Intense exploitation of land implies the development of multi-level, multi-purpose, overlapping and interlocking structures on 3D space, thus resulting in complex, stratified, 3D real property rights between individual owners, as well as restrictions. Legislation regulates the ownership status and use of land by imposing restrictions known as Public Law Restrictions (PLRs). PLRs extend to various fields and various legislative frameworks, such as the protection of archaeological sites, protection and maintenance of underground infrastructures and utilities, environmental protection, flying of unmanned air vehicles, etc. PLRs are usually investigated in the context of property rights and restrictions in the various Land Administration Systems worldwide, and do not often gain specific attention. However, it is noticed that the restrictions that arise from Public Law need to be investigated and classified, so that they can be better utilised in the property status of land ownership. This review paper investigates the legal statutes on PLRs within the context of 3D land administration and the stipulations used to provide unambiguous modelling of PLRs, as provided by the relative literature. Moreover, the PLRs applied in the 3D space, to clearly depict rights, restrictions and responsibilities on the relevant spatial unit (land, air, marine parcel, mine, utility network, etc.), are particularly examined. Therefore, this work is to critically review and assess the aforementioned approaches on PLRs’ registration, modelling and organisation, as provided by a literature survey, and provides an overall view of the requirements and challenges within the development of 3D Land Administration Systems also considering standardisation developments.

: Carbon dots (CDs), an emerging nanoagent providing an alternative to conventional fluorescent agents, are sparking the scientist’s interest in biomedical applications owing to their unique advantages, including ease of synthesis, large scale production, low cost, prominent photoluminescence, good photostability, easy functionalization, sufficient biocompatibility, good nanocarrier, and excellent ability to generate reactive oxygen species or heat. Herein, this perspective provides a viewpoint about imaging-assisted biomedical applications using fluorescent CDs regarding in vitro and in vivo bioimaging, imaging-assisted sensing, and imaging-guided therapy. The opinions about their potential and challenges in applicable biomedical applications are discussed to develop, further ameliorated CDs for their intense exploitation in diverse imaging-assisted biomedical applications.

AbstractThe article attempts to assess the changes in the properties of the soil backfill on the basis of studies carried out on the soil compaction indicator for a buried flexible steel structure located in a section of the Pan-European railway line. Initial tests on soil compaction showed that the backfilling does not meet the standard for railway structures. On this basis, it was decided to conduct additional studies taking into account the probability of compacting the soil during the operation of the structure. In order to verify any changes, the compaction indicator tests were repeated after 7 months of use under intensive railway load. On this basis, it can to be stated that there is relationship between the impact of a service load and the parameters of a soil backfill over time. As a result of the intense exploitation of a structure, an increase in the soil compaction index even up to 6.0% (average 2.5%) occurs.

Understanding long-term changes in life-history traits is central to assessing and managing freshwater fisheries. In this study, we explored how life-history traits have shifted in association with long-term change in population status for a native fish species (freshwater sleeper, Odontobutis sinensis, a by-catch species of shrimp traps) in the middle Yangtze lakes, China. We assessed the life-history traits of the species from Honghu Lake in 2016, where abundance had been dramatically lower following about 60 years of high fishing pressure, and made comparisons to similar data from Liangzi Lake (1957), when fishing intensity was low and abundance was high, and Bao’an Lake (1993–1994), when about 10 years of intense exploitation had occurred and abundance had greatly declined. Modern Honghu Lake sleeper exhibit life-history traits that are substantially more opportunistic compared to both of the historical populations. Modern fish were larger at age-1 and had significantly faster growth rates, a higher prevalence of sexually mature individuals and increased fecundities. Fish from the historical samples were larger and had higher age class diversity and delayed sexual maturation. Combined, the data suggest that faster growth towards early sexual maturation and reduced body sizes are associated with destabilized populations and ecosystems. Similar life-history patterns are common in other declined fish populations under exploitation. Recovering historic fish life-history dynamics requires conservation management policies aimed at reducing harvest and improving floodplain habitats.

DS (David’s site) is one of the new archaeological sites documented in the same paleolandscape in which FLK 22 was deposited at about 1.85 Ma in Olduvai Gorge. Fieldwork in DS has unearthed the largest vertically-discrete archaeological horizon in the African Pleistocene, where a multi-cluster anthropogenic accumulation of fossil bones and stone tools has been identified. In this work we present the results of the techno-economic study of the lithic assemblage recovered from DS. We also explore the spatial magnitude of the technological behaviors documented at this spot using powerful spatial statistical tools to unravel correlations between the spatial distributional patterns of lithic categories. At DS, lavas and quartzite were involved in different technological processes. Volcanic materials, probably transported to this spot from a close source, were introduced in large numbers, including unmodified materials, and used in percussion activities and in a wide variety of reduction strategies. A number of volcanic products were subject to outward fluxes to other parts of the paleolandscape. In contrast, quartzite rocks were introduced in smaller numbers and might have been subject to a significantly more intense exploitation. The intra-site spatial analysis has shown that specialized areas cannot be identified, unmodified materials are not randomly distributed, percussion and knapping categories do not spatially overlap, while bipolar specimens show some sort of spatial correlation with percussion activities.

