AbstractTheories of structured meanings are designed to generate fine-grained meanings, but they are also liable to overgenerate structures, thus drawing structural distinctions without a semantic difference. I recommend the proliferation of very fine-grained structures, so that we are able to draw any semantic distinctions we think we might need. But, in order to contain overgeneration, I argue we should insert some degree of individuation between logical equivalence and structural identity based on structural isomorphism. The idea amounts to forming an equivalence class of different structures according to one or more formal criteria and designating a privileged element as a representative of all the elements, i.e., a first among equals. The proposed method helps us to a cluster of notions of co-hyperintensionality. As a test case, I consider a recent objection levelled against the act theory of structured propositions. I also respond to an objection against my methodology.

This chapter offers an account of mental representation that spells out the conditions for representational status. I argue that we should draw a distinction between issues concerning content and issues concerning representational role, and that the challenge of understanding representational role is at least as pressing as the more familiar challenge of giving an account of content. I then argue that we should understand representational role in terms of serving as a stand-in, and use the idea of structural isomorphism, with examples from animal cognition and from the literature on analog representation, to capture standing-in.

On the basis of certain semantic intuitions, Barros (2012) argues that ellipsis does not require structural isomorphism between elided structure and its antecedent. We tackle this claim. Semantic intuitions cannot be a pointer to the analysis of silent structure. We provide empirical evidence that raises the question of to what extent semantic intuitions about plausible articulable syntax must inform one’s analysis of silent structure. We conclude that the answer to this question must be crosslinguistically informed. We conjecture that ellipsis introduces ellipsis-specific interpretive mechanisms, so that intuitions about “how the unelided structure would be interpreted” are not empirically relevant.

Abstract Planetary gear sets (PGSs) have been widely used in automatic transmissions (AT) and dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHTs). In this paper, a novel isomorphic detection method for planetary gear transmission structure is proposed based on matrix operation. The isomorphic detection process includes two main parts. In the first part, various components of the transmission structure are classified. In the second part, isomorphic structures of the numerous structures are detected. Through the application of the proposed detection approach, the structures obtained by different synthesis algorithms can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, by the analysis and transformation of the hybrid configuration to conventional transmission configuration, the scope of use of the algorithm can be expanded through the method. The proposed detection approach is capable of automatically detecting the isomorphic structure of the potential structures obtained by synthesis algorithm.

Abstract The study deals with lexical reduplication which has the status of a peripheral, yet legitimate way of how vocabulary is enlarged in the Slovak language. Its result is a reduplicate, a paradigmatically formed unit which – as a whole – is a reflection of its part. Reduplication (in a wider sense) is defined by a semasiological aspect, particularly in the context of structural isomorphism and distinguishing of a reproductive, replicative and reduplicative type (in a narrow sense) with the use of integrative and integrative-modificatory onomasiological categories. The core of the reduplicates is formed by a determinative type of appositional names. Reduplication is a rich source of mimémata and pragma-lexemes. Reduplicates bring a new quality into the lexicon, the quality with specific semantics and pragmatics which oscillates around the pragmatic principle of relevance and amplification. Ethno-significative model ‘X-neX’ is typical for the Slovak language; and the presence of vocalic and echo reduplicates points at the conceptual unification which is of a more universal nature.

X-ray reference powder patterns and crystal structures have been determined for a series of titanium- and cobalt-containing layered alkaline-earth compounds with nominal formula (BaxSr1−x)Ti6Co6O19 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8). Structural isomorphism of the title compounds with the hexagonal ferrite BaFe12O19 and magnetoplumbite (PbFe12O19), was confirmed. The (BaxSr1−x)Ti6Co6O19 series crystallize in the space group of P63/mmc (No. 194) and Z = 2. The lattice parameters range from a = 5.90729(6) Å, c = 23.2378(3) Å, and V = 702.27(2) Å3 for x = 0.2 to a = 5.914 93(9), c = 23.3391(5) Å, and V = 707.15(2) Å3 with x = 0.8. The structure consists of alternating spinel S-block and R-blocks. The tetrahedral sites within the spinel S-blocks are occupied with only Co2+, while Ti4+ is mainly located in the octahedral sites of the spinel S-blocks and in the face-sharing octahedral site of the R-blocks. A bipyramidal mixed Co/Ti site was confirmed in the R-block of the structure. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns of this series of compounds have been submitted to be included in the Powder Diffraction File.

Albanian adjective derivatives derived from verbsThe aim of this article is the analysis of the Albanian adjective derivatives which are derived from verbs. The main assumption made by the author is the existence of structural isomorphism (parallelism in language elements system in which structuring of one level parallels or is made to parallel that of another) between the structure of the derivative and the structure of the sentence. The proposed model of the analysis is directed from content to form. All examined adjective derivatives derived from verbs are being analyzed with their noun context which displays their semantic structure. Nominal phrases containing adjective derivatives are interpreted as the representation of predicate–argument structures. The kind of relation between defined noun and derivational base of the adjective is a criterion of the division of Albanian adjective derivatives derived from verbs. These main types of relations are:relation in which the base of an adjective represents basic predicate;relation in which the base of an adjective represents additional predicate.Classes which are the results of the main division are the subject to detailed description.

A syntactical model of synchronic word formation description – basics and appliedThis article attempts to briefly present the basic postulates, their implications and the resulting opportunities for an approach to word formation, which is defined here as syntactic. It has been already tested in a confrontative description of Polish and Bulgarian word formation (Cf. V. Maldjieva, Słowotwórstwo. Gramatyka konfrontatywna bułgarsko polska, Vol. IX, Warszawa, 2009).The basic postulate is assumed to be the presence of a structural isomorphism between the language units sentence and lexeme, i.e. the same combinatorial rules license both the combinations of lexemes within the sentence and the combinations of morphemes within the lexeme. Another postulate, that is basic for the research, is the relative autonomy of the semantic and syntactic structures of the language units. In regard to word formation it means that, in this case semantic and formal derivatives should be distinguished in analogy to the sentence syntax, that distinguishes the concept structure (sentence) and formal structure (sentential expression).Składniowy model synchronicznego opisu słowotwórstwa – podstawy i zastosowanieArtykuł stanowi próbę zwięzłego przedstawienia podstawowych założeń i ich implikacji oraz wynikających z nich możliwości zastosowania podejścia do słowotwórstwa, które określa się w tym miejscu jako składniowe. Cząstkowe propozycje, interpretacje szczegółowych zjawisk językowych oraz sugestii, których uporządkowanie i rozwinięcie legły u podstaw tego podejścia, zawarte są w różnych pracach prof. Stanisława Karolaka [por. Karolak 2001a, b, c; 2002]. Próbę konsekwentnego zastosowania składniowego modelu do interpretacji zjawisk z zakresu słowotwórstwa w języku polskim i bułgarskim podjęto zaś w opracowaniu konfrontacji słowotwórczej tych języków [Maldjieva 2009], do którego będę się w głównej mierze odwoływać w niniejszej pracy.
