The main goal of this study was to investigate if there is an association between Oral Herpes (OH) recurrent episodes and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL1A, IL10, and IL1RN genes in a group of Brazilian Para-athletes. This transversal study was prepared according to the STrengthening the REporting of Genetic Association Studies (STREGA) guidelines. Oral examination and DNA collection for genotyping were performed in a non-probabilistic convenience sampling composed of Brazilian para-athletes who participated in a Brazilian selective competition. Data referring to the general characterization of sample were collected through a self-reported questionnaire. Candidate genes were chosen with the UCSC Genome Browser and SNPs in IL1A gene (rs17561, rs1304037), IL10 gene (rs1800871), and IL1RN gene (rs9005) were selected and investigated in allelic, genotypic, dominant, and recessive models. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was evaluated in each SNP. The sample was composed of 273 para-athletes (63 (23.4%) practice swimming, 61 (22.3%) powerlifting and 145 (63.7%) athletics). OH recurrent episodes was related by 47 (17.2%) para-athletes and the presence of T allele in the rs1304037 increased chance of OH.  These findings suggest that rs1304037 in IL1A gene is associated with OH recurrent episodes in para-athletes.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), first discovered in the year 1993 in the nematode C. elegans, are small, approximately 22-nucleotide-long, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression. Cellular miRNAs have been implicated in the control of many biological processes, and their dysregulation is associated with different diseases. They can be significantly up/downregulated upon infection or disease, serving as excellent biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Several human DNA viruses, including many herpesviruses, have now been reported to encode viral miRNAs. There are a variety of possible interactions and mechanisms of viral microRNAs (vmiRNAs) which are yet to be remains obscure. Viral miRNAs can function as orthologs of cellular miRNAs and regulate their expression. Additionally, viruses have also developed vmiRNA mechanisms to avoid being targeted by the host miRNAs. Herpes Simplex Viruses (HSV-1 & HSV-2) cause genital and oral herpes, establishing lifelong latent infections in their hosts, and it is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. vmiRNAs play essential roles in Herpesvirus biology. In this chapter, we will discuss the current knowledge about miRNAs and their role in different stages of Herpesvirus infection. It will also elaborate the biomarkers, therapeutic potential of these molecules, and the prospective areas of future research.

The symptoms of recurrent oral herpes infection may vary, from mild discomfort to life threatening. Dentists are more likely to be consulted in this oral infection, hence the ability to diagnose and treat this disease is mandatory. This article described manifestation and therapy of recurrent oral herpes infection. In the first case, a 41-year-old woman came with a complaint of painful sore mouth in her lower gingiva. She experienced canker sores for two to three times a year on the tongue, lips and palate. Laboratory results showed positive IgM anti HSV-2, which matched with the primary herpes infection. However, based on the history and clinical manifestations, she was diagnosed with recurrent intra oral herpes infection. In the second case, a 70-year-old man came with a very painful canker sores in his entire mouth. The patient had to be hospitalised for three days and received analgesic, antibiotic and gel containing triamcinolone. After hospitalisation, canker sores did not heal. Extraorally, we found a crust in the vermillion border of the upper lip and intraorally, we found multiple ulceration of keratinised and non-keratinised mucosa. The use of topical steroid in this patient may aggravated ulceration due to its ability to cause rapid spreading of the virus. The first patient was given chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% and the second patient was prescribed with doxycycline rinse. Both patients received multivitamin containing zinc. Complete history taking, objective and adjunctive examination played a role in establishing the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent oral herpes infections.

Introduction: Herpes simplex is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. Oral herpes caus-es the group of blisters called cold sores or fever blisters over the face or mouth. These are having se-vere burning sensation which causes the dysphagia and difficulty in speaking. It is associated with fe-ver. There will be ulcer formation by the rupture of blisters. Oral herpes can be correlated to Pithaja mukhapaka. This is a case report of 41 years old male who complained of severe burning ulcers on hard palate since 1 month. Materials and Methods: The subject who approached Shalakya Tantra OPD of GAMC, with symptoms of burning ulcers over the palate was thoroughly examined and treat-ment was planned based on Chikitsa sutra of Pithaja mukhapaka. Result: The subject had shown good improvement both subjectively and objectively. Discussion: Pithaja mukhapaka is a Sarvasara Mukha-roga with Daha, Oshayuktha Vrana. There for the treatment is focused on pacifying Pitha.

Patients affected with COVID-19 are at risk of developing serious and life-threatening conditions. The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 were detected in asymptomatic cases to severe clinical symptoms with a major impact on the respiratory system. A few cases of cutaneous as well as an oral lesion of herpes zoster in patients with COVID-19 were reported in the literature. We present a case of the rapid appearance of the oral lesion as a manifestation of herpes zoster associated with COVID-19 infection. Our case highlights the importance of oral examination as well as oral care in patients with COVID-19 infection.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a debilitating infectious disease, often the root cause of all oral herpetic lesions. The oral herpes virus affects the individuals aesthetically, healthwise, and psychologically as well. The aim of the study is to analyze and evaluate the various treatment modalities practiced at the Department of Oral Medicine at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. A total of 64 participants were involved in the study conducted between the period of July 2019 - March 2020. The patients were receiving either of the following treatment: (i) Topical antivirals (ii) Topical anti-inflammatory or analgesics (iii) Systemic antivirals (iv) Systemic antipyretics (v) Supportive therapy if any. The result of the study conducted shows the prevalence of usage of 57% of topical antivirals, 12% of systemic antivirals, 12% of topical anti-inflammatory and analgesics, 13% of systemic antipyretics and 6% of supportive therapy. In conclusion, the topical antiviral drugs prescribed were of high prevalence. However, advising necessary supportive therapy can help in faster healing of the lesions.
