What to Accommodate to Develop Students' Academic Writing? Need Analysis for a Research-Based Textbook Development

The development of research-based learning proliferates throughout the world, and it depicts the growth of an academic article's publication globally. To strengthen the paper's quality, particularly in Indonesia, the students need a guideline on writing an academic article. This qualitative and quantitative research would portray the needs analysis in developing a research-based textbook in academic writing. Fifty students and thirty lecturers were involved in the interview, documentation, and survey. The result shows that the skills needed to accommodate are referencing skills, writing the research's significance, and writing the conclusion. This study also suggested nine units of an Academic Writing Textbook needed by the students to produce a good article, namely Introduction to Academic Article Writing, Strategies in avoiding plagiarism, Writing an introduction, writing a literature review, writing a research method, Presenting Findings and Discussion, Writing a conclusion, Tips on Referencing, choosing the title, and writing an abstract. These findings strengthen the previous studies, which states writing a conclusion of an academic article is challenging, particularly in the English Language Teaching context.

Dylematy współczesnego dziennikarza/dziennikarstwa – wybrane zagadnienia

The speed of information transfer, the limited forms and journalistic genres used in every day practice, inadequate professional preparation, fragmentary presentation of interviewees’ opinions, superficial journalistic research before a story is filed, and widespread access to the journalistic profession have significantly affected how the professionalism of journalists is perceived. Many journalists are inspired for this line of work, seeking sensation, or creating sensational content, which increases the number of readers, listeners or viewers as the events unfold and which contributes to an increase in the audience and in the number of readers of some titles. However, the briefness of the statements presented frequently results in journalistic material being one-sided and lacking an in-depth approach to the issue. Under such circumstances, interventionist information materials have dominated our media, limiting the readers’ opportunity to see a good documentary or read a good article. There is a shortage of teachers with real authority in journalistic circles, who are in a position to denounce abuses and demonstrate the merits of professional journalistic abilities. The aim of the paper is to indicate journalistic behaviors that raise controversies and draw attention to the dilemmas of modern journalism which diminish the value of this profession.

PELATIHAN PENULISAN KARYA TULIS ILMIAH BAGI GURU SEKOLAH DASAR DESA SAGARANTEN KECAMATAN CIWARU KABUPATEN KUNINGAN

Abstrak: Faktanya, masih ada beberapa guru SD yang menulis artikel di koran atau mempresentasikan artikel mereka di seminar regional / nasional. Akibatnya, mereka akan menghadapi kendala dalam meningkatkan nilai mereka. Berdasarkan survei, kami menemukan bahwa banyak guru SD di Desa Sagaranten Kecamatan Ciwaru Kab.Kuningan masih belum tahu bagaimana membuat artikel yang bagus. Juga, tidak ada Jurnal untuk guru SD sebagai media bagi mereka dalam mengirimkan artikel mereka untuk memiliki beberapa kredit. Berdasarkan kasus itu, tim layanan masyarakat mencoba memberi mereka beberapa pelatihan bagaimana merancang penelitian kelas, dan bagaimana membuat artikel yang bagus. Dengan memiliki ini, mereka diharapkan dapat menemukan topik mereka dan merancang penelitian kelas mereka, kemudian mereka akan membuat artikelnya yang dapat dikirim ke surat kabar atau jurnal. Secara otomatis, mereka akan memiliki beberapa kredit untuk menaikkan nilai mereka dan mereka akan sejahtera. Pelatihan diberikan kepada 50 guru SD dari Desa Sagarenten. Kami menemukan bahwa sebenarnya ada satu guru yang memiliki pengalaman dalam melakukan penelitian kelas, tetapi masih ada banyak guru yang kurang dalam membuat penelitian dan artikel. As a result, they will face obstacles in increasing their value. Based on the survey, we found that many elementary teachers in Sagaranten Village Ciwaru District Kab.Kuningan still do not know how to make a good article. Also, there is no Journal for elementary teachers as a medium for them in submitting their articles to have some credits. Based on the case, the community service team tried to give them some training on how to design classroom research, and how to create good articles. By having this, they are expected to find their topic and design their classroom research, then they will create an article that can be sent to a newspaper or journal. Automatically, they will have some credit to raise their value and they will prosper. Training was given to 50 elementary school teachers from Sagarenten Village. We found that there is actually one teacher who has experience in conducting classroom research, but there are still many teachers who are lacking in making research and articles. ‘It’s hard to write a good article’: The online comprehension of excuses as indirect replies

In an eye-tracking experiment, we examined how readers comprehend indirect replies when they are uttered in reply to a direct question. Participants read vignettes that described two characters engaged in dialogue. Each dialogue contained a direct question (e.g., How are you doing in Chemistry?) answered with an excuse (e.g., The exams are not fair). In response to direct questions, such indirect replies are typically used to avoid a face-threatening disclosure (e.g., doing badly on the Chemistry course). Our goal was to determine whether readers are sensitive during reading to the indirect meaning communicated by such replies. Of the three contexts we examined, the first described a negative, face-threatening situation and the second a positive, non-face threatening situation, while the third was neutral. Analysis of reading times to the replies provides strong evidence that readers are sensitive online to the face-saving function of indirect replies.
