Roberts’ False Brook Salamander (Pseudoeurycea robertsi) is a critically endangered plethodontid salamander, endemic to the Nevado de Toluca Volcano (NTV), Mexico. Little is known about the biology and ecology of this species, including its microhabitats. Thus, this study aimed to collect basic information about P. robertsi. We sampled fourteen forested sites in the NTV; to corroborate the correct identification of the species we used genetic data, we assessed the variation in head morphometric measurements and dorsal colouration patterns amongst localities and the microhabitat features associated with P. robertsi presence. Of the four potential salamander species, P. robertsi was the most abundant (89.80%) and widely distributed (approximately within 130 km2) salamander in the NTV. We did not find significant variations in morphometry; however, we found significant differences in dorsal patterns between populations (in the number and size of segments of the dorsal stripe). The average total length for 185 adults was 89.15 mm (38.7–117.9 mm); we found seven patterns of dorsal stripe. We found 98% of P. robertsi individuals under the bark of fallen logs in Abies religiosa and A. religiosa-Pinus sp. forests, with a higher number of detected salamanders in naturally-fallen logs than in cut logs (34% vs. 10%). Thus, keeping well-preserved A. religiosa forests and retaining fallen logs is essential to P. robertsi conservation.

As part of a comparison of the collembolan fauna in soil of forest, grasslands and broadacre agriculture in north east Iran, several pale green specimens were found that complied with all characters of Isotomurus prasinus (Reuter, 1891) and keyed out as such in Potapov (2001) except that the body covering consisted of smooth mesochaetae and not ciliated chaetae as are present in prasinus according to Potapov (2001). On a more extensive examination of the recent literature, it was clear that the Iranian specimens belonged to the species Isotomurus graminis Fjellberg, 2007 described six years later. In his description, Fjellberg (2007) notes that some specimens of the new species could have previously been identified as I. prasinus in spite of having a different chaetotaxic covering. He also notes that, in a number of characters, it is identical with Isotomurus unifasciatus (Börner, 1901) but the colour differentiates them as this latter species usually has a broad, pigmented, longitudinal dorsal stripe.

Longevity data for wild felids are lacking in the literature.  Here we report a camera trap recapture of a European Wildcat Felis silvestris at Mt. Etna in Sicily, Italy after nine years.  This individual was clearly identifiable as its tail ended with a white ring rather than the typical black ring and had a unique shape of the dorsal stripe.  At first capture on 26 May 2009, this cat was assessed as an adult, so that the likely minimum age of this individual at the time of recapture on 10 June 2018 must have been be at least 10 years.  This finding represents the oldest known European Wildcat in the wild and provides insight into age structure in wildcat populations.

Three new species of the xenodermatid genus Achalinus are described from northern Vietnam based on morphological and molecular evidence: Achalinus juliani sp. nov. is characterized by a combination of the following characters: 1) maxillary teeth 28; 2) suture between the internasals distinctly longer than that between the prefrontals; 3) internasal not fused to prefrontal; 4) loreal not fused with prefrontal; 5) infralabials 6; 6) mental separated from anterior chin shields; 7) two elongated anterior temporals, in contact with the eye, and two posterior temporals; 8) dorsal scales in 25–23–23 rows, keeled; 9) ventrals 173–179; 10) subcaudals 77–91, unpaired; 11) a total length of at least 413 mm (with a maximum tail length of 109 mm, and a tail/total length ratio of 0.22–0.37); 12) dorsum in preservative reddish to greyish brown above, with the lower and posterior head sides being paler; venter greyish cream, with the underside of the tail being somewhat darker. Achalinus timi sp. nov. is characterized by a combination of the following characters: 1) maxillary teeth 27; 2) suture between the internasals distinctly longer than that between the prefrontals; 3) loreal fused with the prefrontal on each side, with the prefrontal extending towards the supralabials; 4) dorsal scales in 25–25–23 rows, keeled; 5) ventrals 170+1; 6) subcaudals 72, unpaired; 7) a total length of at least 177.9 mm in males (with a tail length of 37.9 mm, and a tail/total length ratio of 0.21); 8) dorsum in preservative reddish to greyish brown above, with wide portion of the vertebral region being distinctly darker; the lower head sides somewhat paler; infralabial and chin shields light greyish brown; venter greyish cream, with the underside of the tail being somewhat darker and the chin region somewhat paler. Achalinus emilyae sp. nov. is characterized by a combination of the following characters: 1) maxillary teeth 27 or 28; 2) suture between internasals distinctly longer than that between the prefrontals; 3) internasal not fused to prefrontal; 4) loreal not fused with prefrontal; 5) infralabials 5; 6) mental separated from anterior chin shields; 7) two anterior temporals, only the upper one in contact with eye, and two posterior temporals; 8) dorsal scales in 23–23–23 rows, keeled; 9) ventrals in females 157–161; 10) subcaudals in females 63, unpaired; 11) a total length of at least 519.5 mm (with a maximum tail length of 95.1 mm, and a tail/total length ratio of 0.18 in females); 12) dorsum iridescent pale yellowish brown with a dark longitudinal mid-dorsal stripe. In terms of pairwise genetic distance (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, COI), the three new species differ by at least 12.7% from other members of the genus, including themselves. The total number of Achalinus known is increased to twelve and the number of Achalinus species known from Vietnam is increased from three to six. Currently ten species of xenodermatids are known to exist in Vietnam: Achalinus ater, A. emilyae, A. juliani, A. rufescens, A. spinalis, A. timi, Fimbrios klossi, F. smithi, Parafimbrios lao, and P. vietnamensis.