The importance of forest ecosystems for ecological balance and as a reservoir of genetic heritage and biodiversity is evident, the need for conservation is further exalted by the great anthropic pressure suffered by these ecosystems due to the increasing demand of the forest sector. The possibility of using biotechnological practices to combine conservation with sustainable economic development emerges as a promising alternative for the recovery and use of forest species, especially those threatened with extinction. The aims of the article is to demonstrate the main aspects of Forest Biotechnology with regard to conservation and the continuity of the supply of the demand of the economic sector. The central role of wood in economic development has led to the intense exploitation of forest ecosystems, which has resulted in the loss of biodiversity and reduced capacity to meet the demands of the sector. The tools of forest biotechnology, when employed in the optimization of conservation, allow a compatibilization with commercial production, acting as instruments of sustainable development. Forestry Biotechnology acts as an instrument to reconcile conservation with economic development, including forests at the heart of a strategy for a sustainable future.

During the transition to the postindustrial knowledge economy the world witnesses people’s increasing desire to spend their spare time in an interesting and quality way, to live an active lifestyle, to develop themselves and get new impressions. Consequently, there is an intense growth of new forms and types of economic, social and cultural activity aimed at satisfying the existing demand. One of the most impressive phenomena of the presentday economy is industrial tourism. It provides new visual impressions and satisfies people’s interest to complicated industrial process, to the evolution of technological development of modern civilization and also to the history of their families. For manufacturing companies industrial tourism means more intense exploitation of their facilities, additional income from tours, excursions and souvenirs. In terms of providing industrial touristic services Russia’s most attractive sites include metallurgical enterprises. Their peculiar features such as large scale of constructions and technological process, bright visual effects related to the transformations of metal find a ready market in the experience economy. Moreover, by means of industrial tourism metallurgical enterprises will be able to solve the important tasks of attracting new qualified employees, creating a positive corporate image and business reputation in the society and maintaining prestige and respect for workers and engineers.

The intense exploitation since 1972 of the formerly only slightly exploited protogynous hermaphroditic fish Pagrus pagrus (L.) in southern Brazil has led in less than a decade to the collapse of the fishery, with no recovery four decades later. In this study we analized the age structure, growth, reproduction and mortality of the species were studied based on samples collected from 1976 to 1985 to provide a baseline before the onset of overexploitation. Maximum estimated ages were 21 and 26 years based on scale and otolith readings, respectively. Mean total length (TL) at age did not differ between males and females, while hermaphrodites were smaller. The von Bertalanffy growth coefficients for all fish (immature, females, hermaphrodites and males) were L∞ = 447 mm, k = 0.204 and t0 = −1.134 yr. Change in growth was observed during the study period. Females were dominant at all sizes, hermaphrodites were only present up to intermediate sizes, and males, despite being infrequent at small sizes, made up over 40% among the larger specimen (TL > 400 mm). Spawning took place mainly in late spring and condition factors were lower after spawning. Natural mortality was estimated as M = 0.173 yr−1 based on the von Bertalanffy growth parameters. Total mortality (Z) and exploitation rate (E) estimated from catch curves of fully recruited red porgies aged five to ten years increased from 0.24 yr−1 and 28% before 1973 to 0.49 yr−1 and 63% in the following years. Two distinct scale and otolith patterns, one with well-marked annuli and another with faint or absent annuli, suggested that the red porgy stock off southern Brazil might not be homogeneous and may include subpopulations that do not fully mix.

Par la qualité de leur bois et leurs nombreux usages traditionnels, les espèces du genre Entandrophragma font l’objet d’une intense exploitation, susceptible de compromettre leur pérennité en l’absence de gestion durable. La présente étude dresse un état de la situation de cinq espèces commerciales principales de ce genre : Entandrophragma angolense, E. congoense (souvent assimilée par erreur à E. angolense), E. candollei, E. cylindricum et E. utile. Elle propose des pistes de recherche pour améliorer les stratégies de gestion durable au sein de ce genre. L’étude est principalement basée sur les données scientifiques (publications), économiques (statistiques de production et d’exportation) et juridiques (lois et réglementations), mais aussi sur les plans d’aménagement et les rapports d’inventaire. Les connaissances sur leur gestion sont encore fragmentaires alors qu’elles sont considérées comme vulnérables dans la liste rouge de l’UICN. La forte exploitation industrielle ou artisanale de ces espèces ne s’effectue pas toujours dans le respect d’un plan d’aménagement validé, ni de la durée minimum des rotations qui permettraient l’un et l’autre un taux de reconstitution pérennisant cette ressource. Leur gestion durable exige notamment le développement et le respect de mesures d’aménagement pour rendre leur exploitation renouvelable à long terme. Cette exploitation doit s’appuyer sur une gestion adéquate des peuplements naturels et sur le reboisement ainsi que sur des mesures de conservation. Les recherches à développer doivent intéresser leur vitesse de croissance face aux évolutions climatiques, l’évaluation de leurs stocks (production, biomasse, carbone), l’actualisation de leur distribution spatiale, l’amélioration de leur régénération naturelle, les processus de leur reproduction, leurs propriétés anatomiques et technologiques, autant de pistes pertinentes pour garantir la pérennité des espèces exploitables du genre Entandrophragma.
