ambitious reconstruction projects aimed at making the remains more accessible to the public and showcasing Iraq’s cultural heritage. The archaeological evidence as a whole is skewed toward the city’s later history: the excavators were hardly able to access the 2nd-millennium-bce occupation levels on account of the high ground water. The excavated remains primarily reflect the city layout of Nebuchadnezzar II’s time, although a good many of its monuments survived well into the Seleucid or even the Parthian era.

<p>The combined effect of shrinking average household size and steady urban population growth places considerable stress on existing land supply within urban limits, creating significant challenges for meeting new housing demand in a sustainable way. One option, intensification, is occurring rapidly in New Zealand’s main urban centres. Intensive housing in Auckland, for example, represents 35% of Auckland’s total housing market (2007), and “…indications are that the size of the intensive housing market will increase … it is possible that in the future intensive housing will be the housing market rather than a segment within it.” It is therefore important and urgent to consider ways of achieving higher density housing efficiently on less available land. One design strategy that may contribute significantly towards achieving this goal is the use of ‘multivalent’ communal space. In New Zealand, little consideration is given to the provision of ‘multivalent’ communal space in higher density housing. Consequently, opportunities are being missed to utilise urban land more efficiently in ways that enhance the quality of higher density living environments. This thesis research suggests that ‘multivalent’ communal space has significant potential for better utilisation of urban land and the enhancement of residents’ quality of life in intensive urban environments.</p>

This study focused on analyzing the impacts of different sectors’ growth and globalization on child labor in Pakistan. The order of integration variables was found mix as some were I(0) and some were I(1). That’s why, the long run and short run dynamics were evaluated through ARDL mechanism using data from 1980-2014. The long run and short run inferences revealed that growth reduced child labor significantly in all sectors except services. The urban population growth significantly lessened the child labor as compared to rural population. The FDI significantly decreased the child labor growth while trade openness did opposite. Results suggest that trade policy and labor laws of ILO should be implemented.

Increased exposure to extreme heat from both climate change and the urban heat island effect—total urban warming—threatens the sustainability of rapidly growing urban settlements worldwide. Extreme heat exposure is highly unequal and severely impacts the urban poor. While previous studies have quantified global exposure to extreme heat, the lack of a globally accurate, fine-resolution temporal analysis of urban exposure crucially limits our ability to deploy adaptations. Here, we estimate daily urban population exposure to extreme heat for 13,115 urban settlements from 1983 to 2016. We harmonize global, fine-resolution (0.05°), daily temperature maxima and relative humidity estimates with geolocated and longitudinal global urban population data. We measure the average annual rate of increase in exposure (person-days/year−1) at the global, regional, national, and municipality levels, separating the contribution to exposure trajectories from urban population growth versus total urban warming. Using a daily maximum wet bulb globe temperature threshold of 30 °C, global exposure increased nearly 200% from 1983 to 2016. Total urban warming elevated the annual increase in exposure by 52% compared to urban population growth alone. Exposure trajectories increased for 46% of urban settlements, which together in 2016 comprised 23% of the planet’s population (1.7 billion people). However, how total urban warming and population growth drove exposure trajectories is spatially heterogeneous. This study reinforces the importance of employing multiple extreme heat exposure metrics to identify local patterns and compare exposure trends across geographies. Our results suggest that previous research underestimates extreme heat exposure, highlighting the urgency for targeted adaptations and early warning systems to reduce harm from urban extreme heat exposure.

Abstract In recent years, Poland has seen an increased migration of people to cities, which translates into significant urban population growth. This, in turn, raises new challenges in the performance of cities’ tasks and responsibilities. Additionally, climate changes and the depletion of natural resources necessitate the modification of existing urban practices. Polish cities seek solutions which would enable social, economic and environmental demands to be reconciled so that urban spaces become friendly for the city’s inhabitants and investors. Some Polish cities have applied the smart city concept to solve their problems. Despite the fact that the concept has been the subject of scientific research for many years, no universal definition of the smart city has been agreed upon. Analyzed assumptions of the smart city concept as well as the Polish experiences in the implementation indicate that the concept is dynamic and changes over time. It should be considered as a perpetual process unrestricted by a specific timeframe. This impedes the formulation of uniform, generally accepted assumptions of the concept since its existence is inscribed in the change related to urban development. This article claims that this would be a beneficial approach for formulating the general characteristics of the smart city that could be applicable to any city, and that could be employed regardless of the present challenges cities may face.

Abstract: The concept of sustainable development and the concept of smart city are two basic concepts of the modern world, created because of urban population growth, climate change, scarcity of resources and other changes and challenges. It can be said that these two concepts came about because of an innovative way of thinking about the crisis that society is in. To facilitate the adaptation of urban areas to new concepts that place emphasis on sustainability in an economic, environmental and social context, ISO has further a range of standards that are not only aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals but also the Smart Cities concept. The paper defines standards that cities need to adapt to, or whose requirements they need to meet to achieve sustainable development, and emphasizes the ISO 37120 standard, the first standard to propose a set of indicators for measuring and monitoring the success of Smart City initiatives. Sažetak: Koncept održivog razvoja i koncept pametnog grada dva su temeljna koncepta suvremenog svijeta, nastala kao posljedica rasta broja stanovnika urbanih područja, klimatskih promjena, oskudnosti resursa i ostalih promjena te izazova. Može se reći kako su ta dva koncepta nastala posljedično inovativnom načinu promišljanja o krizi u kojoj se društvo nalazi. Za lakšu prilagodbu urbanih područja novim konceptima, koji naglasak stavljaju na održivost u ekonomskom, ekološkom i socijalnom kontekstu, ISO na raspolaganje dalje niz normi, koje su ne samo usklađene s ciljevima održivog razvoja UN-a, već i konceptom Pametnih gradova. Kroz rad definiraju se norme kojima se gradovi trebaju prilagoditi, odnosno čije zahtjeve trebaju ispuniti, kako bi ostvarili održivi razvoj te se naglašava i norma ISO 37120, prva norma koja predlaže set indikatora za mjerenje i praćenje uspjeha Smart City inicijativa.

Debates within urban studies concerning the relationship between urbanisation and infectious disease focus on issues of urban population growth, density, migration and connectivity. However, an effective long-term risk and wellbeing agenda, without which the threat of future pandemics cannot be mitigated, must also take account of demographic forces and changes as critical drivers of transmission and mortality risk within and beyond cities. A better understanding of the dynamics of fertility, mortality and changing age structures – key determinants of urban decline/growth in addition to migration – provides the foundation upon which healthier cities and a healthy global urban system can be developed. The study of how basic demographic attributes and trends are distributed in space and how they interact with risks, including those of infectious disease, must be incorporated as a priority into a post-COVID-19 urban public health agenda. This perspective concurs with recent debates in urban studies emphasising the demographic drivers of urban change. Moreover, it raises critical questions about the microbial and environmental emphasis of much research on the interface of urban health and governance.