Abstract Throughout the animal kingdom there are species that have two or more phenotypic forms or ‘morphs’, and many of these are amphibians. In North America, the red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus can have either a red dorsal stripe or no dorsal stripe (lead-phase form), and evidence to date indicates the lead-phase form incurs a greater number of attacks from predators. In a recent collection of 51 P. cinereus, blood smears of both color morphs (35 red-stripe, 16 lead-phase) were examined to obtain numbers of circulating leukocytes (via light microscopy), which can be used to indirectly estimate levels of stress hormones in vertebrates via a ‘hematological stress index’, which is the ratio between the number of two leukocyte types (neutrophils and lymphocytes). Our results showed that lead-phase salamanders tended to have greater numbers of circulating neutrophils and lower numbers of circulating lymphocytes than red-stripe morphs, leading to higher average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratios in lead-phase individuals. Since the salamanders were held (refrigerated) for 7 days before sampling, we cannot be certain if this effect is a stress reaction to the captivity or the normal level for this morph. However comparison with two sets of related salamanders that were captured and sampled immediately indicates the red-stripe salamanders were either not stressed from the captivity at all, or their white blood cell distributions had returned to normal after 7 days of captivity. Taken together, our results indicate that lead-phase forms of P. cinereus have higher stress levels than the red-stripe forms, which may be a consequence of their higher exposure to, and/or attacks from, predators. They may also indicate that the lead-phase form is less-suited to captivity than the red-stripe form of this species.

Metaleptobasis cyanolineata is transferred to Mesoleptobasis and a new species, Mesoleptobasis elongata, is described. The genus is diagnosed by the combination of rounded frons, highly modified pronotum with long processes at least in males, pterothoracic color pattern lacking dark mid-dorsal stripe, pretarsus with supplementary tooth vestigial or absent, vein descending from quadrangle forming an unbroken line to wing margin, and genital ligula with a small inner fold and with spine-like projections on lateral margins distal to flexure. Its species are illustrated, mapped, and keyed.

Two new South Asian catfish species of the family Erethistidae, Pseudolaguvia inornata and Pseudolaguvia muricata, are described from the Brahmaputra and Feni River drainages in Bangladesh. Pseudolaguvia inornata from the Feni River drainage can be distinguished from congeners in having a uniform coloration with a pale mid-dorsal stripe and brown submarginal stripes on each lobe of the caudal fin, while P muricata from the Brahmaputra River drainage can be distinguished from congeners by its elongate dorsal and pectoral-fin spines.

AbstractWithin a few weeks of metamorphosis, a dorsal stripe develops in smooth and palmate newts (Triturus vulgaris and T. helveticus). A method for distinguishing between the efts of these two species using characters based on the dorsal strip is described and evaluated. The method was tested using both experienced and inexperienced observers who, on average, classified 87% of the T. vulgaris and 97% of T. helveticus correctly. No misclassifications were made by any of the observers but a small proportion of the efts could not be classified with confidence into either category because the dorsal stripes were only faintly discernible.

Abstract The genetic basis of the species-specific dorsal abdominal stripe of Drosophila novamexicana was examined. The dorsal stripe is present in D. novamexicana and absent in all other members of the Drosophila virilis species group. Interspecific crosses between D. novamexicana and genetically marked D. virilis revealed that all four of the autosomes (except the tiny dot chromosome, which was not marked) and the sex chromosomes (the X and Y chromosome effects could not be disentangled) showed a significant effect on the width of the dorsal stripe. All the autosomes act approximately additively; only minor interactions were detected among them. No significant maternal effects were found. This means that a minimum of five loci are involved in the character difference between the two species, and this is the maximum number that this technique could discern. These results suggest that, based on the number of factors involved in the character difference, the inheritance of this character should be considered polygenic, but because chromosome 2 (the largest chromosome in the species) contributed over half of the variance toward the character difference, it is best to consider the inheritance oligogenic based on effect. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the importance of macromutation in speciation and the sex chromosome theory of speciation.
