Bale gambang-baruk institution is an important institution as a center of celebration and a resource in the context of socialization, as well as a center of ritual and worship, mystical practices as well as a traditional village fort among the Bidayuh ethnic group in Sarawak. The objective of this study is to evaluate the function and role of the bale gambang-baruk as a centre of cultural and traditional festival social centre of the Bidayuh community. This aspect will involve the study of traditional celebrations and ritual processes held in the bale gambang-baruk. Qualitative research methodology is used with data collection made using premier sources, namely through the author’s study in the field, with research by involvement and observation in several Bidayuh villages, namely in Kampung Gumbang, Kampung Opar and Kampung Pichin which still uphold these practices despite the currents of modernization. The results of this study prove that bale gambang-baruk is still used as a centre for Bidayuh customs, celebrations and socialization. This is done as a continuation of traditional culture although there are some forms found in this celebration contain elements of modernization. For example, the involvement of elected representatives, government agencies, and cultural bodies of the Bidayuh community itself, in the effort to preserve and promote this institution. In this contemporary context it has become part of the tourism products of the Bidayuh ethnic in particular and Sarawak in general. Apparently, the new institutions provide space for involvement and awareness in the Bidayuh community to maintain their identity and dignify their heritage which is becoming extinct by the process of globalization.

Abstract This article examines the construction of lyric identities by Li Xuanti, a classical-style poet, cultural celebrity and prominent civil servant in collaborationist regimes based in Nanjing during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It argues that Li used his poetry to explore the confusion, ambivalence and sense of cultural pride while living with the occupiers. Despite his collaboration, a frequent identity that appears in Li’s poetry is that of a yimin (loyalist), who has retreated to the inner world of reclusion. With the progress of the war, however, another identity eventually emerged in Li’s poetry, namely that of a patriot. Historical allusions in Li’s poems thus acquire double-entendre, expressing his ambivalent loyalty. Li was also at the social centre of a group of like-minded collaborators and accommodators in Nanjing, bound by their common practice of classical-style poetry and arts. Their community thus becomes a special case of study for the sociology of survival under the Japanese occupation.

The starting point of this essay is a multidisciplinary study conducted by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano regarding the opportunities for the revitalisation of the almost 800 Community Cinemas owned by the Italian Catholic Church. These cinemas represent the local communities and are an important part of the contemporary Italian urban environment. Research shows that cinemas are threatened by how people currently consume audio-visual content, that there is a need to rethink the projection theatres as social gathering spaces open to the twenty-first-century neighbourhood, thanks to some features innate in the Community Cinemas that can be enhanced. Four case studies have been identified that represent the most common (or widest variation of) size and general layout among the 800 existing situations. A general model has been developed through the radical re-shaping of the space in accordance with new urban and social functions and implementing new technologies. By designing these case-study project solutions, it was possible to define that a new model of multipurpose social centre merged with a more traditional projection room is not only possible, but thanks to state-of-the-art technologies could represent a perfect match and an opportunity to make significant changes throughout a community.

This article has resulted from multiple years of cooperation of the research team Bittnerová, Doubek, and Levínská that examines issues related to Roma education in the context of social exclusion. Its main topic is to search for an understanding and interpretation of the failure of the project aiming to develop a social centre intended to serve as a basis for providing social services to needy residents of the researched site. The failure of “integration” is not just the refusal of embracing intercultural differences but the symbolic refusal of the impoverished status of the whole town, with the local Roma being the most glaring symbol of that impoverishment. This theoretical point is the theory of cultural models of Strauss and Quinn. “Romahood” is seen as a radial family resemblance category driven by a prototype in the context of distributed culture.
