Abstract: This work assesses current knowledge of zooplankton biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems of the state of Acre (Brazil). A bibliographic survey was undertaken, showing that most of the reported studies have focused on zooplankton diversity and composition. Fifteen locations have been studied. There is still a scarcity of information concerning zooplankton populations in the Amazon region. To date, 170 species of planktonic rotifers have been recorded, distributed in 26 families and 38 genera, together with 18 species of cladocerans, distributed in 8 families and 18 genera, and 4 species of copepods in 2 families and 6 genera. The results indicate the need for further research concerning the biodiversity of this group of organisms at locations in the basins of the Purus and Juruá Rivers, especially in lotic ecosystems and littoral zones, given the present lack of information and the socioeconomic importance they play in the region.

Abstract Ciliates are unicellular heterotrophic organisms that play a key role in the planktonic and benthic food webs of lakes, and represent a great potential as bioindicator. In this study, we used the top-bottom paleolimnological approach to compare the recent and past (i.e. prior to major anthropogenic impacts) ciliate communities of 48 lakes located along an elevation gradient using metabarcoding techniques applied on sedimentary DNA (sed-DNA). Our results show an overall decline in the β-diversity in recent time, especially in lowland lakes which are more strongly expose to local human pressure. Analyses of the functional groups indicate important restructuration of the trophic food web and changes that are consistent with several well documented environmental changes such as the widespread increase in deep water anoxia, changes in thermal stability and nutrient cycling. Our study demonstrates the potential offered by sed-DNA to uncover information about past ciliate communities on a wide variety of lakes and the potential of using ciliates as valuable indicators, integrating information from the pelagic to the benthic profundal (and littoral) zones. Through trait-based functional community approach, the ciliates provide additional valuable information on ecosystem functioning, thus offering more a holistic view on the long-term changes of aquatic ecosystems.

Globally-threatened freshwater mussels belonging to the order Unionida (Bivalvia) may be adversely affected by dense beds of submerged macrophytes that modify habitat at the sediment-water interface. Such effects can be particularly pronounced in modified lentic ecosystems such as reservoirs which are subject to hydrological regimes (e.g., hydropeaking) that can exacerbate macrophyte-mediated impacts, including anoxic or hypoxic conditions, the related release of toxic ions (e.g., ammonia), and silt accumulation that inhibits filter-feeding. Accordingly, we compared how population size-structure and biomass of the New Zealand mussel Echyridella menziesii varied inside and outside of dense beds of invasive macrophytes known to have similar impacts on water chemistry (e.g., anoxia) in two northern New Zealand hydroreservoir locations with contrasting hydrology (lacustrine location dominated by Ceratophyllum demersum; and riverine location dominated by Egeria densa). We found adverse sediment-water interface conditions were not always associated with dense submerged macrophyte beds in littoral zones. Nonetheless, where they occurred, adverse sediment-water interface conditions were primary drivers in reduced mussel density and adult skewed size-structure, inferring reduced recruitment. Disentangling direct and indirect effects with structural equation modelling indicated that increased pore-water ammonia did not impact these primarily adult populations of freshwater mussels. Increased sediment organic matter, silt, and previously recorded hypoxia and anoxia were exacerbated in the lacustrine section where variable flows promoting water mixing were not present to reduce their effects. High densities of mussels less than 40 mm in length were associated with favourable sediment-water interface conditions of low silt and sediment organic matter, suggesting that enhanced water exchange in and around macrophyte beds may increase juvenile mussel survival in littoral zones of the riverine lake section. Our findings highlight a potential role for hydropeaking management in mitigating the development of adverse physicochemical conditions, and underscore the context-specific effects that dense non-native macrophyte beds can have on mussel populations.

We investigated the response of benthic macroinvertebrates in the eulittoral, infralittoral, and sublittoral zones, in two segments of the freshwater Lake Wicko on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Our results showed that the morphometry of lakes plays a major role as a factor structuring the macroinvertebrates communities. Two parts of the lake, different in size and depth, show decreasing differences in the trophic state, abundance, diversity and number of indicator species of benthic fauna with the depth gradient. The most significant differences were observed between the littoral zones of both segments. Similar environmental conditions in the sublittoral zones corresponded to the simplified structure of the benthic macroinvertebrates communities. In the infralittoral zone, the most significant differences between the two segments, were recorded for mollusks and large crustaceans as well as the Oligochaeta/Chironomidae abundance ratio. In the sublittoral zone, the diversity of chironomids differed most strongly. Lower species diversity was found in the part of the lake with a slight depth decrease. Shredders reached significantly higher values in eulittoral and infralittoral of the deeper lake segment. Average Score Per Taxon increased with a depth gradient. We recommend testing benthic macroinvertebrates in lakes with different morphometrics individually for each depth zone.

Abstract Baiyangdian Lake (BYD), a large shallow lake in North China, has complex water landscape patterns that are underlies spatial variations in water quality. In this study, we collected 61 water samples from three water landscapes (reed littoral zones, fish ponds and open water) and analyzed them for water quality parameters, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). Water landscape distribution (determined using remote sensing imagery) was then used to assess correlations between water quality parameters and water landscape proportion in differently scaled buffer zones. There was substantial variation across all subareas, with TN and TP concentrations ranging from 0.90–4.10 mg/L and 0.06–0.18 mg/L, respectively. Spatial variations in water quality were mainly caused by water landscape distribution and external nutrient inputs. There were negative correlations between DOC, TN, and TP concentrations and the area proportion of reed littoral zones in the 300 and 500 m buffers. In contrast, DOC, TN and TP concentrations were significantly positively correlated with the area proportion of fish ponds in the 100 m buffer. Furthermore, compared with reed littoral zones, a lower nitrogen to phosphorus ratio and a higher proportion of dissolved organic nitrogen and tyrosine-like proteins were found in fish ponds. These effects were mainly attributed to development of internal sediment loadings due to nutrient exchange between sediment and overlying water. Therefore, dredging-based sediment removal from fish ponds should be considered to suppress internal phosphorus loading and accelerate recovery of the BYD ecosystem.

Lake littoral zones can also be regarded as another extremely hypersaline environment due to hypersaline properties of salt lakes. In this study, high-throughput sequencing technique was used to analyze bacteria and fungi from different rhizocompartments (rhizosphere and endosphere) of four dominant plants along the salinity gradient in the littoral zones of Ejinur Salt Lake. The study found that microbial α-diversity did not increase with the decrease of salinity, indicating that salinity was not the main factor on the effect of microbial diversity. Distance-based redundancy analysis and regression analysis were used to further reveal the relationship between microorganisms from different rhizocompartments and plant species and soil physicochemical properties. Bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere and endosphere were the most significantly affected by SO42–, SOC, HCO3–, and SOC, respectively. Correlation network analysis revealed the potential role of microorganisms in different root compartments on the regulation of salt stress through synergistic and antagonistic interactions. LEfSe analysis further indicated that dominant microbial taxa in different rhizocompartments had a positive response to plants, such as Marinobacter, Palleronia, Arthrobacter, and Penicillium. This study was of great significance and practical value for understanding salt environments around salt lakes to excavate the potential microbial resources.
