Abstract We present analysis of the effect of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) on spin wave nonreciprocity and bubble expansion asymmetry in Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt synthetic ferrimagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We propose analysis of the DMI by Brillouin Light Scattering technique (BLS) and Kerr microscopy (MOKE) in the presence of interlayer exchange coupling strongly changing spin wave dispersion law and field dependences of domain wall velocity in comparison with those observed earlier in Ir/Co/Pt structures with a single Co layer. We have determined DMI values of each Co layer from unusually inverted dependence of velocity of the domain wall on in-plane magnetic field. Opposite signs of effective fields and DMI fields in the two Co layers invert field dependence of the domain wall velocity. DMI energy determined from BLS is higher than values, determined by bubble expansion.

The luminescent coarse-, micro- and nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate tetrahydrate (Eu2bdc3·4H2O) metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by the ultrasound-assisted wet-chemical method. Electron micrographs show that the europium(III) terephthalate microparticles are 7 μm long leaf-like plates. According to the dynamic light scattering technique, the average size of the Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles is equal to about 8 ± 2 nm. Thereby, the reported Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles are the smallest nanosized rare-earth-based MOF crystals, to the best of our knowledge. The synthesized materials demonstrate red emission due to the 5D0–7FJ transitions of Eu3+ upon 250 nm excitation into 1ππ* state of the terephthalate ion. Size reduction results in broadened emission bands, an increase in the non-radiative rate constants and a decrease in both the quantum efficiency of the 5D0 level and Eu3+ and the luminescence quantum yields. Cu2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions efficiently and selectively quench the luminescence of nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate, which makes it a prospective material for luminescent probes to monitor these ions in waste and drinking water.

Biogenic-silver nanoparticles emerge as new nanosilver platforms that allow us to obtain silver nanoparticles via “green chemistry”. In our study, biogenic-silver nanoparticles were obtained from Iris tuberosa leaf extract. Nanoparticles were characterized by a UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamical light scattering technique. The transmission electron microscope revealed spheric and irregular nanoparticles with 5 to 50 nm in diameter. Antimicrobial properties were evaluated against typical microbial contaminants found in cosmetic products, showing high antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, natural moisturizing cream was formulated with biogenic-silver nanoparticles to evaluate the preservative efficiency through a challenge test, indicating its promising use as preservative in cosmetics.

The present paper investigates the use of multiple light scattering for the monitoring of milk fermentation. The experiments were performed on milk fermented with different starter concentrations (0.05% to 4.5% (w/w) at temperatures from 36 to 44 °C and in the presence of antibiotics at concentrations up to 100 µg/kg. The fermentation was monitored continuously by using a multiple light scattering technique and simultaneously by a pH meter, a rheometer and a texture analyzer. The backscattering signal recorded by multiple light scattering measurements was correlated with the changes in pH, rheological parameters and firmness of the samples along the fermentation. A gelation time of 120 min was obtained when the highest concentration of starter (4.5%, w/w) and incubation temperature of 44 °C were used. These results were confirmed by the pH, rheological and texture monitoring. The analysis of backscattering spectra allowed the detection of the effect of antibiotic on the gel formation even at low concentrations (1.3 µg/kg). Overall, the results highlighted the advantages of using a multiple light scattering technique as quality control tool for online monitoring of milk fermentation.

We had found nonreciprocity of spin waves in Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt synthetic ferrimagnets by Brillouin light scattering technique. It is shown that the main contribution to the nonreciprocity of spin waves is made by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with an energy density D ≈ 1.7 - 2.3 erg/cm2. The energy density of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt synthetic ferrimagnets is higher than its values in heterostructures with one Co layer Pt/Co(1 nm)/Ir ~ 1.4 erg/cm2. The D value of synthetic ferrimagnets decreases with increasing thickness of the Co thin layer.

In this work, we present the structural analysis of 3D/4D printable N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm)-co-stearyl acrylate (SA) and/or lauryl acrylate (LA)-based shape memory gels (SMGs). We characterized these gels by scanning microscopic light scattering technique (SMILS) where a time- and space-averaged correlation function is obtained to overcome the inhomogeneous media. Thus, the characteristic size of the gel internal network (mesh size, ξ) and crosslinking densities are estimated from the Einstein–Stokes formula. The rheological study of the SMGs revealed information about their mechanical strength and transition temperature. From the experimental storage modulus measured by rheological study, crosslinking density and mesh size of the network were also calculated. Both the techniques suggest that SMG with high crystalline content of SA monomer in the gel network contain smaller mesh size (1.13 nm for SMILS and 9.5 nm for rheology study) and high crosslinking density. The comparative study between the light scattering technique and rheological analysis through the quantitative analysis of crosslinking densities will be important to understand the structural properties of the SMGs.
